Jun 22, 2011First of all: I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal x64 on a Athlon 64 X2 2.1Ghz, with a NVidia GeForce 8600GT(quite old, i know). I Have 2 Monitors and generally use the 2nd to watch movies, music videos, things like that on Windows 7 and wanted to do that on Ubuntu too. But it won't let me drag anything on the 2nd monitor as it holds the cursor on the 1st monitor when dragging programs/windows/anything. Using Xinerama(on Xserver) give strange thing when 2nd monitor is totally black, can't see any menus and can only do anything by keyboard shortcut

Right now I have the net book set up so I can watch movies from my Ubuntu desk top (using XBMC) on my home network. What I would like to do is when I am on the road with my netbook, be able to watch my shows and movies on my PC at home. I am not sure if there is a VNC client that would work on both systems or not.

On 9.10 when I want to watch a movie it will give me an error but will also ask if I want to download the codecs to make it work On 10.10 it dont give me the option to get the codecs, I only get the error

Whenever I go to a page with an XviD, all that happens is the little "Buffering" wheel in the corner starts spinning but never plays, and when I click on the "Download and install the XviD Codec" in the middle screen, an error message pops up saying "We're sorry, our content is not compatible with your computer configuration."

Jun 8, 2010The intent is to use Mplayer without X or any other window manager/GUI to watch movies on TV. A simple 'mplayer movie.avi' command works fine, except that it locks out the keyboard and mouse. We're using the latest mplayer and slack 13.0 with the 2.6.29.6 kernel. Using mplayer under X presents no problems, but the use of anything but the console is NOT possible now. The whole problem is figuring out what to do to regain control of the keyboard.

Debian :: Flash - Couldn't Watch Movies On Hulu Anymore
Jan 18, 2010All of a sudden I couldn't watch movies on Hulu anymore, so I have just upgraded Debian from the Etch to Lenny, because I wanted to update to the newest version of Adobe flash. In Iceweasel under add-ons, it says that I have the newest (10.0 r42) version. The old one (9.0 r124) is still listed. It is listed as disabled, white version 10 is listed as enabled. I still can't watch movies on Hulu.

Sep 1, 2010I want to find a way to stream my home movies online, so that I can watch them anywhere. I want it to have a way to see all the movies I am streaming and just click on the one I want to play. It cannot be in flash format because of quality reasons. I'd rather it be able to support xvid or divx if possible because of its compression ratio. If not the movie would have to be no more then 1.4gbs a movie and still have good quality.
The closest thing I got to this was jinzora. I have also tried mediatomb (but I cannot figure out a way for vlc player to open the files without manually entering each link and I also cannot figure out a way for it to know at what point it is in the movie ex: 43:01/1:00:00). I am willing to use other formats if needed, but the size cannot be anymore then 1.4gb and still has to be good quality.

Jul 9, 2011I've been trying to find a way to watch videos from my main desktop computer on another computer I've plugged into an HDTV. I'm such a Linux newbie that I decided to give Mythbuntu a try. It was way to complicated for what I needed, and I'm sure that some more experienced people reading my first two sentences laughed to themselves at my naivety.
What I am trying to find is simple: browsing one computer's home folder from another computer, and playing the videos therein. If there's anything like Mythvideo that requires less than half of the skill requirements, I will telepathically send love to the person that informs me of it.

Apr 20, 2011Normally Update Manager always finds the update to the next version of Ubuntu. It still hasn't given me any notion whatoever. I allready changed the settings from regular to LTS, but nothing changes. There are updates to the kernel, but I cannot download them, so I'm kinda stuck here.

Feb 5, 2010I had Windoze 7 on my wife's laptop, it started running crappy so I install Ubuntu 9.10 via Wubi (so it is not a partitioned dual-boot). I did the latest update, which I think included a kernel update. When I rebooted and chose Ubuntu from the windows dual boot window, instead of loading the GRUB I see an error message flash:

it flashed almost too fast for me to catch - it took about 10 reboots to figure out that much... and then it goes to a screen that says

I tried several different commands (you can prompt it to give you available commands by hitting TAB), but it said it couldn't detect a kernel. Also, before I updated, I had tried to install iTunes via these instructions. iTunes seemed to have installed fine, but I hadn't tried it yet.

Nov 29, 2010I am running Ubuntu 10.10. Normally when I boot, I get the choice to run Ubuntu or the Windows loader, where I choose between 7 or XP. I have just noticed that when I boot now, I do not have the choice of going into windows. This has happened on two of my PC's just in the last few days. I assume one of the updates has overwritten the grub configuration file as I still get the grub menu but not the windows option. I have tried sudo update-grub but this did not solve the problem.

Mar 10, 2011Yesterday did a fresh install of UNR 10.10, all went well with that. After the first log in it found the Wifi and checked for updates. Updated the system and then it went to restart the system due to a Kernel upgrade. Once I did this, that is when the issues started. Firstly when booting up, it just sat at the Ubuntu boot up screen saying:
"The disk drive for /home is not ready yet or not present"
'Continue to wait; or Press S to skip mounting or M for manual recovery'
So firstly I hit S, this presented me with several error boxes (as expected due to setup/config files sitting in my /home folder), I then found that I wasn't able to connect to my wifi (not that it can't see it, just that it won't connect) each time I try and connect it just comes up saying that the wifi is disconnected. Of all the things to fail I was expecting the Bluetooth to and it didn't. Anyway the computer specs are: MSI Wind U100, upgraded to 2 Gig Ram, 320Gig HDD, and wifi card is the Realtek RTL8187SE.
HDD is setup as:
4Gig for Swap (/dev/sdb1)
6Gig for / (/dev/sdb5)
Remainder is /home (/dev/sdb6) (I did make this an encrypted partition)
Can't do any screen shots as I am not able to connect to the internet on that machine (having to use another computer in the house). I have tried to view the fstab file and I am not able to.
