Ubuntu :: Upgraded From 10.04 To 10.10 - Not Booting After Install

I have been looking into installing a HASP HL key on Ubuntu and it required an upgrade so I upgraded to 10.10, I downloaded the correct packages it asked for in the package manager when it finished downloading and installing it needed to restart so it did, since I'm dual-booting Win7 and Ubuntu 10.04, I choose Ubuntu in the selection menu, after that it says:
I did the update from within 9.10 to 10.4. Now when Ubuntu boots up, something happens and it goes to busybox. I tried sitting there and waiting, but nothing happened. So I tried typing exit, and then about a minute or two later it finally finished booting.
It's real nice that everyone else is reporting 20-30 second boot times, but before with 9.10 my boot time was around 60 seconds or so, and now it's around 5 minutes. So how can I fix this? Is there a way to post the boot log here? Where would it be located at on my computer?
I have just upgraded to 11.04 on my VirtualBox VM, and after I start it, it begins to load, but it stops at the line * Checking battery state... [ OK ]
I have tried the recovery mode, but to no avail. I can access the boot commands and the command line, but I have no idea what to do from either.
Before the above line, there is a highlighted line * PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions saned disabled; edit /etc/default/saned
Had v9.x installed alongside Windows XP SP3 install. Have not used it that much since install. Got the bug to upgrade to v10.
Went through the upgrade process, everything seemed fine.
At the end of the install process asked which dev to install GRUB onto - I selected only one drive, the wrong one of course, and the reboot failed.

Will reinstalling v10 from Live CD fix this? Will this use Wubi or just go through normal install process? Or is there an easier fix to install GRUB on the correct drive to get the dual boot choice of Windows XP and Ubuntu back.
Naturally I need to get back to Windows ASAP - it's the net gateway and print server for my home/office setup.
recently I have installed a brand new machine with 11.2. Machine boots so incredibly fast so I decided to upgraded another older machine from 11.1 to 11.2. Upgrade went fine but old machine boots significantly slower. On new I see message "doing fastboot" and few seconds later KDE starts loading. Amazing. On old I just experience regular boot, speed is comparable to old 11.1.What am I missing after upgrade? Same kernel, almost same set of services. Both machines are pretty regular PCs/x86_64, however old one have faster/better hardware (more cores, more GHz, more RAM, 2 disks in software raid-0).
I upgraded to version 11.4 and now I can not install any application. Not YAST or zypper downloaded RPMs.Firefox and Konqueror can not download links that are rpm. I do not understand what happens. Ties other than rpm, if fully discharged. I tried as root and nothing.
I want to use my old home partition as home whereas currently there is a 35gb partition that was my old home and a new 'home' within /. how to make my old home recognised by my new install of Lucid.

I guess it makes sense, but I was under the - wrong - impression that chroot would build a filesystem totally isolated from the underneath host.

I updated to new ubuntu with the selection to leave the previous version untouched... At boot I try to log into previous version and all I get is 11.04... I dont like the new Ubuntu and I want to uninstall but how?
Recently upgraded from OpenSuse 11.1 to 11.2 and although it didn't go smoothly the first time (computer hung), I was able to complete the install and start. I have added and updated the required repositories.
The following problems persist: 1. I can't shutdown normally. The black screen before shutdown shows something on the lines of 'segmentation fault'...and also 'cannot find fstab or mtab'. I have to restart into Failsafe mode which shuts down properly. 2. Amarok keeps crashing. It used to work fine in 11.1 and I think its one of the best media players out there so I am wondering why. I do have other players and I have used the debugging reporter option for Amarok.
I just installed kernel version 2.6.26-rc2.5.1, but "uname -r" is still giving me 2.6.36-rc2-5-default. Am I booting with the new kernel? How can I tell? If not, how do I create a new boot option?
ran sudo apt-get install chromium, it seemed to install, i closed terminal, couldnt find it under apps, ran the command again, and am now getting this? sudo apt-get install chromium chromium is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
I upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 and found that there was no 3d support with the "nouveau" driver for the nvidia card. Then I linked in the nvidia repo and installed the nvidia driver. After that I noticed I had 3d support but things were a bit choppy, regardless of compositing or other tasks running. It appears that every 10 seconds the CPU load shoots up (on all 4 cores) and during about half a second all other activity is postponed, including mouse clicks, window moves, animations etc. Using the system monitor watching the CPU load, I see a train of load peaks traveling from right to left, 10 second intervals. Also done a graph on "paged in pages", same pattern, peaks on 6500/s. 11.2 Never exhibited this kind of behavior. Since I haven't found any similar postings I thought that some leftover of 11.2 may be the cause of this and since I am not an expert I would welcome any suggestions on how to tackle this.ystem: quad core Q6600, 3Gb mem, GEforce 8600GT, etcFwiw the load peaks are doubled, meaning peaks at 0, 3, 10, 13, 20, 23 etc seconds
I am currently running all my applications off a HD as I was unable to install the grub bootloader on my ocz pci express card (grub won't install on the pci express card as it is a raid0 array). I would like to use the HD for backup only and run everything off the ocz card - with the exception of booting (which is unfortunate but I didn't manage to make the pci express card boot). How is it possible to tell suse during the installation to create the /boot on the HD and the rest on the pci express card and also to allocate the remainder of the HD as empty storage area??
I recently tried to upgrade my openSuSe 11.1 system using the instructions at:

I successfully got the system to 11.2, but the upgrade from 11.2->11.3 went awry. The installation froze during the update, and I had to start it over. The first issue I had to deal with was the fact that rpm had been upgraded and zypper hadn't, so zypper wouldn't function because older rpm files that it would search for had been deleted. After rolling back rpm to a previous version, I managed to complete the upgrade to 11.3 and everything looked good. However, when I rebooted the system, it hangs at a blank screen. More precisely, the system seems to get through all of the BIOS stuff and then hang while loading the OS (I assume). Although I've worked on Windows boxes for a long time, I'm a complete novice at OS installations/upgrades for Linux systems, so I'm not even quite sure where to begin to troubleshoot this. Ideally, I'd like to be able to fix the installation on the system to save the data on the hard drives, but I realize this might not be possible. My first thought was to use a recovery tool that I'd seen on some Linux installation CDs, but I see that for openSuSe 11.3 and on that utility has been dropped. I can, however, use the disk to get to the "Rescue" command prompt, so maybe there's something I can do from there?
I just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.4 and the installation/upgrade worked just perfect. I than followed the instructions in the "New User How To/FAQ", "Multimedia and restricted format" post. I was following the instruction in the 11.4 section. I added the additional repositories as explained. I then was on the section where it talks about going into software management and selecting the "Packman" repository and clicking to "switch systems packages" to the versions in this repository (packman). I than click this link and the "warning" screen appears and I am present with conflict resolution after conflict resolution dialog. It just seems that there are some many conflicts, it just seems wrong and I canceled.
The installation/upgrade appears to have worked just fine. My mail is there, audio and dvd play back worked the first try after the upgrade. I am not clear if this is what I should expect or their is something wrong or if I even need to complete this step for a successfully installation.
After I've installed OpenSuse i don't get to desktop, instead i get to this: ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting
And that's all i get. If i login i just get to do commands. I'm a first timer so I have no freaking idea what I'm doing wrong. I just want to get to desktop.
im installing ubuntu 10.04 on intel mother board. it is installing everything good. after completing the installation system is rebooting and then after restart it is not booting just strucked as blank.
Yet another "dual XP+Ubuntu" boot problem for everyone.
My neighbor wanted to try out Linux as he did not want to pay for Windows 7, so I offered to install Ubuntu as a dual boot. Ubuntu 9.10 boots and works fine, but now Windows XP will not boot. It just sits in a blank screen with flashing cursor after selecting Windows in Grub.
So, it is a Dell, originally with two partitions, one large one with Windows XP and a small one with HP's recovery partition. Here are my steps. 1. Using a Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit CD, I booted into a Live Ubuntu session. 2. Using GParted, I resized the Windows partition. 3. Installed / on the free space, did updates. 4. Delivered to neighbors house, showed them Ubuntu, and when I tried to restart into XP from Grub, I get a blank screen with flashing cursor.
I looked at the SuperGrubDisk and it seems to only work with Grub1, so I did not want to try as at least one OS boots and I did not want to risk messing up Ubuntu as well.
I have installed 10.04 Netbook remix, installation went find and rebooted..Now all i get is a black screen after bios finished loading. I guess it is something with the bootloader
I just installed server 10.10 64 bit edition on my server and I'm not able to boot from the hard drive. It just sits with a blinking cursor. Does anyone know what's going on or heard of this before? If I screwed something up during the install I can redo it, but I did ask it to install the boot loader. I know I have the correct hard drive selected as the boot device in the bios as well.

I wanted to install only Ubuntu 10.04 (no windows) , I installed 10.04 Ubuntu and installation went fine. While booting up, it says boot device not detected. Then I tried to boot from CD, and checked /boot/grub folder, only 1 file is there grubenv. I hope I should have bunch of files in /boot/grub path.
So it looks grub2 was not installed properly. Then I followed instructions from [url] , still not able to resolve the issue.
Im trying to install ubuntu studio 11.04on my new dell. it finishes and boot,just incredibly slow. maybe 10 min to load after login. im able to update, i thought maybe it would fix it with driver updates. still nothing. the only thing i did so far was "pci=noacpi". and that did nothing.

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup,when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because,again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.
Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then,instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing,once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup,then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process,once i finished i continued to the next part,the installation,but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data,after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.
When it tried to boot,appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line,since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version. I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]
Just sucessfully installed a sual boot with 11.2/ubuntu 10.4. 11.2 was installed first, than ubuntu. ubuntu recognizes and displays 11.2 on its bootloader, 1..2 does ot show ubuntu on its boot menu. so this mean I have to edit menu.lst and physically add the menu entry (root, load the kenel, and load initrd)....correct?
I have a working dell deminsions, no problems 2gb of ram, all that good stuff running xp.I have an older HP Pavilion with about 1Gb of ram, running windows 98. There were some issues with the partitions and registries and i want to install Linux over it to fix all issues and make it a working computer again.I burnt the ISO as an image on a cd using, Nero. no problems with the cd. I could not get the Hp to recognize the cd, and it wont boot. So i took the HDD out of the HP and put it into my dell. I can get to the Install part of the setup and that's where it goes to just a black screen with a flashing cursor.I am considering, booting to XP and reformatting the disk, and trying to install it using the HP again.
i m trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on my desktop from usb it hangs when booting so i cant even install it and if i try a diffrent flash drive does nothing but the odd thing when i use unet-bootin it boots up but i get an error on the install Note: i am on 64bit os and my only option is usb
