How is possible to enable the Unity interface on a desktop computer with virtual-box? i tried it but it runs like the desktop interface, i didnt notice any difference between the desktop mode.

When I create virtual ethernet interface and do a ping -I <v_int> <host> the outgoing address is the one of the physical interface and NOT the virtual interface.Is there no chance that trafic will go out with virtual interface address??Incoming trafic is done well i.e. responds to the virtual interface have the virtual address.
My problem is that I have 2 modems and want to check both default gw behind the modems.
If I do a "normal" ping both are reachable over default route even the modem which is not the default route will not work because ping goes over the working modem.So I have 2 routing tables and want to route the virtual interface to one modem the other to the other modem
I found multiple sites explaining how to add IPs to a network interface as virtual interface like eth0:0. However I can add IPs to an interface as well using the ip command: ip a a 192.168.2.2/24 dev eth0 What I want to know is how I can make this persistent on rhel/centos.

My laptop (Acer Aspire 6930G) runs 10.10 like a dream. On my netbook (Asus 1001 pX) 10.10 sucks. And it uses the Unity interface which I suspect as being the problem. Apart from that I don't like it (the unity interface) - so I would love to know how to get rid of it.

I get to my location and power-up, I now can't see the Unity interface, but it's kind of there.I've tried to reboot the laptop, power off and back up, etc. I'm not really sure what would have cause this or where to even look at this point.You can see at the very left that the arrow is there and at the top that the bar is kind of there, but not really. ><

The disk will not start up, if I restart and try to boot from load i just sits there and says boot from cd. The disk drive plays music cd's fine, so i dont really know what the issue is.
I dont know that much aboutut ubuntu. a tech friend put it on hard drive he gave me after mine crashed. also i should ad that i took the disk to someone else's house that haswidnows installed and the disk worked just fine, so its not a disk problem
i just installed the ubuntu-netbook package to test out unity on my system.. on seems to work fine but how do i copy my files and folders to a usb drive ? wen i open files and folders using unity..it jus opens in a black window.. i cannot right click on any item..i can just open it.. how how do i do my normal file operations using it ?

- If I go to Compiz, it shows that Unity is enabled.
- When I login, it shows that the Unity interface is selected.

I absolutely loved the previous interface, and was quite shocked and saddened to see it disappear. But I'd like to keep all the other new software that comes with 10.10. So my question is, can I install the old 10.04 beautiful interface to run on the 10.10 edition? Re-installation is a MS solution, that turned me on to linux in the first place!

View 1 Replies View RelatedDecided to give Unity desktop a try this afternoon on my Maverick desktop - bad mistake. Found it very slow so I removed it. After that I restarted and all I get after logging in is a white screen.
I don't get an option at login to use KDE or anything else for that matter, so I'm hoping someone can give me some idea how I can rectify this.
Really don't want to wipe the install and start over because I don't have a separate home partition (think I've learned my lesson on that front) and there's a lot of stuff I need to keep on this machine.
I just upgraded and hated the left side vertical menu, it's just not my thing.I decided (regrettably) to deselect the Unity plug-in from with the Compiz Settings UI thinking it might get rid of it. I also tried entering configcompiz-settings-manager but again, a dead end.
View 7 Replies View Relatedis it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

I have an ubuntu server that I am using as a gateway router. I have 2 nics in the machine and am using iptables to run the NAT.I now have a need to provide several machines on the inside of the network with their own public IP. So I created a virtual interface on the the WAN card and attempted a 1:1 nat across it, but it's not working. The virtual interface isn't even responding to pings. If I ping the ip of the virtual interface from the outside, it doesn't work. If I run a tcpdump on the interface, I can see ICMP request packets but no replies. Watching the same dump while pinging the non-virtual interface IP results in both request and reply packets. What's stranger the inbound ICMP request packets on the virtual interface seem to be hit or miss. Sometimes when I ping it, I can see the request packets hitting the interface, sometimes I get nothing.

I've been trying to find a way to watch videos from my main desktop computer on another computer I've plugged into an HDTV. I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.
What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.

So, in the Gnome desktop, I would go to gconf-editor and set some keys and I'd get my computer folder and home folder shortcut on my desktop.

However if i do eth0:1 hw ether 00:11:22:33:44:55 It changes eth0 as well. Where should i look into for creating a separate virtual interface that's simply bridged with one of the existing interfaces that has a separate ip and hw address that the os handles.
