Ubuntu :: Update XFCE From 4.6 To 4.8 In Xubuntu 10.04 64 Bit?
Aug 2, 2011
Is it possibile to update XFCE from 4.6 to 4.8 in Xubuntu 10.04 64 bit?It seems like every guide on the internet refers only to 10.04 32 bit release, 10.11 (32 and 64bit), but no Lucid 64 bit!
I was thinking of creating an extremely minimal version of Xubuntu using XFCE. I have a Dell Mini 9, a netbook that uses a wireless-g card requiring bcmwl-kernel-source to work. What I would like to do is use either the alternate CD or mini.iso minimal install file to perform a command line install-style installation of the system. So far, what I am thinking (from reading this [url].... article:
HTML Code:
http:[url].....is to start off with these packages to begin with:
xorg slim (if possible with 9.10, unsure if it is still available. in short, i want to use a lightweight display manager) xfce4 xfce4-goodies xubuntu-default-settings bcmwl-kernel-source aptitude
My opening questions are: Should I go with mini.iso or the Xubuntu Alternate Install CD (or the Ubuntu one)? If so, which one? What additional packages will I need to make the hardware accessible and fully functional? All I can think of so far would be sound (I'd like to stay away from PulseAudio if possible, it wreaks havoc with my computer), my webcam, and the memory card slot, if additional packages are needed for it?What other "core" packages should I include in this list? Should I include Synaptic, or other packages, and why? What do I need to take into consideration, since this is both a directly- and battery-powered computer?

After installing ubuntu, if one wants to try other desktop variants, whether installing KDE-desktop / XFCE-desktop over ubuntu is the same as installing Kubuntu / Xubuntu over ubuntu? If not, what is the difference, which is better?
I have a netbook with Ubuntu 10.04 installed on it, then I installed the netbook-launcher via synaptic. I then installed xfce4 from synaptic (not xubuntu-desktop). What's the difference,if any, between installing xubuntu, and installing ubuntu then installing xfce?I know that the themes, splash, gdm theme, and default apps are different. But is that it? Is my system still effectively Ubuntu?
I just installed a fresh copy of Xubuntu 10.10 on a penstick and everything was working fine at work and at home. Now when I got to the work this morning I connected the stick to my office network and I got this error: PHP Code:
Xubuntu 11.04 is skinned to how Canonical felt it would be best, now I do like it, but I was wondering if there is a way to get XFCE to the way it actually looks by removing all skinning?
I installed Xubuntu 10.10, fresh i don't configure or installed another program, i only installed nvidia drivers (I have a Geforce 9600 GT video card). The entire operating system, and xfce 4.6 was working fine. After, I make an upgrade to xfce 4.8, and when i loged on, everything loaded ok: xfce 4.8 version is working fine, the panels loaded and i can add items.
But there is a problem: My wallpaper image doesn't appear on desktop (only brown solid color), it doesn't show icons, i can't change wallaper in configuration panel (i can add an image but it does not appear in desktop), when I plug in a pendrive usb icon does no appear. And when I right click on the deadspace on the background the right click menu does not come up.
When i open desktop folder in thunar there is information, but icon files does not appear in desktop I thing that maybe is a setting that i can solve typing something in terminal, but i don't know what, i searched in google and in this forum and i found only one post but not related to xfce 4.8 and it was not useful[URL]...
I just installed a fresh copy of Xubuntu 10.10 on a penstick and everything was working fine at work and at home. Now when I got to the work this morning I connected the stick to my office network and I got this error:
PHP Code:
Could not look up internet address for localhost.localdomain.This will prevent Xfc from operating correctly. It may be possible to correct this problem by adding localhost.localdomain to the file /etc/hosts on your system
Why did this error present itself if nothing was changed? All that was done was that is was tested at work and at home.
When trying to make my Xfce desktop in Debian 7 (wheezy) look the same way as in Xubuntu 12.04 (precise), I am able to (by copying some files from Xubuntu packages) make the fonts render the same way, set up the same desktop and icon themes etc and make everything look identical, with the exception of the fonts...
Since that, if I choose the font "Sans 10" for my desktop, in Debian - with all the same anti-aliasing options, and such, that I use in Xubuntu - the text looks smaller, everywhere, compared to Xubuntu.
So... How come this happens, if I have chosen the same font "Sans" with the same size "10"?
Below, are the different results, depending on the OS in question.
In Debian Xfce, I get this:
While, in Xubuntu, I get this:
I remember this same thing happening, once, when I was experimenting with setting up an Openbox desktop environment, on top of an Ubuntu 12.04 command line install, where, if I used LightDM, as the login manager, I would observe this same font size "reduction" (in, at least, some of the applications), with the theme I was trying to set up, while, if I used GDM, as the login manager, I would not observe this same font size reduction. (And, so, it seemed that some GTK library(?), being used by the GDM, prevented this from happening(?)...)
Also, I read somewhere, on the Internet, that Xubuntu builds Xfce on top of GNOME(?) (libraries, I guess)...
Could it be that, by installing some GTK library, the fonts will "return" to normal size? Or, do I have to configure something else, somewhere?
(P.S. - I've also tried choosing the size "11", in Debian Xfce - in case it's a matter of different values used, for the numbers, in each OS - but, if I do so, it only makes the text bigger than in Xubuntu, with the size "10"...)
I'm using ubuntu 11.4 ,during switching bitween ubunu, xubuntu, xfce desktop environment I lost my task bar. now I have no access to all the software.the only icons I can see are the ones I had on the desktop.
i install xubuntu 10.4 last night and worked great then i let it update last night and now im really stuck img340 is what i get on desktop last night img 343 what i get now everytime idk how to get out of it
I just installed xubuntu xfce edition on my netbook cause I got sick of windows7 starter. It's up and running now and I got it to connect to the wireless internet, but I can't upgrade it. When I tried to do it through the upgrade manager, it just says "waiting" after I put in my password and hit the check mark for "apply upgrades". Idk I waited for like 2 & half hours. I first assumed it was downloading the stuff, but it shouldn't have taken that long? Then I logged out and logged back in and tried to do it through the terminal, but that didn't work either.
I using Xubuntu 10.04 with Xfce 4.6.1 and i want to update an 4.6.2. After some hours of googling i find nothing... no way to simple update xfce official/unofficial repository for lucid not exist and basic way for update x/ubuntu from auto.
I recently installed Xubuntu (9.10) in my computer, but... I have been having intermitent hard disk problems, and so I decided to google a little and after reading this:
[URL]
I did use Synaptic to search for smartmontools and then install it.
Synaptic complained that it couldn't autenticate the packet, but I figured this was happening because... this is not an application supported by Canonical? I clicked and installed the packet (well, in fact, I *think* it has installed two applications, not just one).
Then later, I saw one of those arrows at the top right of the screen, and clicked it to install updates. Synaptic told me to update SUDO. Hmm... serious. And then even more: it told me that it couldn't autenticate it I stopped the installation and registered at these forums.
And more: before posting, I tried to reproduce the "error" (and again, stop before installing the "suspicious" SUDO update) but Synaptic now autenticated it troubleless and installed it.
Well, now I have a LOT of questions:
1. Where do I place this post?. Security?. Hardware problems?. Update and installation? (Linux noobiness?)
2. my hard disk?. I've read somewhere that an application called "fsck"
3. What may have happened with Synaptic?. Why wouldn't it autenticate a SUDO update?
4. Have I done something wrong?. Something unrepairable?
5. Can I trust the SUDO version that now I have installed in my system?
6. How could I check what has Synaptic exactly installed?. Is there any log file anywhere in my system?
The title bars / window decorations are missing since the last update done about two days ago. I have AMD64 / nvidia 6600 / 2GB / compiz. Latest driver is installed for nvidia and it was working without any problems since 9.04. Now I find that desktop visual effects are selected as 'None' and I am unable to make it 'extra'. Earlier it was set as custom and I had no problems. I have searched the forums and tried many solutions without any success. Now I am running metacity (metacity --replace)with no visual effects, 'compiz --replace' brings back the problem . Is there any way of enabling visual effects // compiz now? Or do I have to re-instal the whole thing
last night I updated F12 XFCE on my Acer Aspire One 8Gb SSD, there were about 140+ issues to update.
after reboot the dialog to select a user and login appeared, continuing nothing shows up -- no menu, no taskbar, no volumes, just the beautiful F12 background.
pressing ALT - F2 I am able to start commands, eg Thunar shows up displaying all volumes, files and even NFS remote drives. my conclusion is that everything works except the desktop...
how I can start the XFCE desktop environment so I can use the GUI?
Using XFCE with OpenSUSE 11.3. XFCE's Update Applet runs without superuser privileges. It finds updates without problems, but when I try to install them, it reports that it failed to authenticate or something like that. I have to start YaST Online Update module in order to install the updates. Is it possible to enable XFCE Update Applet to prompt for superuser authentication or to directly use YaST Online Update as panel applet, like in KDE?
I'm a new openSUSE user. Thought of giving some other distros a try, so I started with openSUSE.
I installed the Xfce packages and when I went to go install a panel plugin, it said that it needed to install some other stuff, including an update of xfce4-session to xfdesktop. After I did this, I could no longer see 'Xfce session' in the "Sessions" part of the log-in menu when I tried to log-in again.
I recently installed a base Squeeze system and then did apt-get install xfce4 to get the XFCE DE. Is this XFCE 4.0 or is it the newer version? This is kind of a stupid question but I haven't been able to divine a concrete answer out of Google. If "apt-get install xfce4" indeed doesn't install the newest version of XFCE in Squeeze, then how can I get it?
Since update-manager was removed from Debian Jessie, I am looking for something similar or a way to install update-manager for 8.2. I would like a GUI.
I have tried gnome-packagekit, but some of the commands don't appear to work or it seems incomplete and I don't know of a way to test to make sure that it is working.
Other sites recommended to use smartpm. However, I cannot seem to find the plugin xfce4-smartpm-plugin in [Xfce Goodies] that would work as a notifier.
Unattended-upgrades does not meet my specifications, because to my knowledge there is no GUI configuration for this.
Though Debian Jessie is a great distro, I am finding it difficult to recommend to some newer users because it does lack a GUI updater/notifier at this time.
I am not having a lot of good fortune with Xfce, this time. The LiveCD had a kernal error, and after doing an install, the update chokes on dependency errors. I tried unchecking the problem update files, but then I ended up in a loop that I couldn't find what else was causing these problems. This doesn't seem to be a big problem listed in this forum, so how do I resolve this?
Like for instance, if I have Ubuntu Lucid Lynx installed with XFCE, and it has an applications made for XFCE. will the applications also work on say some other distro like, Wolvix, that is an XFCE-based distro~????
What I am trying to say is: Do applications that are made for XFCE, work on ANY distro that has XFCE installed?
i installed Xubuntu on my system having a dual boot with Xubuntu and windows xp but when i select to boot on Xubuntu it freezes and gets a message saying that the file hal.dll in system32 cant be found. Before showing me this message i tryed to uninstall the Xubuntu inside from windows xp because several problems showed up after installing Xubuntu. I can boot on windows xp but i cant boot to xubuntu and cant uninstall xubuntu.
I downloaded the 6.06 version of xubuntu because i have a laptop that doesnt support high graphics mode, and i wasnt able to figure out how to get it to run in low graphics mode. i figured that i would get a version from a while back, and then update it up to the current version. now, to the problem. I was able to upgrade 6.10, but now it says Ubuntu version 8.04 available, so i tried to update it. it gets most of the way through the part where it says calculating or something like that, and then it says: "Can't install 'xubuntu-desktop' It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a bug." with an option that says close at the bottom. when i click close another window pops up that says: Could not calculate the upgrade A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport. Then the window just closes... anything that i could do to get rid of this problem? EDIT: Is there any way to update directly from an .iso file on the desktop?
Is it possible to install Gnome-panel in Xfce? I'd like to completely replace xfce-panel with gnome-panel. It is possible the other way round so maybe this way too?

I tried xfce4-XfApplet-plugin but it doesn't work the way I would like to.
I have Xubuntu 9.10 64bit and Win7 on the same HDD in a duel boot setup. How do I get Xubuntu to see and use the Win7 partition of the drive? I have some video files that I want to watch from my Win7 partition. Also, have they fixed the login screen issues with Ubuntu 9.10 yet? Mine will never log in and this time I simply got lucky and it worked.
I am coordinator XFCE Uyghur translation team.https://translations.xfce.org/languages/l/ug/) I almost finished Uyghur translation for xfce-4.6 stable branch and development branch. now I working on apps .I installed Xubuntu and Ubuntu, bu there is no XFCE Uyghur translations. When I can use this translations in Xubuntu or Ubuntu?
