I have just got my 10.04 LTS CD from Canonical.
I was too impatient and upgraded to 10.04. The up-gradation was not without its flaws, but I have worked around a number of issues and I am happily working on it now.
I have installed a number of other software on the 10.04 upgraded version like Eclipse, GATE (NLP software), BasKet Notes, Thunderbird etc. If I install the LTS version will I have to re-download and install all of these things? Or is it portable?
I use only Linux on my laptop and so the stability is very important.

I upgraded a week ago to ubuntu 10.10 (amd64). I was unable to boot in 2.6.35-22 so I have been using 2.6.32-25. I tried again last night after installing updates to 2.6.35-22. Still no luck.I gave up since this was much like what happened a week ago and I couldn't find any solutions then. (I ran memtest then.)

The software manager has been nagging me to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 for some time now. I finally gave in and clicked on Upgrade. After the upgrade completed, my computer won't start. It just flashes Ubuntu for a split second and goes to a black screen. I happen to have the 10.04 CD from Canonical, and I tried that, and it won't launch the installer either; just a logo and a black screen. Since I can't even get to the terminal to diagnose and fix whatever's wrong, I'm installing 9.10 from the CD that I ordered from Canonical a long time ago. I went through all the graphical options just like the first time I installed 9.10, and it's in the process of installing right now.
I don't really have time to futz with it because I need my laptop for when I go and visit my mum for Thanksgiving. Maybe I'll try after the holidays if I can get some feedback on what might have gone wrong with 10.04.

A couple of weeks ago I connected my desktop to the internet and upgraded Ubuntu. I haven't used it since then, until today, when I took the ethernet cord out of my laptop and stuck in in the desktop. The light next to the place you plug the cord in came on and Ubuntu tried to connect, but eventually it just said "You are now disconnected." I restarted and it continued to do this. I plugged the ethernet cord into the laptop and now I am online. What is going on here??

I did the update from within 9.10 to 10.4. Now when Ubuntu boots up, something happens and it goes to busybox. I tried sitting there and waiting, but nothing happened. So I tried typing exit, and then about a minute or two later it finally finished booting.
It's real nice that everyone else is reporting 20-30 second boot times, but before with 9.10 my boot time was around 60 seconds or so, and now it's around 5 minutes. So how can I fix this? Is there a way to post the boot log here? Where would it be located at on my computer?

No matter what desktop I use, there are 5 nepomuk processes and one virtuoso-t process running, taking up quite a lot of CPU in total. These stupid things have been ruining my Ubuntu and KDE experience ever since I upgraded to 10.4. I want to have those things NEVER run again, no matter what they're for, preferably by editing a config file because using graphical settings in KDE hasn't actually disabled them.
EDIT: If I kill the process nepomukservices, it keeps coming back! Who does that??? I installed KDE 3.5 now (instead of the very bad KDE 4). I have no setting to disable desktop search, because the brilliant and good KDE 3.5 has no such useless, CPU hogging, feature. But somehow the evil KDE 4 still manages to hog down my system by keeping to spawn this nepomukservices process all the time even when I'm not logged into KDE4 at all!

I upgraded 9.10 to 10.04 and now it won't boot. The way 9.10 used to boot was after turning on the computer it would go through the bios screen and then a screen would come up and list both operating systems, Windows Xp and Ubuntu. XP would be highlighted and would normally boot if I did not change the highlighted area. If I changed the highlighted area to Ubuntu it would boot into Ubuntu 9.10. Now after doing the upgrade, it gets to the same screen with the two operating systems listed.
When I change the highlighted to Ubuntu an error message is briefly displayed and then it goes back to the screen that lists both operating systems. I think the error message says something like couldn't find Ubuntu, or something similiar to that. Windows XP runs fine when I highlight Windows XP in that first screen, but I want to be able to run Ubuntu. I have Ubuntu on a secondary drive, but shouldn't it have rewritten the upgraded files on that same drive that had 9.10 on it?

I upgraded the Ubuntu 10.04, and afterwards I can't print. Cups won't detect printers, hp-setup won't, hp-probe won't. Tried rebooting, reinstalling HPLIP, & CUPS. Installed latest version of HPLIP. did a purge of HPLIP and CUPS, and reinstalled, rebooted.

I had upgraded to 10.04 but can not use kernel 2.6.32-22.32+, I had to go back to kernel 2.6.31-21. because of the default video driver had change from the one kernel to the other, and I do not know how the correct it. In 2.6.32-22 the font would change and to a smaller size and I can barely view anything because it looks like some two year old puke a box of crayons all over the screen.
Second issue is it does not matter what power-saving mode I am in, in 5 minutes time it with go into suspension. Or right after coming out of hibernate, it will go into suspension indefinitely and no coming out of it and must to a hard boot.

I just upgraded the kernel from 2.6.32-24 to 2.6.32-25. When it was finished it logged me out of XFCE without warning (is that normal)? Now if I try to log in to XFCE the screen goes blank and I just get returned to the login screen. I can log in to GNOME however. I get the same problem if I boot into -24 or -25.

While using Ubuntu 10.04 my system worked perfectly, now that I've upgraded via the Upgrade Manager, there is no sound on my system. My computer is very Ubuntu friendly, as I've never had this problem with any other version of Ubuntu. What can I do? If I need to reinstall 10.04, or roll back to 10.04, how do I do that? If I can fix by reinstalling 10.10 how do I do that. I dual boot with Windows 7 Pro and Ubuntu 10.10.

I have been looking into installing a HASP HL key on Ubuntu and it required an upgrade so I upgraded to 10.10, I downloaded the correct packages it asked for in the package manager when it finished downloading and installing it needed to restart so it did, since I'm dual-booting Win7 and Ubuntu 10.04, I choose Ubuntu in the selection menu, after that it says:
error: unknown command ' loadfont ' .
error: file not found.
I haven't done anything at all really since I don't know a lot about Linux.
Im trying to get this HASP key working because of work.

So I was on 8.04, and I decided to hit the upgrade button on the gui to upgrade to 10.04. Well the upgrade went fine and all...until I rebooted. Now I get this
Starting up .
mount: mounting none on /dev failed: No such device
udevd[984]: error getting socket: Invalid argument
error initializing netlink socket
udevd[984]: error initializing netlink socket

I found some other posts and tried adding the rootdelay=35 and acpi=off but those did not fix it. This is a virtual machine running on VMWare ESXi 4.1.

I have Ubuntu 10.10 with three sessions, KDE, Gnome 3 and regular (along with its safe mode and all that jazz).
When i do: apt-get upgrade (after checking for updates) it will say something like 105 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 removed and 74 not upgraded....
How do I get rid of that 74 not upgraded or force them to upgrade?

When "sudo apt-get upgrade" said packages have been kept back, used "sudo aptitude dist-upgrade."Obtained grub prompt on restart; purged and reinstalled grub using the chroot method. This has become customarily necessary after certain system-wide changes (see my other threads) but I still don't know why. But it's not the main subject of this thread. On restart obtained message saying kernel and fallback failed to load. Restarted and used shift to select 2.6.35-25 (3rd on the list) to load.I inferred that 2.6.35-28 is at fault since the recent upgrade mentioned kernel generic.

I type my name and password in exactly like I did every time I logged in before, and nothing happens, it just gives me a blank username box again.

So I backed up the files I wanted to keep before I upgraded. When I started the install I was prompted with the upgrade option so I chose that. We is seems the whole "upgrade is botched. Certain programs were not reinstalled. Ok that shouldn't be a problem. Well when I went to reinstall them I get pure failures in the programs. From Tor to Firestarter. I also found hidden files from 10.04 in my home folder of programs that didn't make it.
Ok instead of find what is wrong. I am just going to reinstall fresh. My only question is I want my firefox bookmarks. I believe I save them in the back up. I went into the Mozilla folder and copied them. Well I think I just want to be sure. Is the file bookmarkbackup? I know a stupid question but I have one shot at this and want to make sure.
