Ubuntu :: Stuck At Initamfs While Trying To Update From Ubuntu 10.10 To 11.01?
May 12, 2011
My computer got stuck at initramfs while trying to update from 10.10 to 11.01 from the live CD. I do not know what to do to go back to my 10.10 sytems. When inserting 11.01 live CD it gives me the option to install 11.01 but lossing all my files and I do not want that. do you have an idea of what could be the problem and how to solve it? how to go first back to 10.10 before updating to 11.01 or updating without lossing my data? I have HP pavillion running very well since two years in Ubuntu.

I am running Ubuntu Lucid on a machine (32 bit version). When I run apt-get update it gets stuck at 99%. I have also other variants running in Virtual box. (ubu student, mint-debian, Ubuntu Maveric). All the OS have this problem. Searched through the Debian bugtracker, they've had this problem at least since 2008. It seems that it worked until the update the other day I think it was last weekend at least on lucid If there is a connection problem at the server end shouldn't it at least time out or something giving you a message that it couldn't access the server, I mean it does but only if I hit cancel. Or control+c in the command line. How can one update if the update manager isn't working correctly?

I went to update manager about 4 days ago to check for updates, it downloaded all the new updates and while installing them, I remember I was doing something else at the same time and I am not sure if that is the problem that caused this, but the update manager since then gets stuck at applying changes almost in the middle right here with the cursor blinking:
Code:
Get:1 Changelog for ark (http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/k/kdeutils/kdeutils_4.6.2-

I've got a bog standard install of 10.04 LTS running as a mail server. An update has stalled on a "Configuring grub-pc" screen, the forward button does not move me forward? How can I resolve this situation? Seems like a bug in the update process?

I made the 'mistake' of telling Update Manager that I didn't want to install the Adobe Flash Player Plugin Version 10', when Update Manager offered me the option. Now it's still there, grayed out, I can't install it (what I want to do) or remove it from Update Manager.

Got the network settings set up, tried to open firefox - nothing, wouldn't load. went into update manager and started updating the software. The update manager got stuck on updating Grub, I left it to do it's thing while I slept hoping it would finish. I wake up, go back to his pc and it's still stuck on grub, not really anything I could do but shut down his pc and try again, well, his pc doesn't even want to load Ubuntu now. I tried booting up several times, then tried the restore option in the loader, but all I get is this: [URL]...

I updated my server via SSH from another computer. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 on my old laptop. I updated it at the 1/3. But now i experience problems! Since the update there where Radeon driver updates which made Ubuntu not to load X. [URL] You can see the update @ 1/3. The computer is a HP 6715s. As I can remember there is a Radeon X1250 in the computer. How can I get the old version working again without reinstalling?

this is a minor but annoying problem and I hope maybe just a simple fix. I have a weather monitor in my top panel. Sometimes it gets stuck and can't update. How do I restart these little panel applets or whatever they are called? I don't want to restart or even relogon for such a trivial problem, but it is annoying. Not sure about the relogon, but I know a reboot fixes it. (running AMD64 bit lucid).

Dell Inspiron E1405 - 160 GB drive with 2 partitions - I think only 1 partition was used for windows and ubuntu Used wubi to install 10.04 - both XPP and 10.04 worked fine after repairing the XP install My boyfriend used Referencer (.reflib) in Ubuntu 10.04 to organize and tag about 900 documents. He spent around 9 hours on the project and its VERY IMPORTANT. I am a dumb ***, forgot the project was on the computer and updated to 10.10 via update manager without it backing up. Now I cant boot to XPP or Ubuntu - "error: no such device:", "grub rescue" My main concern is getting the data back. I would rather uninstall WUBI and install Ubuntu on the 2nd partition (wish I would have done this in the first place but 10.04 was my first Ubuntu install and I didn't know any better). I have to get this data back! I have tried the following and cant locate the referencer (.reflib) file or the .docs and .jpgs booted to USB using my 10.10 netbook remix USB install USB stick - I can see the windows files pulled the HD out and connected it to my Ubuntu netbook, an XPH and W7 computers -cant locate data

I'm not sure what caused it, but it happened right after running 'yum update'. It may be because it installed a new kernel, and there are now two kernels listed in my grub.conf and at boot; 2.6.31 and 2.6.32. System boots through a list of things it's starting up and stalls out at ATL or ADL or ADM maybe. It hangs there for a minute or so then flickers. This happens every time at boot. It's a bit difficult to post more information since I can't get past that part of the boot process, and I can't seem to be able to skip it either. It may be worth mentioning that this is a mini-itx motherboard. Intel Atom 330 1.6, 2GB DDR2, onboard GeForce 9400m. It's a zotac ionitx-a-u. I've installed a fresh copy of Fedora 12 lxde.

As a struggling nubie (i have only been using Ubuntu on my laptop for a year and loving it!) i tried to install ubuntu onto my other PC (Powermac G5 dual core 2.5ghz sata hdd PPC). I Originaly wanted to install to a seperate harddrive but with the open firmware on the ppc it seemed a little complicated and i went for a normal instalation.I was told that the alternate CD would be the only one that would install to my type of pc correctly. The instalation seemed to go okay, though at the end of the software install it flashed up with an error message saying that i had not finnished this task corrrectly. seeing as the error message was only after all packages had been retrived i carried on regardless.
I then rebooted after instalation and i can only access Ubuntu through the command line (no GUI) i tried sudo apt- getupdate and sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop I then get the message;"Media change: please insert disc labelled 'Ubuntu 10.04 LTS _Lucid Lynx_- Release powerpc 20100428' in the drive '/cdrom/' and press enter"I tried it with the live "desktop" CD and the alternate CD but neither of them seem to work giving me the Error "Unable to fetch some archives..." I searched for a release that corresponded "Ubuntu 10.04 LTS _Lucid Lynx_- Realease powerpc (20100428" but i couldn't find a release on google apart from a page of server releases with the same release number.

I finally gave in tonight and upgraded to 10.04. When it went to restart, it wouldn't boot back in. I got the error: Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
-Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
- Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough?)
- Check root= (did the system wait for the right device?)
- Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev)
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/6cb7dd44-88ea-4345-a661-4bbd**** does not exist. Dropping to a shell! BusyBox v1.13.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.13.3-1ubuntu11) built in shell (ash) (initramfs) Ok, so when I was upgrading, I chose to "keep the existing version" of the boot file or something (forget the wording, but I get the impression it's the menu.lst). This may affect things. Ok, so I'm staring at the (initramfs) line on the screen. Where should I go from here? I'm working with a normal ubuntu desktop install on a toshiba netbook (worked just fine with 9.10).

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on my Acer TimelineX 4820 TG, and everything was messy. I updated the bios, and it got a lot of things done but I still have a couple of problems:
1) Almost every time I boot my notebook, it gets stuck on the splash screen (I am using the open source graphics drivers), and it will get stuck 3-4 times and require manual restarts until I can login properly. Also, the applet icons get mixed up or lost on the upper gnome bar.
2) When I install the proprietary ATI drivers, my screen is not recognised (at least I think so), and I am stuck with a terminal and no graphics at all.

We have some Ubuntu x64 8.04 servers that sometimes get stuck when rebooting. The only thing we see on the screen is "Loading, please wait" and some stuff below. I am attaching a picture of the monitor. We have this specific server set to reboot constantly while we try to figure out the issue however we don't know where to start, can we look at logs at this point (probably not since the hard drives aren't mounted yet), can we add debug info?

When DVD is inserted in the drive, it mounts and is read perfectly. But after some time of inactivity disk and drive becomes "frozen". Any attempt to acces files on the disk leads to drive spin-up, and no response from the drive and disk for several minutes. "eject", "umount" and eject button for this drive in this situation fail. after some time of "spinned-up-frozen" the drive spins down. At this moment it is possible to eject the disk by drive button, close the tray (with the disk) back, and the disk is again mounted and read properly (until next period of inactivity). "dmesg" during the "freeze" time shows the repeated disk error messages:
Quote:
"dd" for this disk (at the moment of non-freeze) passes fine, copying all the data without problems, so disk quality is not the issue.

I recently installed 10.4 on my laptop and I love it, so I wanted to install it on my desktop. It's a somewhat older computer, AMD3000+ nForce 2, 1.5 gigs of Ram and a Radeon x1650. Whenever I try to start the Live CD I get the error soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 61s and it doesn't continue.

I started my computer up in ubuntu today and got an error while it was running through a system check. It said "Errors were found while checking the disk drive for /". I pressed F to fix it and a while later, instead of booting like it normally would, it went to the terminal.
It asked for me to login, and when I did, it said:
/usr/lib/update-notifier/update-motd-updates-available: 52: cannot create /var/lib/update-notifier/updates-available: Directory nonexistent

I removed my Ubuntu 10.04 partition from my hard disk with GParted because it didn't install properly and there were no solutions available. After I removed it, I set it up to extend my Vista partition into the unallocated space. It's been going for three hours so far (which I expected) but the progress bar is now stuck. The timer's stopped and everything; it's not increasing infinitely like when your internet cuts out when downloading something, it's just stopped. Here's a screenshot:[URL]..
I know to resist the allure of the Cancel button, but I don't really know what to do here. It's been sitting here for about half an hour with no sign of budging.

I just upgraded to 10.04 Netbook Remix. When I boot, it gets past the splash screen and to the desktop. Before it can load anything, it acts as if it is looping. The wallpaper loads, the screen blinks white and then it loads the wallpaper again... then a white screen, then the wallpaper.I've tried to bring up the terminal and can't do that. I've also rebooted in recovery mode which didn't help.I'm at a loss. I'm on a windoze machine now since I can't get on my netbook.

I am installing UNR 10.04 but I get stuck at the partition because I want to dual boot with windows and I am afraid to go far without professional advice. What i want to do is install ubuntu on my D:/ drive and keep xp on my C drive. This is the current state of my hard drives at the moment (screenshot.png). I don't know what all the boxes to the right are for either. Also my D drive (which I want ubuntu on) has ext4 on it from a previous failed attempt to install linux mint. Because of this when I go to install ubuntu it shows xp on the C drive and linux mint on the D drive although the installation was botched and I cant really boot into linux mint. I have provided a screenshot of this too (screenshot-1.png). How to install UNR on my D drive properly. Iknow I need to add a swap partition how do I do that?
