Ubuntu Installation :: Need To Backup Xfce4-panel Config?
Dec 31, 2010I'm thinking of using a GIT repo to get version 4.7 of xfce4-panel, but I need to know if I need to backup any config files before removing version 4.6 through apt. I have several panel buttons that I don't want input again (could easily take 30+ minutes of clicking).
I do realize that 4.7 will become stable on Jan 16, but that doesn't mean it will be available through apt. If someone knows for sure whether it will be, or how I can find out,

Jul 16, 2011Upgraded from 13.1. Certain panel plugins seem to be gone in XFCE4.
When I try to add the Icon Box, Task List or several others to the panel, I get "Could not open 'iconbox' module".
There is an iconbox module in /usr/lib/xfce4/panel-plugins, along with some others, but they all date back to 3/29. In /usr/share/xfce4/panel-plugins, there is a mix of newer and older files.
Did the icon box go away? Do I need to nuke ~/.config/xfce4?

Nov 14, 2015Upgraded my system and again gnome got messed up. Mate doesn't run on Debian 8 so decided to try XFCE4.
How can move the panel to the bottom of the screen ?
I go to applications -> settings -> panel
I can choose between vertical / horizontal / deskbar.

Debian Installation :: Wheezy- No Running Instance Of Xfce4-panel?
May 15, 2011I posted this same issue in the Xfce support forums this morning. So far, no replies. This morning, using Synaptic, I finally upgraded my main Wheezy Xfce 4.6 computer to Xfce 4.8. There were 225 upgrades, plus 33 new things to be installed. It has been about 2 weeks since I last fully upgraded that system, so I'm sure that not all of today's upgrades were directly related to Xfce 4.8.
I waited to upgrade as long as I did because Wheezy's been getting a steady stream of Xfce 4.8 upgrades for the past several days -- I wanted to wait until that stream stopped, to reduce the chances that I would run into an upgrade problem that was on the verge of being fixed.
The only issue I had was that, in the middle of the configuration step (for lib6, I think), it asked me to either stop or restart xscreensaver before continuing (so that I wouldn't get locked out of the current session), so I completely stopped xscreensaver.

Dec 17, 2010I am using DreamLinux. I have pinned a program, that runs in terminal, to the launcher in the panel on desktop. The program's executable file (name: feap) is located in /home/User/feap2.2 After I added the launcher to the panel that runs the file in terminal, the program asks for the input file (text file with alot of commands) when run. By default the program accepts the files that are located in the same directory i.e. /feap2.2 , so I placed the input file in the same directory.
However when I run the program from the panel, and give the input file name, it says no such file exists. Then I gave the file name with full path, but problem was not solved. I have tried alot e.g. placed the input file at other locations, but all in vain. I have set all input file permissions to be accessible by User as well. I will be much relieved if someone suggests where to place the input file for the such program running in the terminal launched from panels?
P.S: If I open terminal, go to the directory (/home/User/feap2.2), run the program's exe file, and then give the file name, it accepts the input file and it give results.
Fedora :: Software Update Preferences Ignores Preferences?
Apr 3, 2010On my system, System->Preferences->Software Updates, as best I can determine, completely ignores the "Check for updates: " setting. It looks as if, regardless of what I set, I get daily checks. Is anybody else experiencing this? Anybody got a fix? I like the idea of having the system check for me, so I don't want to just pitch the program.

It affects a new account.This is my 10.04 desktop that is affected. I have just the default pulseaudio config.

Apr 26, 2011I'm working with a program that uses Open Motif to create all of the widgets, including the Open File dialog box (obviously). However, Open Motif being kinda old-timey, 80's vintage, and for the most part now an abandoned project, it is quite clunky. So, actually what I need to do is to open some files located on my work server. I have already successfully connected to the relevant server directories with Samba, and with programs built with GTK+ (such as GIMP) I can open files across the network because I have created a bookmark in Nautilus, and those bookmarks appear in the Open File dialog box created by GTK+. Now, Open Motif is different: it doesn't see network locations, orNautilus shortcuts. When I type "smb://serveripyadayada" in the search folder, it really doesn't like it and complains. So, what do I do? Can I get somehow Open Motif to open a network location? Or can I do a run-around and place a shortcut in the file system that points to the network location?

Jul 8, 2010So, I had a system failure earlier today. I decide to reinstall xubuntu 9.10 on my computer. Everything goes fine and then when I start getting things set the way I want them, I find that for some odd reason, I can not change my wallpaper in xfce4. Added to that, when I click the right mouse button, nothing happens(yes I have it checked to open the application menu) and when I click in the left mouse button and drag(usually a frame appears), nothing happens.

Jun 27, 2010I recently installed XUBUNTU for a friend of mine. When we configured the panel we could specify to see the daily weather (temperature, ...) and also when we hovered with the mouse over the weather-icon an interesting 6-day-weather-forecast was shown. This is the xfce4-weather-plugin.
I tried to install this plugin in Ubuntu but I could not find this plugin (as expected because Ubuntu is a GNOME-desktop) back. Is it possible to activate this interesting plugin in GNOME? This 6-day weather-forecast is really appealing and I wonder why such a nice plugin is only available for a rather "simple" xfce-environment and not for a more "complicated gnome-desktop?

Jul 20, 2010I just installed the XFCE4 desktop environment after installing 'menu'. I then logged out and logged back in after changing session to XFCE. My question is weather or not my installation and configuration of TOR and Polipo are going to work the same within this environment? Am I going to have to reconfigure? Or is this just a change in how the desktop environment is handled within Ubuntu?

However, CDs made from an ISO, for example, my Debian install CD, are detected and appear on the desktop.

Mar 4, 2011I have had this problem with all installations of Maverick Meerkat. Moving the default clock from the upper panel to the lower panel makes it bahave strangely. When clicked on, it now appears in the middle of the screen (sometimes even higher depending on resolution). This never happened prior to Maverick Meerkat.
How do I go about to fix this strange bug?

Jan 16, 2010It seems that the two DEs read from the same damned autostart file as no matter how much I edit the start up menus for each the applications I want to autostart in Gnome but not in Xfce4 just ignore me and bloody well autostart in Xfce4 anyway.
