Debian Installation :: Wheezy- No Running Instance Of Xfce4-panel?
May 15, 2011
I posted this same issue in the Xfce support forums this morning. So far, no replies. This morning, using Synaptic, I finally upgraded my main Wheezy Xfce 4.6 computer to Xfce 4.8. There were 225 upgrades, plus 33 new things to be installed. It has been about 2 weeks since I last fully upgraded that system, so I'm sure that not all of today's upgrades were directly related to Xfce 4.8.
I waited to upgrade as long as I did because Wheezy's been getting a steady stream of Xfce 4.8 upgrades for the past several days -- I wanted to wait until that stream stopped, to reduce the chances that I would run into an upgrade problem that was on the verge of being fixed.
The only issue I had was that, in the middle of the configuration step (for lib6, I think), it asked me to either stop or restart xscreensaver before continuing (so that I wouldn't get locked out of the current session), so I completely stopped xscreensaver.

First of all - to refresh icon on desktop i've had to install gamin instead fam (after this, icons on desktop was refresh correctly). I don't know that have connection, but who knows. Anyway - my problem. Things marked as red are duplicated entries in menu. How to simple delete them? Menu are not refreshing too - i unmark "Inne" (Others) in alacarte, but it's still visible.

Sometimes I connect to my Debian box from another computer (using SSH on Cygwin or Linux), and once ina while I want to run some console apps. And sometimes some of these apps might complain about "another intance, Error: an instance of newsbeuter is already running (PID: 2496)". Is there a work around for this issue at all(without killing the original instance") ? The reason I do not want to kill the app because there might be 2 users connected to the same machine that might be using the same app.

I'm thinking of using a GIT repo to get version 4.7 of xfce4-panel, but I need to know if I need to backup any config files before removing version 4.6 through apt. I have several panel buttons that I don't want input again (could easily take 30+ minutes of clicking).
I do realize that 4.7 will become stable on Jan 16, but that doesn't mean it will be available through apt. If someone knows for sure whether it will be, or how I can find out,

On a Supermicro 6027R TRF, I run the latest Debian Wheezy. I have a problem with the server, because I cannot control fan speed anymore.
My plan was to control the drive bay LEDs via software, so I installed i2c-tools and ledmon packages. While I was at it, I also installed fancontrol and lm-sensors.
Then I ran the Superdoctor program (distributed on the Supermicro website) that prints information on fan speed, temperatures and system voltages. I ran it only once by executing the command "sdt" as root. After the command completed, the 3 system fans started spinning at max RPM. And this is extremely noisy! The program had run before, but without spinning up the fans.
Since then I didn't manage to regain control of the fans. Even after a reboot the fans start to speed. Also, removing the installed packages again does not work.
I also tried to control the fans with the fancontrol package, but this fails because I do not have a correct fancontrol config file. I am supposed to run pwmconfig first to create such a file, but this fails as well ("/usr/sbin/pwmconfig: There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed")
I have collected the output of sensors-detect, sensors and pwmconfig here: [URL] ....

On my crontab there is an entry to run a script I wrote that backs up my local files to my remote server. It was working great, running once a day. However, I now want to make the script run every hour. The problem is that if there are too manyfiles to transfer (Example:I ripped a DVD in the last hour) the actual backup may take longer than 60 minutes. So I want to modify the script to check if my backup script, based on rsync, is running. If rsync is still running then do nothing and exit the script. If it is not running, execute the script as normal.

Upgraded from 13.1. Certain panel plugins seem to be gone in XFCE4.
When I try to add the Icon Box, Task List or several others to the panel, I get "Could not open 'iconbox' module".
There is an iconbox module in /usr/lib/xfce4/panel-plugins, along with some others, but they all date back to 3/29. In /usr/share/xfce4/panel-plugins, there is a mix of newer and older files.
Did the icon box go away? Do I need to nuke ~/.config/xfce4?

I was wondering if anyone knew a way to enable 'intellihide' behavior for the xfce4 panel. That is, is it possible to autohide the panel only when a window is covering it, as is possible with most docks?

Is it possible to show the output of a command in xfce4-panel? Like you would do with Conky. The Xfce battery monitor consistently uses a bit of my CPU so I wish to run "acpi" (and work out a clever way to just show the percentage) every 5 or 10 minutes in the panel.

I get the following messages while starting up. This also delays my desktop initialisation.
Code:
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...
Setting IM through im-switch for locale=en_GB.
Start IM through /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/all_ALL linked to /etc/X11/xinit/xinput.d/default.
/usr/bin/startxfce4: X server already running on display :0

Just re-installed Wheezy to ssd-drive and noticed that everything works much faster than before. For the older install I made some changes to /etc/fstab (I think) which I found from the web. I don't remember exactly what changes.
Question is: what's the situatation with Wheezys beta4-release and ssd-drive? Do I have to edit something at the moment, or does the installer notice ssd-drive and make everything needed?

I am having a problem.I use Ubuntu 10.04 server edition. Two computers on LAN one with Public Ip A other with local (Class C IP)say it BWith a third computer in same subnet I can access a TomCat application running on B as http://Ip of B:8080/applicationI want to use A as a Reverse Proxy for this application to be reachable from internet. So on Googling I came across some thing known as mod_ajp I enabled that on my Server A asa2enmod proxya2enmod proxy_ajpa2enmod headersbut after that I am not able to understand as how do I define vhost to be able to forward HTTP request which come on A as www.myserver.com/appto B which I can see internally as http://Ip of B:8080/application so Tomcat on B handles this.

I already have a Notebook with windows (for some reason it needs 3 partitions..) and wheezy. When I installed wheezy I create 2 logical partition inside a primary one: one logical for /home and the other one for filesystem. Now I would like to overwrite wheezy and get get jessie, but without touching windows and home.
I already try to upgrading and it went wrong, so I prefer overwrite, what I have to do during "manual installation" phase?

I'm wondering I've read in some places that if people would like to move from a stable branch of Debian to the testing you can usually just replace the lines in sources.list with the testing release and update and then dist-upgrade. Is this true...and if so is it safe?

I upgraded one of my Squeeze installations to Wheezy, but after selecting it in grub, nothing is displayed on screen: no CLI and no GUI. I tried Ctrl + Alt + F[1-7] and I got nothing. My laptop is Acer Aspire 7715Z. I am attributing this to module as there seems to be disk activity, but without a screen, I cannot be certain.

I added the following line to my sources.list
Code: Select alldeb [URL] ..... wheezy main non-free
and then after:
Code: Select allapt-get update
I run:
Code: Select allapt-get install nautilus-dropbox
but I got stuck (console freeze) and I had to reboot hoping to sort out somehow...
After reboot I try to apt-get again but I got the following message (my traslation)
Code: Select allE: dpkg was interrupted.
It's necessary to do "sudo dpkg --configure -a" for correcting the problem
So I went in the console again for that command and I get
Code: Select allConfigurazione di nautilus-dropbox (1.4.0-3)...
Dropbox is the easiest way to share and store your files online. [URL] ....
but nothing fruitful seems to happen; and now how to proceed?

How do I do to control this mplayer instance from another script? I want to control volume and pause it from within the bash script. I know the commands for doing so from terminal, but once mplayer gets started from the script, how do I 'direct' the commands to that specific mplayer instance?

I am installing Whezzy and the installer failed to install grub on the MBR of /dev/sda
My disks are
- /dev/sda : the flash drive with the debian ISO
- /dev/sbd : a small SSD for the / partition (sdb1)
- /dev/sdc + /dev/sdd : a software RAID-1 array with LVM for /home, ...
Grub fails to install on /dev/sda which makes sense since this is the flash drive containing the Debian ISO so no MBR.
I already tried to run grub-update manually on /dev/sdb (with chroot /target grub-install --no-floppy --force "/dev/sdb" ).
It works but the system is not directly bootable. I had access to a second PC to read the grub documentation so was able to boot and to fix my system but this is annoying.
Is it normal to see my flash drive as /dev/sda? Could it be that my flash drive is incorrectly detected as a HD?
Is there a way to force the installer to install grub on /dev/sdb?

I have a server in which I'm trying to install Debian into. There's no BIOS, only EFI boot. The vendor locked it down so there's no way to see it or get into it.
The Wheezy 7.8 netinst CD has EFI boot parameters and works on everything I throw it in, except this one server. Booting it up, the code doesn't see the EFI and boots into normal mode, negating every chance to install it (dozens upon dozens of failed installs).
During boot, I press the [TAB] at the Debian Linux installer menu and get the load parameters (/install.amd/vmlinuz vga=788 etc). What parameter can I add to this line to get it to run in UEFI mode so we can install it?

I have a laptop primarily used for a client work. It is running Debian Wheezy, and wish to keep it intact in case I need to do more work for client.
I would like to install Ubuntu 14.04 alongside Debian, and use Ubuntu as a bit of a play/experiment area, etc... HD has lots of space (600GB free), and as far as I can tell Grub is installed in MBR.
I did some searches, and from what I can tell, it sounds like I can just install Ubuntu from ISO file, specify how much space to use (say 400GB), and that's it. This sounds almost too easy. Once I install and restart machine, will there be selection for what Distro to boot.
