Ubuntu Installation :: WUBI + Kubuntu-desktop Wrecks Boot?

Mar 5, 2010

On my MS Vista 64bit machine, I installed Ubuntu through WUBI (some time in 2010) and was happily booting one or the other as needed. Then I added kubuntu-desktop (using Synaptic). Now, when I reboot, the Windows Boot Manager still offers Vista and Ubuntu as boot options. But Ubuntu, rather than boot, goes to a grub shell. I found a GrubHowto that includes "Manual boot into a Linux OS" - but it seems to suggest that clean Karmic installs use Grub2 and the Howto instructions apply only to Grub. I don't know if the WUBI install was Karmic or something older. I don't know anything about using grub manually. And I don't know how to get my (k)ubuntu back!

Ubuntu :: Desktop Interface Vs Xbmc

Mar 19, 2011

I got into ubuntu-netbook-10.04.2 through the graphical interface ensures that xbmc as the first boot as described below. Autostart XBMC (optional)I did perform this step, since it makes your system only run XBMC. I wanted to be able to select the application By following these instructions, your system will boot directly into XBMC rather than your desktop from now on. It is advised that you delay this step until XBMC is setup as you'd like it.

1. From the desktop click System -> Administration -> Login Screen

2. From the "Security" tab choose "Enable Automatic Login" and select your username.

3. Click "OK" to exit.

4. Logout of your system.

5. From the Login screen choose "Select Session"

6. Choose "XBMC" and click "Change Session"

does anyone know how I can undo ihave webmin so I could edit some script.

Ubuntu :: Will Gnome 2 Style Desktop Interface Be Dead?

May 4, 2011

Since Unity and Gnome 3, the desktop interfaces are really changed. I really like the Gnome 2 (classic) interface. I can see every tray icon, every window that opened or minimized at panels, I have my menus, I don't need some mouse tricks to see something. Unity and Gnome 3 are fancy but I don't look for fancy.

Gnome 3 is the next generation. I don't like it. I don't like Unity either. And the problem is Gnome 2 will not be evolved much with its own standard interface because Gnome 3 is arrived. Gnome 2 is getting closer to its end of life. Bugs will not be handled with more attention, compatibilities will be less.So than, I don't like this situation of Gnome 2 either.

General :: Which Distro Has A SIMPLE Desktop Interface

May 16, 2010

I am looking for a distro with an extremely simple desktop interface. I am looking for something as simple as the iPad where you can only run 1 application and it gets maximized. You click an icon and... you get that. Also the hardware is well described as "Aging," it is not dual-core, and may be as low as 64mb of RAM.

This is because the computer will basically be used as a simple game machine, and by game I mean Minesweeper and Solitaire. For Multiplayer games maybe virtual board games on a single screen, no LAN type stuff. Also I do not want the primary users of this computer to be able to access anything besides exactly what I determine they are supposed to. Basically what we want is something that is Child-Safe and Child-Simple. There will be no internet browsing or document creation or anything complicated.

Now I am not saying however that there won't be a possible user login that does have access to a full complement of software programs, just that I need to be able to setup at least one login that meets the criteria I specified. I have used Ubuntu in a few iterations, I can use a terminal with some internet help, and consider myself "Technical." Primarily I will be managing the software.

CentOS 5 :: How To Get Back Regular GUI Interface For Desktop

Jun 28, 2011

I am some LinuxUNIX history but still consider my self a newbie.I know Microsoft OS well and am more comfortable with that but willing to learn Linux as well.I have a CentOS 5.5 Server I am using to Host over 18 other sites with a PERL / Web based application. The application and hosting are still working but since the CentOS updates I ran this morning my Session (I think that is the correct word) will only load a black desktop with the top menu bar only having the terminal icon and the bottom having a desktop icon; whereas prior to this update the default CentOS blue backdrop with white flower pattern and Applications, Places, System with the terminal icon and other icons displayed and the clock was off to the right.I think this is the Gnome GUI?

Also On Friday 6-24-11 I added a device line to the /etc/fstab so that my CD/DVD device would load up at boat time. I would not think this to be causing the problem. Please advise me on how to get back my regular GUI interface for this Desktop.

Ubuntu Installation :: How To Test The Wubi 10.04

Mar 26, 2010

If you still have windows on some of your machines and a bit of free drive space, your help testing Wubi for the 10.04 Lucid release would be most welcome. Please use the latest Wubi version available on [URL] There is no need to burn or use a CD, Wubi will automatically download and use the latest daily ISO.If you have any issue, follow this procedure:

Uninstall and try with a clean installation using the latest revision from the above link
If that does not help, when you reboot into Ubuntu the first time, you can press ESC for more installation boot options, sometimes those fix the issue. Check [URL] if there is already an open bug, in case feel free to add a comment in there If none of the above helps, feel free to ask on this thread (I am subscribed). If you think you stumbled upon a new bug, an even better place for reporting your issue is [URL] More points if you attach the wubi.log file which is located in your user temp directory.

Ubuntu :: Restore The Default Desktop Folder?

Mar 28, 2011

I have a Windows Partition for my Windows system and another partition for my Ubuntu. All my data is located in another partition called User). What I did, in the home folder, I deleted the default user folders (Documents, Desktop, Videos,...) and created a link to to the folders in the User partition. So for Desktop, I created a link to User/Desktop folder, for Documents, I created a link in my home folder to the 'User/My Documents'. What happens now is that all the symlinks I have created appear in my desktop instead of the Desktop items I have in User/Desktop. Any idea how to restore the default desktop folder? I have removed the link to the User/Desktop in my home folder and created a new folder named Desktop and nothing happens.

OpenSUSE :: Return KDE Desktop To Default

Sep 3, 2010

so I installed openSUSE 11.3 KDE and fooled around with it and the Plasma Netbook Workspaces and am now back with the regular KDE. Unfortunately something I have done has now caused me to not be able to do simple tings like change the wallpaper, or add Widgets to the desktop. Everything seems to "technically" work, so I suspect that it was a configuration somewhere that I messed up.

Is there a directory or directories I can delete and then log out and back in which will create the environment with default settings? I've done this with Gnome and Xfce when I've really messed it up and it has fixed things a number of times, but I am not sure where KDE stores their config files. I believe is it openSUSE 11.3 with the KDE version that came with it and it was installed from a LiveCD.
