I have a Ubuntu10.10 as a desktop. I all so have a Windows7 starter netbook. Right now I have the net book set up so I can watch movies from my Ubuntu desk top (using XBMC) on my home network. What I would like to do is when I am on the road with my netbook, be able to watch my shows and movies on my PC at home. I am not sure if there is a VNC client that would work on both systems or not.
View 2 RepliesFirst of all: I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal x64 on a Athlon 64 X2 2.1Ghz, with a NVidia GeForce 8600GT(quite old, i know). I Have 2 Monitors and generally use the 2nd to watch movies, music videos, things like that on Windows 7 and wanted to do that on Ubuntu too. But it won't let me drag anything on the 2nd monitor as it holds the cursor on the 1st monitor when dragging programs/windows/anything. Using Xinerama(on Xserver) give strange thing when 2nd monitor is totally black, can't see any menus and can only do anything by keyboard shortcut

How can I watch streaming XviD movies on Ubuntu? Whenever I go to a page with an XviD, all that happens is the little "Buffering" wheel in the corner starts spinning but never plays, and when I click on the "Download and install the XviD Codec" in the middle screen, an error message pops up saying "We're sorry, our content is not compatible with your computer configuration."

The intent is to use Mplayer without X or any other window manager/GUI to watch movies on TV. A simple 'mplayer movie.avi' command works fine, except that it locks out the keyboard and mouse. We're using the latest mplayer and slack 13.0 with the 2.6.29.6 kernel. Using mplayer under X presents no problems, but the use of anything but the console is NOT possible now. The whole problem is figuring out what to do to regain control of the keyboard.

All of a sudden I couldn't watch movies on Hulu anymore, so I have just upgraded Debian from the Etch to Lenny, because I wanted to update to the newest version of Adobe flash. In Iceweasel under add-ons, it says that I have the newest (10.0 r42) version. The old one (9.0 r124) is still listed. It is listed as disabled, white version 10 is listed as enabled. I still can't watch movies on Hulu.

As a result, my vlc no longer works: When I run it to display a movie (any movie, I tried several) I get the sound OK, but there is no image, and the window stays small (like when playing a sound file). This PC would be for Streaming Netflix, Hulu, internet movies, Playing DVD/BlueRay disk, Printer server, and file storage. The things i'm curious about is how well Ubuntu handles streaming movies? I will have to run a work around for Netflix unfortunately, but for streaming video and using remote desktop to access it from our computers

We will be ordering a projector for this PC, but i'm not sure i want a monitor. Trying to find a way i can remote over and play moviesthrough the projector and then close the connection without logging me out. or something along this line.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 and I have got a VNC, FTP, SSH, Apache server running on it. I would love to setup a media server on it so that when I'm away from home I can stream my movies rather than download them via ftp (made even worse by my slow upload speed).
I installed fuppes however I think that only streams to xboxes, playstations, etc :/
Is there a piece of software that I could put on top of apache? So that when I'm out and about I can just open my website and from there open my password-protected media server and stream any movie file I chose?
I want to find a way to stream my home movies online, so that I can watch them anywhere. I want it to have a way to see all the movies I am streaming and just click on the one I want to play. It cannot be in flash format because of quality reasons. I'd rather it be able to support xvid or divx if possible because of its compression ratio. If not the movie would have to be no more then 1.4gbs a movie and still have good quality.
The closest thing I got to this was jinzora. I have also tried mediatomb (but I cannot figure out a way for vlc player to open the files without manually entering each link and I also cannot figure out a way for it to know at what point it is in the movie ex: 43:01/1:00:00). I am willing to use other formats if needed, but the size cannot be anymore then 1.4gb and still has to be good quality.
I have a debian home server right now, I'm using samba for my file server but I was wanting to stream my movies and music to my other computers. My family (the other users on the network) are NOT computer savvy, and to top it off they are using both Windows (xp) and Mac (Snow Leopard) machines. So I'm looking for software that is simple to use that will allow other operating systems to use it. I would think the easiest way would be to stream the music/movies through a home website. I have seen quite a few programs out there that stream music, but none for movies.

Starting up today my usually completely free of clutter desktop is showing all of my home directory folders!If I delete folders from the desktop, they are also deleted from my home directory. If I create a new home directory folder, it also appears on my desktop. In effect my desktop has become my home directory and I don't like it.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have xfce on my machine, running lucid lynx. For some weird reason, I can't change my firefox home page. I've changed it to the same one time and again in preferences, but every time I open firefox, it shows all the files in my home directory, including hidden ones. I uncheck the "show hidden files box", change it again in "preferences", but it still does this. And the home page in "preferences" is set to the right page I want; firefox just won't go there when I start it up. I really don't want my home directory in plain view like that; how do I make firefox recognize my settings?

View 12 Replies View RelatedI've tried pretty much every DVD ripping program available, DVD::Rip, DVD95converter, DVD Movie Backup. My favorite backup program is k9copy (easiest to use and has all the features I need). But no matter what I try, certain Disney movies just won't backup. Specifically, at the moment, many of the Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli films.
After selecting the disc, the program either crashes out immediately, or it starts filling up the memory, slowing everything down, until finally it crashes. I thought updating to the newest version would maybe help (not even available through standard "Update Manager", had to find it myself), but the same problems occur. I'm currently trying with ddrescue, hoping that works. But I don't really like the idea of using a series of programs to get the output I want.
Is there a program that can backup, compress, and convert a Disney movie into a playable/burnable ISO file? Because these films are Japanese, I would definitely prefer something that can output normal switchable subtitles and audio (as opposed to an MPG or AVI that just has the one audio track).
