OpenSUSE :: Utility To Edit Files Without X11 Fired Up?
Jul 23, 2010
I want to edit files while in runlevel three. I am trying to learn how to navigate my entire system via CL. Whenever I use gedit in runlevel three, is says, "cannot open display"
Is there a utility to edit files without X11 fired up?

I was on Ubuntu 10.04 I used the Disk Utility to edit the partitions.
Here is the table it's showing:
Here I deleted 79 GB patition from FAT32 to NTFS and deleted 50 GB space that was ext4 partition where SUSE was residing the bootloader was of SUSE that was working using the same utility.
After that with a live cd of ubuntu I tried to recover the grub but there was no device.map file. Later I found the partition table absent.
The utility shows above table but Gparted shows only 500GB free space without any partition. Please help can't loose all the data.
I can access the partitions in live environment I can't even install a fresh OS because It also shows 500GB unallocated space.

Is there a way to make the (router's) USB port to work in OpenSUSE? I have a external HD were I would access files from when connected to the router with the shareport utility but it only works on windows. I was wondering if it could work in wine? And how could I do it?
And how can I make a network? I have never made a shared connection between computers. I don't know the correct term but I would like to share files with my brother and sister which I just converted from Ubuntu

I was able to convert a Real Estate Firm from using Microsoft OSS to OpenSuse 11.2.The Real estate agents in the firm are pleased and some are not but it's the cost of doing business and saving money.I am at a cross road or should I say I have come to a bump in the road. Most of the agents create their flyers and signs in Microsoft Publisher, I tried Open Office 3.X and I'm unable to open or edit the files in question.Do have any suggestions or could you point me in the direction of a solid solution that will help me either convert the files or a program that can be used with-in OpenSuse 11.2 that can edit the files

I just dual booted Open SUSE on my computer, and am pretty happy with it. But, in order to use my wireless card for it, I need to install a driver. The wireless card is a Realtek 8191 SE. I've downloaded a driver, but I have no idea how to configure it. I've tried pasting the files into /lib/firmware, but it won't allow me to edit or paste any files into the folder.

Due to a disk crash I've had to rebuild my Debian Lenny system. For some reason I can't get my cron-fired backup scripts to run. They will run manually.
It looks like crond is not running. If I try to start it, here's what I get:
Pancho:/home/lloyd# /etc/init.d/cron start
Starting periodic command scheduler: crond failed!
MORE INFO:
lloyd@Pancho:~$ /etc/init.d/cron start
Starting periodic command scheduler: crond/etc/init.d/cron: line 54: start-stop-daemon: command not found
failed!
[Code].....
Clearly the problem failure to find start-stop-daemon is not the problem and I'm still in the dark.

iam trying to send sms using gnokii utility in linux firstly i did sudo apt-get install gnokii after that i got a gnokiirc.gz file in /usr/share/doc/gnokii/sample/gnokiirc.gz file here after that i did gunzip gnokiirc.gz then i transferred my file from the /usr/share/doc/gnokii/sample to home directory by using copy command as copying files to home is not allowed so i used sudo sudo cp gnokii /home after that i changed the port=/dev/ttyUSB2 and model=AT in the gnokiirc file in the home directory and then i wrote gnokii --identify
[Code]....
i followed as in the [URL] and [URL] and except this "Note that you will need read/write permissions on whatever serial port you specify in .gnokiirc."(iam confused what is my serial port is it ttyUSB2)

I have lots of files I need to put in my /var/www/ folder (Apache http server). I thought I understood how to edit it:For single files: sudo cp file /var/www/For opening files: sudo gedit /var/www/fileBut I can't use the above for a thousand files, and I really can't afford the learning curve of BASH scripting at this time. So if there a way I can do this the GUI way (drag and drop and all that) without having to add myself in the group permissions for the /var/www/ folder?

I use a linux machine at work and a mac at home. I can ssh from my machine at home to my work machine. But the only editor that I have access to on the command line then is vi, which I don't like.
Is there a way to use gedit on my mac to edit files remotely over an ssh connection?
This page says that it can be done, but I think that it assumes that you are using gedit on ubuntu. On my mac (os 10.5.8) I don't have the "bookmark" option when I click "connect to server".

Got my T2i a few days ago. Shot a bunch of short MOV files. Trying to do simple edits like trimming the beginning and ends. Nothing else.
Cinelerra 4 - no sound
Kdenlive - aside from crashing all the time, renders with unacceptable artifacts.
Lives - spends a long time making proxies then crashes
Avidemux - crashes on save/render
Kino - plays back first frame then last frame. Kinda funny but not.
Open Movie Editor - Does nothing at all
Open Shot - Can't find any libs
PiTiVi - Tools? We don't need no stinkin' editing tools.
Will Lunmeria be released before I die?
Will Lightworks be released before I die?
Is it time to retrench back into Windows 7 where there are numerous editors that actually work? Sure, costs money but the free stuff just dont work.
BTW, VLC plays the files back beautifully -- no skips, no jerks, sound completely in tact.

I have a directory with hundreds of html files.
For all the files I have to:
- delete all the row from the beginning of the file to the sentence "<img src="immagini/_navDxBottom.gif" />".
- delete all the rows from the sentence "<br clear="right" />" to the end of the file.
How can I do that?

Does anybody know what has happened to Kino - the video capture utility? Used to be packaged by packman for Opensuse but doesn't seem to be available for 11.2.
Is there an alternative I can use for video capture - or has packman just not gotten around to adding this yet?

I have rented a remote dedicated fedora 7 system. The service provider provisioned the system and does not allow direct "root" access to the system.
I currently use putty to login into "user1", switch to "root" using su -, and then edit the file.
I would like to edit the "root" file directly from my home XP system which has a SFTP connection to the remote fedora 7 system (using Aptana RadRails).
I am not sure how to do that. I had 2 ideas but I am just guessing and afraid to proceed with so little knowledge.
I considered editing /etc/group and changing the line
from
root:x:0:root
to
[Code]...
