Fedora :: Launch Application With Root Privileges From Gnome Desktop Shortcut.
May 12, 2010I have a java program that needs to be launched with root privileges (from an account that doesn't have root privileges) from a desktop shortcut. The command would look something like this: java -jar /file/location/whatever.jar I've searched and searched and can't figure out how to do this. EDIT*** I would like it to pop up and ask for the root password before it launches the application.

If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." Aug 12, 2011is it would be possible create a Ubuntu dvd that contains the ubuntu server desktop and alternate install opptions, as well as all four main desktop environments (gnome, kde, xfce, lxde) and unity. since much of the data is redundant between each version cd's it would probably all fit on one disk. then all that would be needed is two disks one for 32 bit and another for 64 bit. i really think that this could work.

May 27, 2011I'm running Fedora 15 with Gnome 3. I installed Gnome-Do using 'yum install gnome-do'. I opened it from the Terminal by typing 'gnome-do' but I keep getting an error message that says
Could not load desktop item: libgnome-desktop-2.so.17
Gnome-Do opens but it doesn't display any application I search for and when I try opening the Gnome-Do preferences, it quits.
I installed gnome-desktop-2.32.0-8.fc16.i686.rpm from here: [url] and then installed Gnome-Do. Everything works fine now.

Jun 26, 2011I just installed Fedora 15 with the gnome desktop which looks like the android system for mobile phones, I installed wine which put the icons on my desktop but whenever I install a windows app it doesn't put an icon on my desktop for that particular application. How would I add an icon for those window apps so I can lunch them from the desktop, I don't know if you call that the desktop or just the program luncher either way how do I put an icon there so I can run those windows apps from there?

Sep 6, 2010I have installed KDE from the Ubuntu Software Center. Now I have the following... well, I wont call them problems, rather just annoyances.
1. The mouse pointer is KDE's pointer (I presume) in both interfaces.
2. I have mixed applications in the menus of both GNOME and KDE... GNOME has KDE's stuff and KDE has GNOME's stuff.
3. The Ubuntu screen at shutdown turned to Kubuntu regardless of being in GNOME.
The first and last one is not much of a problem for me, but is there a way of restoring each interface's default menu items? Since I know what I manually installed, I can just enable them again in Main Menu of Administration in GNOME and in KDE wherever that setting will be. If not, can someone maybe just give me a menu list in text or pics (ok, I know this might be asking a lot) so I can at least only have GNOME stuff in GNOME and KDE in KDE.

I like to have my C++ IDE in workspace 2, my Java IDE in workspace 3, and my email, browser and miscellaneous in workspace four. I also use a shell script that executes upon log in code...
Of course currently it all opens in the current workspace... Is there a way for me to specify which workspace each command should start in?

Jan 14, 2011after the upgrade to maverick, gnome-session-save doesn't save applications on shutdown or logout as it did on Lucid.I've noticed the following things:
On Lucid, if I had a stopped job in a shell, the system refused to logout or shutdown, showing a confirmation window. On Maverick, the CPU goes to 100% and then the computer shuts down; on reboot, no application is saved
On Maverick, if there are NO stopped jobs in a shell, I can logout cleanly but only a few applications are saved (eg. terminal, firefox) but others aren't (eg. empathy,evolution) I've checked "Automatically remember application on exit" in "Session management" menu.

Ubuntu :: Gnome Panel Covers Top Part Of Application Window?
Jul 5, 2011after upgrading to Natty (and playing around some with Unity) I noticed that the top part of the application windows are often hidden/covered by the gnome panel (see attachments).
This is particularly annoying for the rdesktop session (second jpg) which I had set up so that it gave maximum desktop size to the rdp session while leaving the panel of top. If you look carefully you see that the "panel gap" is not at the bottom of the screen, while the panel itself covers the top of the rdp window.
It seems like, that the 'anchor point' for application windows used to be '+0+24' (so just below the panel) while now it's '+0+0' in the top left corner of the desktop. I suspect that while playing with unity I reset one of the compiz options which takes care of this. But I can't find it.

Something like
vlc --minimize
Or something similar? this would be helpful to application on startup not crowding your desktop on login.
