Toshiba notebook is set up to triple boot win7, mepis 8.5 and os 11.3.Recent update of os11.3 left system with boot failure, "file not found".I booted mepis and used utility to reinstall grub, but no joy.
Appeared to install ok but on reboot, sda5 identified as 'mepis' not os11.3 and would not boot. Win7 & mepis boot ok.

Next, booted live Parted Magic and repaired as per another thread here, but again, no joy.NONE of the systems will boot.Rebooted mepis live cd and reinstalled grub again. Sda5 still identified as mepis and will not boot. Win7 & mepis boot ok.

OpenSUSE Install :: Persistent 11.2 Live System On USB Not Booting

Dec 2, 2009

Yesterday I did follow exactly the description how to build a live system on a USB Stick with the additional second partition for the data of Live_USB_stick. So far I had success, as my Netbook did start booting and loaded the OpenSUSE 11.2. Then I rebooted the Netbook and it never again comes up with the 11.2. It looks as if it would stop somewhere at starting the graphical system, but I'm not sure.

Today, second try, I created the USB stick with the 11.2 Live System only (no second partition). My Netbook starts booting and shows the 11.2 system successfully, also further boots are the same successful. Then having created the Live system with the second partition again, results in a un-bootable Netbook again (not even the first time it comes up).

What I wonder when I did check the USB partitions: the one (sdg1) with the Live-CD can be mounted and the content is readable. The second one (sdg2) cannot be mounted; shouldn't it be mountable and shouldn't it be formated with a file system? Did anyone have some experience on this? Or, at least, the people having a running persistent live system, what does the partition them show up?

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Create Dual-Booting System

Sep 20, 2010

I currently have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installed on my PC. The details of how it got installed I cannot explain... I installed it on a HD that was not partitioned and I accepted all the defaults that Ubuntu suggested. So as far as I know right now Ubuntu "owns" the whole HD.

I now would like to create a dual-boot system by installing openSUSE 11.3 alongside Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. By reading things here and there, my guess is that I need to create a partition for openSUSE by shrinking the one for Ubuntu. But I am really not sure.

So I downloaded the CD version (GNOME) only of openSUSE, launched the installer and the process came to the following suggestions which is basically all Greek to me:

* Delete partition /dev/sda1
* Create root volume /dev/sda1 with ext4
* Create volume /dev/sda3 for /home with ext4
* Use /dev/sda5 as swap

As I said before, what I would like to do is install openSUSE side-by- side with Ubuntu and create a dual-boot system. I do not want to delete Ubuntu! I got scared by that "Delete partition /dev/sda1" thing mentioned above and so I aborted the installation.

What is the installer suggesting? Has it realized that I already have Ubuntu installed and that I want to create a dual-boot system?

OpenSUSE Install :: When Booting - System Announced Corrupted IPtables And Didn't Load KDE

Dec 8, 2009

I recently installed Suse 11.1 from the Live CD on an older PC. Suddenly, when booting up yesterday, the system announced corrupted IPtables and didn't load KDE. After login, I tried commands like KDE, run KDE but the bash didn't understand the commands.

So I booted from the live CD, but I can't find an option in the install menu to repair the existing installation. The help in the boot-up screen claims there should be an install option, but it doesn't show it at that point, only after KDE has started from the Live CD.

Since I've already made some changes (newer firefox, downloaded thunderbird etc.), I would like to keep and repair the current installation, instead of a new installation.

I don't however understand enough about the automatic partitions I'm being offered in the installation menu to know what to choose to keep the existing files. I did choose the offered automatic partitions the first time, and have now several partitions, home swap and so on.

Second question: While 11.1 was still running nicely, I could not find the option to upgrade to 11.2 in the Yast menu (I don't know any batch commands, so I only use Yast for installation). Looking at the download sites on opensuse on the internet, I saw an update option, but when I tried to add that URL to the Yast repository, it somehow didn't work. I also didn't see a nicely packed .rpm or similar update package.

Third problem: I downloaded a newer version of Firefox and Thunderbird and after some tries got Yast software repositories to install them. But the Avira antivir tar.gz package I downloaded, did not appear on the Yast repository manager. Doubleclicking to Ark didn't work, and when I went to console and tried to run the install file in the zipped package, it wanted parameters, and I didn't know what to answer.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: System Instantly Crashing At Times / Solve This?

Jun 4, 2011

For the last 4-5 weeks my cpu will suddenly turn off, not shutdown, just instantly go off.

It has happened when I've been browsing and even when I have not been at the computer. I know it could be a hardware malfunction, but I started seeing some consistency in it's crashes the last two weeks.

During Skype, more and more, it would crash. And then I whenever I would upload more than 3 MP3 files to Amazon Cloud Music Player It would crash in the same way.

I downgraded off Tumblweed this morning and it seems to be working better. It has crashed once, but it completed uploading 12 tracks to Amazon, which it had not been able to before.

I'm running KDE 4.6.3 currently and Firefox 4.0.1 with Skype 2.2.0.25-suse111. I was using kernel ..39, now I'm on ..37.

I'm content to stick with the 11.4 repos and ..37 kernel. But I would love to hear if anyone else has had these issues, or a suggestion to solve this?

Slackware :: No FSCK When Booting 13.0 As Live DVD?

Mar 7, 2010

Well, I noticed this by accident while trying to use dash for the rc.d scripts. I messed up and forgot to link it to /bin, and as such, the system failed to boot properly and would not respond. I rebooted (forcefully), but this messed up the filesystem. I booted the sw64 install DVD and tried to mount it, and it would not mount.

I tried to run fsck on it, but it said that fsck.jfs in NOT available. Eventually I booted my old slamd64 12.1 DVD and it had fsck.jfs. Any reason why this rather useful program was removed ? Or is it a bug, or is my DVD messed up? I guess I should just keep around another live CD, I do keep knoppix, but it boots so slow and I don't understand it at all, it's so hard to do anything with it.

My question, will I be able to administer the server through serial console incase if my root partition is corrupted and system has gone to maintenance shell(or root shell).

Also is there way to go directly to maintenance shell from grub(not talking about single user mode). I want to go maintenance shell where / partition is not mounted.

OpenSUSE Install :: Fsck - Not Needed With Ext4 Filesystems?

Apr 17, 2010

My openSUSE 11.2 system has periodic running of fsck disabled for ext4 filesystems (Maximum mount count = -1, Check interval = 0). What is the reason for this? Is it because fsck is not necessary on a periodic basis with ext4, and only necessary when errors are detected? Or is it because fsck has problems working on ext4 filesystems?

The ext3 filesystems do have it set (Maximum mount count = 500, Check interval = 5184000 (2 months)). I would like to know why fsck is not set to be activated for ext4.

Debian :: Automatically Continue Booting After Fsck Fails?

I've just migrated to Debian from Ubuntu on my server. So my first post here. I've had some problems and questions when installing and configuring Debian, now everything seems very smooth, but still I can't find answer to one question. My machine is headless and I allways use SSH to it. I have several partitions on machine so if one of them fails on booting time with fsck, I need to press CTRL+D combination to continue. In that case I need to go to the machine with monitor and keyboard and press that combination. Is there any way to automatically continue for example after 30 seconds ? Then I could log in to the system and check log files what is wrong. How can I do that ?

OpenSUSE Install :: No Disk Seen When Booting The Disk In Another System?

Jan 2, 2010

My dual proc, dual core Opteron MSI Master2FAR motherboard failed, and I try to boot a disk, used on this board as boot disk, on an Intel based Gigabyte GA-965-DS3. Both systems are x86_64 architecture.

The OS is on both systems is openSUSE 11.1.

On booting the disk on the Gigabyte, the disk is seen correctly by the BIOS, but not by the OS, and there is no /dev/sdX; no /dev/disk/... either. I am taken to a login shell from the ramdisk.

When I just mount this disk on the Gigabyte (booted with the Gigabyte's original boot disk) everything seems fine. No suprise to me, since the disk was fine, and was unmounted gracefully and physically taken off the MSI before the board failed.

I think that the cause lies in the fact that the harddisk controller on the Gigabyte is different from the MSI, and the driver for that controller is not available at boot time.

I have two questions:

- is my assumption correct, or is something else going on?

- if I am right, is there a way to get this disk booting on the Gigabyte (or on another system, for that matter)?

You might want to ask why I want to boot this disk on the Gigabyte in the first place, since I can mount it and see all data on it. I have a reason for that, but telling that story would make this topic too long, and it's too off-topic. Most certainly I will get to that in another topic.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Memory Swapping Causes System Failure?

Jan 11, 2010

We have a four socket amd machine, running barcelona processors, with 64gb ram.The system runs for extended periods just fine when the system is running up to or below the 64gb memory limit. A typical load on the machine has short periods where the machine uses heavy amounts of swap space (30+ Gb). We have a swap partition of around 96Gb. When we push the machine into heavy swapping, the machine will fail within 24hrs. Has anyone experienced this problem and is there a solution other than buying more physical memory? Or am I wrong and maybe the physical memory is the issue? I thought maybe it was the memory itself, and after stripping the memory down, I get the same problem...failure upon heavy swapping

Fedora Installation :: Can't Install F14 | System-config-lvm Failure?

Jan 5, 2011

Been running Fedora for a while now, iterating up through versions to 12. Decided to to a clean install upgrade to 14. Apparently, bug mistake. Everything seems to be progressing fine, but after 'transferring install image to harddrive', the 'Starting Install Process' fails withsystem-config-lvm-1.1.15-1.fc14.narach.rpm cannot be opened.I have no idea what to do with this. I've reburned the install disk a couple of times (and checked the HASH) -- no apparent problems with the install media.Tech details: x86_64 install on a multi-pro box with a 3ware raid 5 controller (5 disk). I've never run LVMs. Two simple hard partitions (/ and /home). Fedora 12 installed with no problems (as did every other version of Fedora <=12).---------- Post added at 12:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:54 AM ----------Some additional information:1 tried Fedora 13 -- wouldn't even recognize my disks. Installer hung at trying to find basic storage. Not a good sign2 tried my old Fedora 12 install DVD -- again, worked like a charm. Expect that F12 repos are now closed.

So, it seems as if some 'change' between F12 and F13/14 has made some part of the install process choke on my 'hardware' (I'm guessing something related to 3ware RAID card). ---------- Post added at 01:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:29 PM ----------I just tried CentOS 5.5 (x86_64). Also installed fine. For some reason, Fedora >= 13 absolutely won't let me get past the problem noted in the OP. I suppose I could go with CentOS (for long EOL support), but I need some of the newer compiler/dev libs in Fedora 14 for some projects I'm working on.

OpenSUSE Install :: Boot Failes With "fsck.ext3: Error Too Many Open Files"?

ERROR: Couldn't open /dev/null (Too many open files)
ext2fs_check_if_mount: Too many open files while determining whether ... is mounted.
fsck.ext3: Too many open files while trying to open ...

I found a new version of the e2fsprogs at the OBS package claiming to fix this problem. But installing this new version did not solve my problem.

Here some information about the affected system:
Operating System:openSUSE 11.2 (i586)
Installed e2fsprogs:e2fsprogs-1.41.11-4.1.i586
