Many times now when I boot up, xfwm4 seems to crash, leaving me with a static desktop. I can open a terminal and type: xfwm4 and it restarts with all its compositing loveliness.how I can investigate the cause of this and fix it?

I recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI like to start Emacs as part of a login script and leave it running for the duration of my login session (which is typically weeks).
I have scripts to call emacs-client which will allow me to use a file-manager or Windows Explorer to locate files and right-click to edit them in Emacs.
I often end up with a lot of emacs windows (frames) open and I like to just be able to close them by clicking on the MS-Windows or KDE X button at the top-right.
The trouble is, if the window is the last one, this will shut down emacs which will lose all kinds of interesting history information.
As a work-around I use C-x 5 0 which won't let me close the last frame but this is often not as convenient as using the mouse
Does anyone know how to configure Emacs so that it can intercept the Window-Close button of the last frame to either request confirmation or simply disallow it?
On MS-Windows, disallowing closing of the last window may cause logoff to hang if emacs is still running but I'm not too worried about that.
I'm using XFCE and find that its pager is horrible. With my current theme, the active pager has the same colour as all other workspaces. So I tried fbpager, which I am familiar with from Fluxbox times. The problem -- it is decorated in Xfwm4. As I understand, that WM has no option to undecorate a window, so I tried Devil's Pie. However, xlsclient cannot determine fpbager -- it just isn't there in the output. Thus, I cannot seem to get fbpager's application name in order to tweak it to lose decorations. I tried guessing it to no avail . Devil's Pie just won't see it. It works with other windows however (I've tested it with deadbeef and Pidgin).
If not, what pagers would you suggest? Preferably one that doesn't sit in the panel or tray and also not sawfish pager which wants to install sawfish as well. I've recently installed ubuntu, and right away from a fresh install programs would crash whenever I closed the last window. It doesn't give me any error messages, so I don't know what the problem is , just poof the programs is gone and I have to launch it again. This happens in almost every program, I've used except rtythmbox. it's not a big deal for the small programs that load instantly, but for firefox or openoffice it's big pain in the neck.

I am using CentOS5.2 and gnome 2.16, sometimes (not very often) when I open something and close it by clicking the CROSS on the top-right corner. The application crash and I lose all control (no keyboard anymore), I have to reboot the system by reset the machine. What's going on?
Yesterday, when I logon as root and run service setup, after I uncheck a sevice in the list and then start it, I click the CROSS on the top-right corner of the window, it popup a window (in the background) to ask me to save it or not, but then I total lose the control, no mouse, no keyboard. I try to reset the machine many times, but everytime when I repeat the same operation, it crash again. Seems that if I don't close it, everything would be fine!!!!
Bluefish seems to crash whenever I drag the side window all the way to the left. I'm using it on windows 7 mostly just curious to see if this also happens on Linux and maybe what could be causing it. That's the error message I get This application has caused Runtime to quit in an unusual way

However; when I go to change it so it does it in the same window either through edit properties or system/preferences/file management it does not open and instead a bugzilla window opens as it crashes (taking my desktop with it until it refreshes)

Although the update did not complete when I rebooted and invoked Update Manager it reported that the system was up to date. How do I reset the system so that I can install the updates?
I upgraded an older system from jaunty 9.04 to karmic 9.10/ Following the upgrade, and about six hours of stable use, I ran the synaptic package manager, to pull in fvwm-crystal and a couple of other nits. Synaptic went into its usual tiring Rebuild Index while the resource hog update-apt-xapian ran away gleefully with the cpu pegged. for longer than I've ever seen it... about 15 minutes, and then the system crashed. and, I mean it crashed hard. I have not seen linux do this in years. Not just a seg fault, the whole machine just crashed (cpu, display, keyboard, the works). Restart and no problem, until I ran Synaptic (Rebuild Index. several minutes, crash).I played this game for a while; thinking the system might just might be overheating... let it cool down, and retried.same result. I tried running one last time, and this time pressed the reload (on Synaptic main panel) prior to the crash.it pulled in the repository updates and completed the Rebuild Index. (no crash)
I have run Synaptic several times since that. downloaded some goodies, and have had no further crashes (although, it does run Rebuild Index every time I start it.and update-apt-xapian pegs the cpu while this is going on. The question(s) I have are:
1) I was not aware that an apt these days can bring down the kernel (no panic, no logging, just down....) How is update-apt-xapian tied into the kernel that permits this vulnerability?
2) There appears (from searches) to be a problem with Synaptic or at least with xapian...?? What is going on with this resource pig..?
3) If I disable xapian and use sudo apt-get instead, instead of Synaptic, does this solve this resource problem?
4) Is there another forum area where this might be addressed besides general?
Every single time I enter the network manager to edit connections is crashes on exit. I am running opensuse on an Asus eee PC 1000HE with an Atheros network card. The crash report follows :

As an extra point. I wish I could disconnect individual networks instead of just disabling networking to disconnect. I think the newer version of the network manager does this.
Last week I upgraded my Ubuntu 8.04 to a 8.10. While my ever so loyal machine was performing this business, I started my diner, once in a while having a quick look at how things were going. And they were going fine. The last thing I noticed on the screen was that upgrading was at about 3 minutes from finishing, and when I got back to my PC I was confronted with a black screen. Later on I found out that the reason for the crash was a malfunctioning USB-hub in which my mouse was located.
Anyway, I couldn't get my Ubuntu running, the only thing I got to do was reach the log-in screen, enter my username and password, after which the screen froze. Typing CTRL+ALT+F1 gave me a terminal window, but I had no clue what to go looking for or where/how I could find it.
In the mean time I re-partitioned the HD (75GB), placed the old Ubuntu on a 30GB partition and gave the other 45GB to a new partition on which I re-installed my Ubuntu 8.04. Working from that partition I was able to find out that the old version had indeed upgraded to 8.10 but was missing the <gnome-power-manager> file.
My question now: If I can in any way restore that missing file or point me out some kind of tutorial where I can learn how to do it?
Untill now I have been looking through about a few hundred tutorials, but most of them are written by people who know the terminal inside-out, and frankly are not really easily understandable for newbies.
The fact is: in that old version I have many maps and files which I would like to save (yes, you are completely right: I should have saved them in the first place!) but some of them are for some reason write-protected and I do not know how to get root-priviliges to un-lock them.
I'd like to find a window manager that has mouse support but can also be set up (with least difficulty) in a dual-mode way, similar to Vim.
Here's how it'd work: some simple shortcut like ctrl-space would go into command mode. Ideally, there'd be a visual indicator of the mode, like a few pixel wide line on top of screen that turns green/blue with a configurable colour.
Commands would work like this:
Not essential, but would be nice: shade/darken all but current window, like a setting in Compiz.
I've heard about WMs like Ion, awesome, etc. Which one of them, if any, would be best to modify to work in this way? A big bonus would be if it was scriptable in Python, but I'm not counting on that..
I am meeting some problems on my opensuse 11.2 system in the last week, I see an higher load on CPU and the system seems to swap a lot of time. Checking on dmesg I found that at boot time I have a lot of errors: I paste a little part of the full log at the end of this post

The package manager is scrambled in my Ubuntu 11.04. It started with the repositories list being scrambled with multiple entries. Now when the Package Manager is launched it just accesses the hard drive forever. I did give it a half an hour just in case so it clearly stuck in a loop of some kind.
What I'd like to know is: Is there some way to reset, clear, turn off or de-select the added Repositories list from the command line (terminal.) This seems to be the only way since the Package Manager gets stuck. Keep in mind that I'm only slightly competent with Linux and have no idea where the Debian Package Manager data is located or how it works. If I go poking around without at least some guidance I may make things worse.
The problem seems to be spreading. Got stuck again while saving this message. Turned off the system, rebooted to recovery mode and did a file system check. Okay for now. Switching to clean OS on other partition.
I'll check for answers there but it's only Ubuntu 10.04 and I'd very much prefer to have 11.04 working and not have an effectively dead partition and don't want to loose everything on it with a re-format and 2 day re-install process (no installation disk.)
Sometimes (one boot in five?) the Window Manager fails to load at start-up.I can force it to load with Compiz Fusion menu, but would really like ubuntu to load it properly at start-up.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a pretty vanilla install of Ubuntu Lucid. I would like to change my default WM to sawfish. I have it installed, and it works routinely, I would just like to have it start automatically on log-in, rather than Lucid. A few sources have suggested that the way to do this is during log-in. They refer to a "session" I could choose, which would allow me to set the WM. I remember doing this in the past, but can't find such an option on the login page, now.
I have also experimented with changing .gconf/desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/ using both gconf-editor and emacs. However, when I change "/usr/bin/compiz" to "/usr/bin/sawfish", log out, and log back in, I find that compiz starts anyway, and the setting in that file has been restored to compiz. Clearly, the gconf mechanism is getting the information from some other source.
I am trying to install clfswm. I am able to run it from a tty. I start a new X server with

It just doesn't work. Actually, I get an entry in the session selection thing, but when I try it, the login screen disapears a sec or two, and then comes back. If after that I try to open a session with another window manager/desktop manager I get a black screen (with a few things in it) that looks like clfswm, but I can't do anything in it.
I have only used kde and gnome until now, and installed openbox to try to see how it works) so I don't know what to do right now.
In case it helps, the installation instructions. I didn't try putting the said line in my $HOME/.xsession or wherever it should be because I thought it would replace the kde login (and that is not what I want). I think what I want is a .desktop file in /usr/share/xsessions/, I'm just not sure what to put in it.

When I log in and after it applies my background and the panels load, the window manager doesn't start right away, so if I open a program it won't have a top to it. I have to turn on Compiz, which turns off every time I turn on the computer. If I set it to normal, it searches for drivers and then the tops of windows appear. I have had to do this every time since I upgraded. I would do a clean install, but I have no way to back up my data since I have so much. How can I fix this?

This worked for me with karmic, but I'm not seeing any way to select a window manager during the lucid log in process. (Sawfish is running fine if I start it with "killall compiz && sawfish &" during an ongoing session.)

I see in this thread the poster wanted the "old ambiance" look.[URL].. Well, I don't mind the new Ambiance look, but my window manager tool bars have reverted to "Old Win 32". They have gone flat and gray. The window bars still look rounded and dark. After I first log in, the window manager looks fine, and then it flips Flat and Light Gray. I've logged in using the "Ubuntu Classic" setting. Someday I'll learn "Unity", but I'm trying to get some work done. I'm running this system in a virtualbox. Irrelevant, right?

I thought, and installed it through the Software Centre on my 10.04 laptop. I washoping/expecting that xfce would then become an option in the Sessions pulldown at log-on, but no such luck. What should I be doing? It is not my intention to switch to xubuntu, just to take another look at an alternative window manager.
