I've worked out how to get ALSA libasound code working for an application. However I can't workout how to get multiple sounds working at once. I can't seem to find any google examples of mutiple sounds. EG tune plays while pressing buttons makes clicks. I'm using an embedded board so need to use ALSA not an addon e.g. sdlmixer, jack, etc.
View 3 RepliesI'm having trouble getting ALSA to play multiple sound streams (multiple sounds at once). My code is running on an embedded ARM board using a AC97 sound. It will only play one without any mixing, I have to use pure ALSA as higher sound mixers are a nightmare to cross compile for ARM. I've tested my system with aplay for example
aplay -D plughw:0,1 bang.wav
works fine. So I tried dmix with
aplay -D plug:dmix Win.wav
That gave the following error

I checked asound with

Does this mean dmix will not work? Is there someway with the above setup I can play multiple sounds? I have to use the vendor ALSA build (so can't update ALSA), I can change the .confs however. Also because I'm cross compiling things like pulseaudio SDL are very difficult to get working, so I basically need to use the above ALSA. Is there anyway I can find if dmix exists on the system?
Should add aplay -L does show dmix ?

I'm currently using Ubuntu 9.10 and since I've installed it, I don't have any sounds at all. Sounds work fine on windows. My version of alsa is 1.0.21. I made sure that I've got nothing muted in alsa mixer and it seems that ubuntu detects my sound card.

I have been unable to get Pulseaudio and ALSA to play nice together, so I have completely removed the former as Skype defaults to using it and nothing else. I also want the ability to play HDMI 5.1 HDMI passthrough through XBMC etc, which again, would not work with pulse.
However, removing pulse means that I no longer get system sounds (the intro music etc), or any sounds coming through the browser - Chromium - (i.e. when using Flash (.....)). I have searched around the forums a fair bit, but either there is not a solution (but there must be!), or my Google-fu is well below par (more likely!).
So I don't use gnome, KDE, or XFCE, but I'm running Xubuntu. I'm constantly playing music via nvlc. While that music's still playing, I'd like to be able to hear a sound I run from the command line via

I've tried on and off over the years messing with pulse, esd, etc. output options for vlc, but never figured out exactly how to do this. In Windows, having a batchfile play a .wav at the same time as an mp3 player is playing music "just works" I know there must be a "just works" solution for Linux.
when I play an MP4 movie everything is great except all I hear is the background sounds in the movie..and non of the foreground (ie the actors speaking)...I have uninstalled pulse audio in the past and use alsamixer for any sound configs.

I'm trying to record a video with sound through FFmpeg, and while it records the system sounds just fine, it doesn't record the microphone (in fact, it crashes on doing so!). The strange thing is that if I use arecord, it works just perfectly, but through ffmpeg it crashes.This is the command that I use to launch FFmpeg:

I am using a perl script which uses curl in the background to download files from rapidshare premium,one file at a time. I wanted to know is it possible to use curl and spawn multiple connection at a time,to download the same file in multiple parts?? I don't seem to find an option in curl which does that.

CARD 0: IDT HDA Code for the Handset
CARD 1: NXP USB Codec for the Speakerphone
I can play music on each of them using command line commands. But when I use ALSA APIs, I can only play music on CARD 1 (Speaker phone) and not on CARD 0 at all.
The code I have for CARD 1 is: snd_pcm_open(&phandle, "plughw:1,0", SND_PCM_STREAM_PLAYBACK, 0);
I have all the other API calls as well.. and I am using PCM STREAM RATE = 16000, Channels = 1 for initializing. BUt when I change the devide to: "plughw:0,0" -- I get no audio on the handset.
the sound stops while playing music or movies and can't be restartet. I already upgraded alsa to 1.0.24.2. I managed to fix the problem somehow after hours of deinstalling and reinstalling alsa and trying loads of things, but I did not really find the cause of the problem.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am new to this forum and have recently switched to Ubuntu. The OS installed without a hitch and was able to get video card, wireless internet installed with relative ease. However, I have encountered a problem installing my E-mu 0404 PCI sound card via the ALSA packages in Synaptic.
Code: 04:03.0 Multimedia audio controller [0401]: Creative Labs SB0400 Audigy2 Value [1102:0008] As you can see once the packages were installed the OS could see the hardware ok, but when I tried playing a standard MP3 file (16 bit, 44.1khz, 192kbps) in Totem it started playing the file back around 15-20% faster than normal? To me it sounds as if the software is playing the audio back at higher sample rate than 44.1khz hence the faster speed, though I'm not 100% on that.
The next thing I tried was playing the same file back in VLC and it was exactly the same (15-20% too fast), but this time it was horrible and glitchy as well, almost as if the audio buffer size was set to small. The same thing happened when I tried playing back some flac and wav files (all 16 bit, 44.1khz) also. I have searched google (and read the comprehensive sound card guide on this forum) and read several forums, guides, etc. for anybody posting the same issue with this particular card but could find nothing. From all reports I've read this card should work fine under ALSA. For the record I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 64bit kernel running on a Dell Dimension 9200 (Intel Core2Duo E6400 2.13ghz) with 2GB RAM.
I'm trying to develop a system that records different desktops at the same time. I have developed a audio-videochat system and I want to be able to record what happens in every room, so my starting idea was:
1) Open a graphic terminal for each room. I have succeeded using vncserver :NumberDisplay.
2) In each terminal, run firefox at each URL. I succeeded too because firefox lets me specify in wich NumberDisplay I want it to be open
3) In each terminal, run recordmydesktop to record. It allows too to specify the NumberDisplay.
My problem now is that it seems that the sound card is "shared", so the sounds recorded in the display 1 includes the sound generated in all others firefox windows. I havnt found an analogy for the sound as the display is for the graphics.
I have thought some ideas but I havnt been able to materialize anyone.
Im tried to create virtual sound cards and specify one for each vncserver, I tried to redirect the sound of each firefox window to one "channel" (read firefox delegates the sound so that might not be an option), I read many things about pulseaudio, jack and several stuff that I just havnt been able to work.
I'm looking for a program that will digitally display the time in three different cities - all showing at once. I don't care if it is a panel applet or stand-alone. I'm using Suse 11.3 and Gnome.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have stated that I use Pulse because ALSA fails to utilize more then one sound app. With ALSA if I watch a ..... vid in firerfox and soon open my music player the music player wont work unless I close off firefox. so I close off firefox but sometimes flash hangs the sound device hostage and I have to log out or kill something to make sure ALSA is freed up. So this is why I use pulse, it makes using more then one sound app at a time much easier, no hang ups at all. But there are a few apps that dont get along with pulse so there must be a way to configure alsa to use more then one sound app at a time. Do I have some compiling to do? Is it commandline? I am just curious what you anti pulse folks do to use more then one sound app at a time without the aid of pulse. it only mumbles about the differences between the multiple sound servers.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have an Intel HDA audio card, and would like to record both my soundcard output and my microphone input at the same time. Getting to record my soundcard output (aka "Stereo Mix" or "What-U-Hear") is impossible for my soundcard without using the PulseAudio monitor, so I've set that up. Now I can record either the PulseAudio monitor for my soundcard, or the microphone input, but I don't know how to record both at the same time.
Currently, my .asoundrc looks like this:

So now I can choose either "pulse" as an input channel in, for example, Audacity or RecordMyDesktop applications (and then set in the PA volume control the actual channel which I want recorded), or choose "pulse_monitor" or "pulse_mic", in order to record either the PA monitor or the microphone, respectively.
I've read through the ALSA plugins reference, as well as the Asym and Dmix pages on ALSA wiki, but I'm still not sure how to put this together. I figured there should be a way either to route the microphone input into the ALSA output, and thus make the PA monitor "hear" what I speak into the microphone, or to make a completely new channel with both ALSA output and microphone input as "slaves", and then use that for recording.
When I had UBUNTU 10.04 sound WORKED!I have post several threads about this issue, I hope this would be the last one, My OS version is Ubuntu 11.04, my hardware is: Nvidia GTS 450 video Card EGS; and an integrated sound card reference: Via Azalia HDAC VT1708/A; After installing ubuntu I had no audio through my integrated sound card, I cant use my NVidia HDA card because I need for it an HDMI AUDIO, and I dont have any HDMI sound devices like dvd or TV. So I need to use my integrated default Via soundcard. I Updated the OS, nothing changed. After typing aplay -l it showed this:

I've been using opensuse for about a week.(although I'm not completely a linux noob) I've been slowly moving more of the stuff I do on windows over to suse. I thought my sound was working fine until I decided to get mp3s running on amarok. I followed a bunch of guides which didn't work. While I was messing around with stuff I noticed a startup noise. I just assumed it didn't have a startup noise. At some point I broke all of my sound except running wine, so I reinstalled.
Now that I've noticed, none of my notification sounds work. Stuff like skype, firefox, and wine still give me sounds.
(If anyone could point me in the direction of a good place to get mp3s working on amarok would be nice as well.)

I'm trying to get Totem to play VCD's. There are many complaints about this not working, but since they're all really old and dealing with different problems, it's hard to tell if this is an issue with me, or with the totem package. When I put a VCD in the computer, I expect it to pop up, (as it does) and prompt me to open the CD with Totem (which it does). When Totem tries to play it, though, it throws this error:
Code: An error occurred. Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file.
Interestingly this is the same error I get when I try to play DVDs on a separate computer with the same ubuntu software. The CD plays, however. If I click ok, and go to:
Movie > Play Disk '<disk name>'
The problem is:
1) I want it to be automatic, without errors,
2) These VCD's have several tracks and after the first 30 second track, it stops. It won't play any other tracks.
I tried a few other pieces of software just to see if other things worked (as I'm looking for user friendly-ness, I doubt the others will be a final option):
VLC: (No apparent activity. Disk spins)
gxine: Autoplay input plugin 'VCD' failed: Check engine output for further details.
Mplayer: Error!: Failed to open vcd://2.
K3b seems to have no problem, but it's not really a media player...

Okay I think the problem was with needing a GUI.
Using this instead works, but i only hear the sound when I log in. I think something needs to be doen to start the audio perhaps?

I have a HP laptop model HP G72 Notebook PC, Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 350 @2.27GHz & the Sound devices are Intel(R) Display Audio & Realtek High Definition Audio.
This machine came loaded with Windows7 & I have successfully dual booted it with Ubuntu Lucid 10.04.3.
The problem I am having is that I cannot get the sound to work at all in Ubuntu. No opening sounds or anything else that I have tried. No Web sounds, no CD sounds... All sounds work fine on the Windows side, but nothing I have tried so far seem to work with Ubuntu & I have tried many options from many threads.
When I started to play songs, I have the normal sound. However, after some time, the songs are still being played but there is no sound anymore. It is not for music player so I don't think it is a player problem. In addition, after I delete and reinstall the audio card, the sound comes back. I have another problem about sound card disturbing me. When I watch ..... using firefox, there is no audio from the video. However, I do have the audio when the chrome is used. What could cause that? I kind of believe those two problems are related. The problem happens after I upgrade my 10.3 to 11.2 and now I am using 11.3. Does that come from the new configuration conflicts with the old one?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've added this packman repo: Index of /suse/openSUSE_11.4/ and installed all the necessary libraries and tools required as mentioned here using zypper: Restricted formats/11.4 - openSUSE Community Wiki When I try to play any movie in VLC I'm able to hear the audio for some time usually 3-4 mins and then audio totally stops though the video continues to play. A random seek or a seek forward/back also cause similar issue almost immediately. I switched the output module in VLC preference to different settings: default, SDL, Unix OSS, Alsa but the same issue persists. The audio recovers if I just enter the Audio settings menu in VLC preferences and click Save (even without changing anything) but after the same 3-4 mins or by seeking, the audio stops.
I disabled Pulseaudio for my sound card(s) in Yast->Sound, and I even kill the pulseaudio process but it somehow starts itself up again when I change anything in VLC audio preferences or even simply click Save without any changes. I've made sure all the multimedia related packages are installed from the packman repo whenever possible (I still observe there are few packages which do not exist on the packman but the openSUSE 11.4 repo alone eg. phonon-backend-gstreamer, phonon-backend-xine) Here is the rpm query output for the multimedia related libraries:

I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 and as a newbie to linux based operating systems, has tried but without success of playing WoW with wine. I tried with making a link to ''wow.exe'' and right-click ''open with wine windows program loader'' but ended up with a blue screen and a black square as my pointer, i can heard the login music but no picture. Can anyone give me some instructions on this issue, preferably with some pictures.

View 4 Replies View Relatedlenny gives me either system sounds, or other sounds like flash plugin sounds like videos, cd playback etc., but not both. to hear videos i have to disable system sounds. as soon as i tick enable software sound mixing (esd) in system -> preferences -> sound -> sounds, videos goes. a message saying it could not open the resource as something else is using it comes up when trying to play a cd. sounds like a threading problem in some program. what should i do to get sounds to be equitably shared by all?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using Debian linux. I have 100 timers running. If a timer expired which will generate a signal and it was mapped to a same function handler. All the timers are mapped to one function handler. The problem is if the timer expires one at a time, the function handler called at a time. But if the 2 timers expires at a time, the function handler is called one time only instead 2 times. Is it possible to invoke the function handler as many times based on timer expirary happens simultaneoulsy?
