Whenever I go to a file and choose "Compress > as zip archive" I get the following error message: "Failed to locate program 'zip' in PATH"
What is wrong? I really need to be able to zip up my files because of the work I do (I make 3D models for "SweetHome 3D" and the files must be in .zip format).
This just disappoints me because SuSE 10.0 came with it and I was able to use it with no trouble at all.
I'm using OpenSuSE 11.2 now with KDE 4.3.5 and the Ark tool that was installed is: 2.13
I'd like to ask about archive mounter feature, can I mount zip file with read write mode? can gvfsd-archive do that?, or I must use fuse-zip to mount it? If I must use fuse-zip, how I wrap it so I can use it via nautilus or via gvfs-fuse-daemon
cpuid utility is not compiled with U9.04 and the utility is not available as a package with synaptic - other distributions have it available as rpm . url

I wish to exclude some files from a zip archive. On other OSes to exclude an entire directory I would use the "-x" option like so:
Code: zip -r archive-name * -x dir1/* Simple. And just add "-x"'s as needed (or use an exclusion file).
Not how it works here, it would seem. AFAICT all "-x" options are ignored. (The entries in an exclusion file also.) For instance, "-x diy/mplayer/*" should ignore everything in the <diy/mplayer> directory. It does not. I have tried fully qualified paths as well; no joy.
I am new to the world of linux and when attempting to verify a tar archive I am displayed the following error. When running the command tar cvfW archivename.tar filename directoryname does not yield any errors.
All operation result in a seperate window displaying the progress of the compression but with an error.
Error 127, cannot execute requested operation.
Then when the progress bar reaches full it resets and then resets again continuing the same loop with it becoming slower with every repetition. There is no information posted in the report log of the window. Except that the task has started.
I'm trying to simply archive a file and password protect it. This shouldent be such a difficult task.
P7zip also gives me its own set of errors when archiving.
Right now I use "rsync -a" to sync my zimbra directory with another directory as a backup. I'd like to archive that backup (zip....rar....etc etc) in such a way that it preserves the same information as rsync -a would (symlinks, permissions.... Etc etc). Does anyone know of such an archive method? My goal is to have it so that if I uncompress the file, the result should match exactly what my zimbra was at the time of backup.
I want to edit files while in runlevel three. I am trying to learn how to navigate my entire system via CL. Whenever I use gedit in runlevel three, is says, "cannot open display"
Is there a utility to edit files without X11 fired up?
I'm new to Ubuntu, and everytime i've tried to download a program like iTunes, the "Archive Manager" comes up and says "An Error Has Occured While Loading the Archive". how to fix this or download programs ?
I have two non-system drives with archive files. Each drive is formatted with one primary partition only, occupying all the drive space. In each drive there will be a number of directories with files in them, like this:
Does anybody know what has happened to Kino - the video capture utility? Used to be packaged by packman for Opensuse but doesn't seem to be available for 11.2.
Is there an alternative I can use for video capture - or has packman just not gotten around to adding this yet?
Is there a way to make the (router's) USB port to work in OpenSUSE? I have a external HD were I would access files from when connected to the router with the shareport utility but it only works on windows. I was wondering if it could work in wine? And how could I do it?
And how can I make a network? I have never made a shared connection between computers. I don't know the correct term but I would like to share files with my brother and sister which I just converted from Ubuntu
For some time now, that the "Run command" window (which pops up when clicking alt+F2) doesn't show the 4 buttons, it shows just an empty black rectangle.
I have another system which is installed with the same kde4.4.5 rpms and I don't have this problem. I went over kde configuration files and can't find the cause.
Attached is a snapshot or the problem :
I recently noticed that when pressing alt+tab to scroll between windows, only the icon of the window is highlighted when in the 2nd machine there is a bounding box which the surrounds the icon and the text.
I think I'm ready to install Linux openSUSE physical on my Laptop. NO VMware Workstation anymore...But before I can do that I must be sure that Linux works on my System.--- SYSTEM ---
OK, should be enough for the first, ask if I forgot some Hardware...Because I can't find any driver, and I'm not sure. I'm a LINUX NOOOOOOOOOB!!I really want to install Linux openSUSE, I'm MICROSOFT/WINDOWS HATER since 1 month now!! PS: Wine can't start my favorite Programs like Project64 a N64 Emulator. It fails to start a game! I think the graphic plugin crashes... | The exact error message is: "Failed to extract ZIP Archive" or "Failed to load file".
When I use the -p switch for the package p7zip-full (program 7z), it only password protects the extraction process but it still shows the list of files when you try to view the contents of the archive whereas the graphical compression utility has a feature to not show the list as well. I read the man page and can't find the feature for the CLI equivalent. how to do this using the CLI?
I need to know, how can I make an archive passworded, that means, I will set a password for this archive and nobody can open it without this password. The archive is .tar.bz2.
I'm trying to extract an RAR file which has my stuff on it from university, they use Windows Vista Ultimate so i thought i would be safe when saving my work to my flash drive. So i saved my work with the program winzip. when i got home i put in my flash drive and asked Kubuntu to extract only to find i don't have a RAR program to extract so i asked to install one via the Kpackage Manager and everything seemed fine so i asked it to extract again and said cannot extract unknown file. so i went through the terminal to install again and to make sure they were no bits of the install missing and i got this.
robert@HP-COMPAQ-LINUX-KDE:~$ sudo apt-get install unrar-nonfree [sudo] password for robert: Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done
Package unrar-nonfree is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source
E: Package 'unrar-nonfree' has no installation candidate robert@HP-COMPAQ-LINUX-KDE:~$
Is there any other way of extracting my work as i need to get my essay open and finnish it before monday. Also why is it saying that the package is missing? and what is the other source? Is there a way to decrypt this RAR file that vista has made?
Also one more thing once ive managed to decrypt and extract my work what is the reccomended format to between vista and kubuntu so i wont get anymore issues?

I am stuck trying to write a script that does the following :
1. loops through all subdirectories of a given directory
2. for each found subdirectory, first create an archive carrying the same name as the subdir itself
3. then moves the actual subdirectory to a different path
Here is what I have so far: my base dir is /home/bob/Bureau, and it contains two sub dirs, "florissant 86 a" and "saule 84" I would like to create one archive for each subdir in /media/public/atelierPhotoArchive and then move the folder entirely to /tmp/photo.write
Everything goes well until I have to either tar or loop through the file with spaces in names
This last statement outputs different lines after each space in my lst file
Question 1: Is it possible to make it output once for each line in the file ?
Question 2: Is it possible to do some exec tar in the find command? I had difficulties extracting the "short" name for the archive ("saule 84") without /home/bob/Bureau, it is possible only with the printf %f, but how in the world can I get this value in to the exec option ?
Is there a way to access a Samsung DVR (model 9016) so that the footage can be archived? The DVR has an IP address, but nmap scans shows all ports are closed. Would like to archive the footage before it get overwritten.
Are there any volatile archive for squeeze? I have been running this before on lenny, so I was sure I was getting the latest antivirus updates for ClamAV?
I want to untar a package from one directory to another directory, directly from the command prompt. I want to untar the joomla package into the htdocs directory of xampp. How to do that directly from command prompt ? The reason i am asking this is if I try the "drag and drop" way, it won't be possible as xampp is stored in /opt directory and without super-user authentication nothing can be saved into it. You can argue saying that why did I untar xampp initially in su mode ,but that had to be done so that apache doesnt give me any start-up problems.
I have a ton of music that I would like to upload to an on-line storage site. Ideally, I would like to keep the file organization structure intact, but am limited to 50mb file size.
Is there a way to compress this whole directory without going through and compressing every folder individually, while maintaining less than a 50mb file size?
