I have an ubuntu 7.04 which is currently hosting a drupal installation on VMWare Workstation 6, and I wanted to upgrade the linux to 10.10, however when I tried apt-get update it did not work. how to proceed with this? I only have command line available when I launch the virtual machine, no GUI as such with the Linux installed.
I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and my VMware stopped working. I got a message to recompile into the kernel. I followed the prompts and it was unsuccessful. I tried to uninstall and reinstall VMware getting the same error. See below an extract from the log file. Before you can run VMware, serveral moduels must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel. stopped vmware services - ok

I upgraded Ubuntu version 8 to version 9.10 and VMware dosen't work no more. After I launch WVware Workstation a message appears: "Before you can run VMware Workstation, several modules must be compiled and loaded into running kernel." I select install (yes), and after that it's giving me error: "Unable to build kernel module. See log file /tmp/vmware-root/setup-30979.log for details."
I performed a system update yesterday to CentOS version 5.4. Now I cannot get vmware to start. I get the error "VMware Server is installed, but it has not been (correctly) configured for the running kernel. To (re-)configure it, invoke the following command: /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl." I tried running vmware-config but that did not resolve the issue. I saw the bug related to 2.0.x (after the update), but that does not seem to apply to 1.0.9.
I have installed the latest version of Ubuntu Linux (11.04) into latest VMware workstation (7.1.4 build-385536). I have tried to install the VMware tools ISO that came with VMware workstation but It didn't work and the installation seemed real sloppy anyways.
I installed the open VMware tools from synaptic within the guest linux and restarted, everything seemed to have been installed just fine but VMware Workstation doesn't detect it. I'm not sure if the tools are outdated, silent errors happened, or if any manual post installation steps need to be taken.
getting any form of VMware tools to run in Linux and detected by VMware Workstation.
Is it possible to install Snow Leopard 10.6.6 VMware AMD edition (which I downloaded) on VMware linux? It is under Windows 7 so I just need to know if everything of VMware linux (like Hardware Virtualization) is the same under linux as for Windows.
I want to install debian on vmware workstation 7.1.4 but there's a problem! when I try to install vmware tools or open-vm, it can't complete compile modules of vmware. It is a big problem... It seem problem of kernel version after 2.6.37... But I can't find solution. logs.... Before you can compile modules, you need to have the following installed...
I completed the installation of VMWare Server 2.0.2 onto a CentOS 5.4 64-bit distribution. There is a VMware virtual machine file on the server in question, and I want to activate it through the application console.
I did not see anything readily apparent that would facilitate the importing of the virtual machine file. Does anyone have a procedure that can accomplish this task?
I have been using VMware Player for some time to host Fedora VMware images on Windows XP. I have been using Fedora 11 and 12 (both 32 and 64 bit) and recently started to use Fedora 13.
I use as a base the images provided by thoughtpolice. http://www.thoughtpolice.co.uk/
I usually install VMware tools and also keep the images updated (yum update) which sometimes changes the kernel.
I have recently had problems with the snapshots not having a network when I restore them. So far I don't have the problem with Fedora 11 and do have it with Fedora 12 (but used not to). I do have it with Fedora 13.
In each case the problem goes away when I uninstall the VMware tools and comes back when I install them again.
One of the symptoms is that SElinux complains about not being able to do something with /var/run/vmware-active-nics.
It looks to me that something is incorrect in the actions being taken when the snapshot is being restored. It does not happen every time and sometimes the network restores itself.
The network can be restored by rebooting the image.
I'm trying to access the VMWare console from firefox using the VMWare plugin. The problem is that it doesn't work on Firefox version 3.6.8. So how can I access the console?
I am running an up to date Debian Lenny system with vmware 1.08 server installed.
When I run vmware, it appears to start normally. However, when I try to open a previously created image (from a different machine), everything is fine until I hit browse, which causes a screen to pop up that syas "The folder contents could not be displayed VFS error: Invlalid paramteres." and the following shows up on the command line:
im running suse 11.3_x64 clean install along side with Win7 Pro _x64 had a big fight installing Vbox 3.2.8 PUEL edition but i need to test some VMWare products like 'VMWare vShpere (ESXi 4..0.1 - which i couldn't install in a vm in Vbox) ' before putting it in production enviroment in some of my clients. version: VMware-Workstation-Full-7.0.0-203739.x86_64 The installation of vmware was quite simple with no errors. the problem kicks in after the first reboot when i try to run it. before installing vmware i installed the following:

When i try to run vmware workstation the 1st error kicks in: Before you can run vmware, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel:
I have installed fc12 on my core2due machine, and I have installed the vmware server on it, its rpm is installed successfully with out any error, after that a message is displayed
The installation of VMware Server 2.0.2 for Linux completed successfully. You can decide to remove this software from your system at any time by invoking the following command: "rpm -e VMware-server".
Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it for your running kernel by invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl".
I tried this command and find the this message
[Akram@localhost Downloads]$ su -c "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl" Password: Making sure services for VMware Server are stopped.
None of the pre-built vmmon modules for VMware Server is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this program to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes
Using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc". Use environment variable CC to override.
Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.4.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.4.3" anyway? [no] yes
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?[/usr/src/linux/include]
Now it asks me in last lines that "What is the location of Directory of C header files that match your running kernal?"
I keep getting the following msg as I try to upgrade from 10.04 -> 10.10 ... "Could not calculate the upgrade An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be caused by held packages. This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report." I don't think any of the issues above apply - can anyone offer advice on how to get around or "force " the upgrade
I installed Vmware the other day on my laptop, ran fine, installed a couple of programs. Now, a few days later, booted it up tried to find Vmware, but its not there in the menu. Oracle VM Virtualbox is installed (was installed before vmware, but had problems with getting files over to it), has that somehow got rid of vmware? If so, how do i get rid of Oracle VM?
I am trying to ge my vm player to run. I have installed the program. Next, I go to shortcut location. upon startup of vm player it gives me this error:
Before you can run Vmware Player, several modules must be compiled and loaded into the running kernal.

I'm having all kinds of stability issues running the latest version of vmware workstation on Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit. Anyone know if this is a stable config or not? If not, which version/architecture of Ubuntu is?
After long while Vmware is not working anymore.. I think because some upgrade a while ago.. but when I try to run the configure.pl then I get this error.. does anybody know what is wrong?
I'm running Ubuntu 9.1 i386 in test with Vmware 2.0.2. I used Radu Cotescu's patch and instructions to get vmware installed. Everything seems to be running fine in the guest machine (CentOS 5), except I can't ssh from the Ubuntu host to the guest machine.
This guest is a clone of one that is running under on my Ubuntu 8.1 host and networking is fine there. I'm wondering if there were changes to routing or bridging in Ubuntu 9.1 to cause this. I've been digging through google for a while, but haven't seen others reporting any issues. This is definitely particular to Karmic Koala though.
The host's routing table is:
Code:
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 192.168.1.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 2 0 0 wlan0 192.168.0.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 vmnet3
[code]....
My routing table on the Ubuntu 8.1 host differs by the link-local line only, and the guests are exactly the same.I can ssh from the guest into the host, as 192.168.0.2 is the hosts ip on the vm network. The host should be able to ssh to the guest as it does in Ubuntu 8.1.
Opened VMware Infrastructure Web page and created new machine. Still OK
Click on new machine and go to console and power on.
Receive error:
Cannot access virtual machine console. Request timed out. The attempt to acquire valid session ticket for "xxxxxx" took longer than expected. If this problem persists blah blah blah
I suspect this is a problem with Mozilla Firefox 3.6.3.
I just completed clean install of Ubuntu Linux 10.04 to run Nagios. I have Nagios up and running properly and monitoring my windows servers. I have a couple of questions that I can't seem to find the answer to:
1. I cannot ping the Ubuntu VM from other machines on the same subnet. I can ping the Host system from other machines on the same subnet. I can also log on to the Ubuntu VM and ping all other machines on the local subnet. I can also ping the Ubuntu VM from the VMWare host system.
2. I have installed apache and the Nagios software is running correctly but I can't use a web browser to attach to the Nagios web page from other machines on my local subnet. I wonder is this is related to my inability to ping the Ubuntu Linux machine.
Some things I have tried: 1. Disable IPV6 2. Check to make sure firewall is turned off. I ran iptables -L and see no rules
I installed Vmware and the installaion failed. I want to remove it and go back to using VirtualBox (simply because I am familiar with the software). However I am having some problems removing VMWare from my pc. It does not appear in the ubuntu software center and was wondering what command I can use to remove it. sudo ap-get remove vmware does not work (maybe my command is wrong?).
the installation did not complete, it installed fine from the installer (.sh file) however once I start it up it starts to install other components ie. Networking etc. This is where it does not finish installing.
I just installed it and have been struggling with many tutorials to instal VMWare, I already installed wine and can't run my video chat messenger windows clients like yahoo and camfrog properly, lots of crashing and direct 3d issues and can't open cams etc.. so i'm trying to put vmware server 2 on my system and run my windows partition in linux at the same time.. so i can still have my windows stuff while i learn on linux. But i can't get it installed correctly... now I'm not sure what all i've really done.. installed all types of vmware and rpacket software through synaptic package manager. uniinstalled some.. trying to us VM1.x from some tutorials for it to never quit work.. i had a server icon at one time but when i clicked it nothing would happen. my last attempt was on VMware 2 btw i'm ubuntu 10.04. and this is were i first notice the issue.
Stopping VMware autostart virtual machines:
From there its just one thing after the next like...
Eventually it ends with this:

I'm a windows 7 user and i intalled ubuntu recently using wubi executable installer, after some time i installed vmware player in windows. can anyone help me access my ubuntu in the vmware player in windows. all the articles i've read are about running a new installation in vmware player, but i already have ubuntu installed on my machine
how to install VMware Server on Ubuntu Server 10.10?I would like to setup a couple of virtual machines on Ubuntu Server, but I can't find any documentation on how to do it.
Is there anything for Ubuntu 10.04 similar to vmware fusion for MAC. I know there is vmware for ubuntu, but what about something with the functionality of Fusion?
