Ubuntu :: How To Run A Command Application From Desktop
Feb 18, 2011
I have download many applications that run from the terminal. and I can not access them directly from my computer without remember the name of the application and type it into the terminal. Some of them are just the name of the application but some of them are many commands into one line. So is there any way to add them under the application menu or desktop? I tried the luncher but it does not work.

Looking for a light desktop for a P3/512MB I installed xubuntu and I felt it slow. For a test, just tried installing lubuntu and it was so fast compared to xubuntu. The word here is I would like to move to xfce. Doing another test, I installed Debian Lenny + xfce and was way much faster than xubuntu.
My question: Can I install Ubuntu Desktop command only + xfce ? Is it going to be faster than xubuntu? Is there another recommendation for a debian based distro with xfce which runs faster than xubuntu?

After having installed a certain programme, in my experience it can sometimes be slightly boring if you want to start the application from the terminal, but you can't figure out the right command, which to my knowledge is not always the same as the exact name of the application.
- Is there a way that I do not know to find this "start-up" command ? - Would it be convenient to include this command with the short description of the application as given in Synaptic (shown when selecting a programme in synaptic before marking it for installation etc.)

I'm a beginner to Ubuntu so this is probably an easy question, but: I installed a windows application using Wine and that worked, it launched the application just fine. But now after restarting the computer I can't see how to run that application again. It would be nice to make a desktop icon for it.

This should be simple, but I just don't see it. KDE 4 desktopI have an application located in /usr/Kompozer that I'd like to add a shortcut to on my desktop. It's not on the menu. Runs fine from the command line. Right clicking on desktop doesn't seem to have what I need. I tried using Dolphin file manager, but still no joy. Can copy, but again can't paste a shortcut on the desktop... or so it seems.

How do I kill a python application from the command line? For an example I have 2 applications running. The first is bleachbit and the second is furiusisomount. They are both python applications so they both come up as python under process name. I could kill them by ID number but if there was another way to do it so that it could be automated in a bash script.

This has probably been asked about before.... I would like to start apps in desktop 2, 3 and 4. To start apps during boot, I use two different methods: The .xinitrc file in /home/dan works fine under: "Add your own lines here..." Startup Applications in Gnome | System works well as well. Here, I can enter nautilus /dir and nautilus starts up just fine in that directory. But as I mentioned, I have yet to find a way to direct the program to run in a different desktop other than #1.

concerning controlling the windows in virtual desktop.
a) Say to a application to be launched to virtual desktop 2 for example.
b) How can you ask from a virtual application to be only visible at one virtual desktop. For example I work on virtual desktop 6 and I want to start skype that should be on virtual desktop 2. Right now If I launch the app on virtual desktop 6 it will appear on the same one. Would it be possible to ask for an applicaiton to be launched on an other virtual desktop. If yew how?
