I installed ubuntu 11.04 64-bit version in vmware workstation 7.1
When I use VMware's unity mode, no windows from ubuntu are shown, is this a known issue?
I was wondering if the "Unity" function of VMware Player will work with Ubuntu 10.10 as the host OS and Windows XP as the guest OS.
I would simply just try it out myself but I am at work right now and I am too impatient to wait until I get home to try it.
Installed Debian 6 (latest stable, downloaded today) i386 under VMWare 7.1. Installed VMWare tools. However, when i activate Unity my mouse won't work at all in guest OS windows, it will only work as if i was pointing to guest desktop. It is all ok in Workstation window.
Unfortunately, there is no xorg.conf, and when i attempt to re-create it using Xorg -configure, the resulting file is unusable, i.e. system freezes when i test it (using X -config /root/xorg.conf.new) and if i just cp into /etc/X11/ GDM fails to load, and manually typing startX in command prompt i get "fatal error no screens detected".
I'm trying to test out Natty to see if I want to run with Unity. I'm not interested in wiping my production machine just to play with it. So this will be a VM install only for now.
So far, not a single alpha or beta nor even the final allows me to run unity. My hardware is perfectly capable (allegedly) of running Unity. The machine is only 6 months old.
I tried the Unity test script in Natty, and it tells me "no" but it also is telling me the wrong video card info. (apparently it is reading virtual hardware, not the real thing)
So how do I get VMWare Player to report or use my actual hardware, or for Natty to "see" the real card? Is this possible? If not, how in the world does ANYONE test Unity without actually installing it on a gamble? (note, a liveCD won't work because with an nVidia card, I have to install proprietary drivers which require a restart - Chicken, meet Egg.)
I am posting this to see if anyone else has had an issue with Vmware Workstation 7.1 using unity mode with a Linux Host. The issue I am having is when I try to move a window from my virtual machine in unity mode the screen crashes and then disappears. Everything seems to work while not in unity mode. I have tried various thing like disabling 3d mode in VMware, disabling various KDE effects. I only have these problems with a dual monitor setup, if I switch to a single monitor everything works just fine.

Alright so i have been waiting for the release of 11.04 for quite some time now. And when i finally get it, and i boot from my liveCD, there is no Unity desktop interface. It's weird, because i can boot in other computers, and it'll work. This tells me there is something specific about my computer as to why it won't work. I can't seem to figure it out. I've heard people say to switch to classic mode, and that'll fix it. But i don't even know how to switch to classic mode.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have problems with unity. It only shows a white menubar and a black sidebar.
I use Ubuntu 11.04 running in Parallels on iMac. Classic gnome works with 3d effects. Tested unity in terminal with a command and everything was green (yes). But starting unity shows only white menubar and a black sidebar without icons and text.
What can I do?
After long while Vmware is not working anymore.. I think because some upgrade a while ago.. but when I try to run the configure.pl then I get this error.. does anybody know what is wrong?

I have just upgraded to ubuntu 11.04 (from 10.10), any unity is not working. 'Ubuntu Classic' works fine (i'm on it now) but on 'Ubuntu', my background loads, but the icons and windows just flicker periodically (within a couple of seconds.
I realise 11.04 is only just out, but is this a known problem? and is there a fix? code...
I had Ubuntu 10.10 installed on my main computer. Having been trying out 11.04 for quite awhile, I decided to install it on my main computer after it was officially released. I did this via an upgrade. Problem is now that I'm not getting any options for unity 3D. On the log on screen i have an option for unity 2D and unity, however both are unity 2D. My computer has a built in graphics card, nothing amazing, but i have happily used compiz effects on it previous to this.
My graphics card is up to it so why is the unity session falling back to unity 2D? Another problem that I'm having is that i cannot get the launcher in unity 2D to move out of the way. I even installed a programme called 2D Desktop Setting to try to fix this problem but selecting the various options to show, hide, autohide, etc have no effect at all and it's really frustrating having the launcher covering up the left side of my screen.
I just upgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 to Natty but to my surprise when I rebooted, the unity interface didn't appear plus the menu bar on the top was cut off. So i started seeing if 3d acceleration was on and indeed it was, but the strangest part is that if i click on the left where the unity bar is supposed to be it will open the application but the problem is that I cannot see anything, I don't know if its a bad upgrade but its really annoying, the only way natty works for me is if I start with ubuntu classic.
Well these are my system specs:
Intel M Pentium 1.8 ghz
2 gb ram
Intel GMA 915
I'm sure its enough to run unity since I have seen other users running it under their Eee pc perfectly later on I'll upload some pics of my desktop all ruined, i've tried already typing under terminar unity --reset but after refreshing everything the desktop becomes even more unstable than.
i have a question about vmware fusion (3.0.1) and ubuntu (9.1) i just created the ubuntu virtual disk yesterday, and have not done anything on it besides change some minor stuff (background, theme, etc). for some reason this morning, the login screen has been freaking out. the vm loads and shows the login screen, i click my name and enter my password, i get the cool music, but right before my desktop loads it goes straight back to the login screen and i have to start over. it does this over and over until i cry and give up. i have tried restarting the vm, restarting the host computer, everything. every once in a while it will randomly work, but then if i restart, back to the same issue
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just updated my 7.10 release to the final release patches/kernel for it (as a step in the process of upgrading the installation to 10.10) when I have come across a very disheartening problem.
Prior to this update, I was running VMWare Server 2.0 with its normaal admin console at localhost:8333 and an applet install under Applications -> System Tools -> VMWare Administration Console. Now that I have updated, both these are missing or inoperable.
However, the VMs hosted by the machine are still perfectly functional. I can login to the via Remote Desktop or VNC as the case may be.
I can also no longer see the /var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines folder or any VMWare folder at all, even when using the full root login and permissions. Find and Search also show a disturbing lack of the 64Gb of VMDK files that are the running VMs.
Any clues as to how I can track down this invisible, but functional install? I do not want to proceed with another update until I get a solid backup of the VMDKs.
I have a netbook with Ubuntu 10.10 with the netbook unity desktop. I have read that clicking the Ubuntu logo top left of the screen should open an 'expose' style switcher of all running applications. However when I click the logo it simply opens a menu screen with large icons labeled Web, Music, Photos & Videos, Games, Email & Chat, Office, Files & Folders and Get more Apps. See attached.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI got several WM/DE installed in my Ubuntu 11.04 Trying to switching them in login menu some works and some doesn't. when it doesn't work, it just comes back to login screen with black screen appearing for short time, almost flashing. LXDE did not work before, when I only had default DE comes with ubuntu and LXDE additionally installed. But now it seems it works after installing some other WM. WM doesn't work currently;
IceWM, JWM.
Is there anything special I need to do to get file searching working in Unity? Currently Search for Files never finds anything in my documents area. I just get "Your Search did not match any files"
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have no idea what happened. When I restarted my laptop a message telling me that my hardware cannot support Unity came up. This is quite impossible, because I've been running Unity with no problems since 11.04 was released.
Compiz says that the interface is unity, and when I checked in login screen, it's not set to Ubuntu Classic or anything, just Ubuntu.
I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and my VMware stopped working. I got a message to recompile into the kernel. I followed the prompts and it was unsuccessful. I tried to uninstall and reinstall VMware getting the same error. See below an extract from the log file. Before you can run VMware, serveral moduels must be compiled and loaded into the running kernel.

I am using ubuntu 9.10 and the vmware player 3 was working fine. But after the kernel headers updated to 2.6.31-22 the vmware player shows the pop up and says it cannot find the kernel headers. But actually, the linux-headers-2.6.31-22-generic are installed. I tried to re-install the vmware player but with no sucess. Is there any way to correct this error.

I've just upgraded my Ubuntu version a week ago and got a problem that the Unity UI won't running after upgrade. My laptop is Dell Inspiron 14R which is i think is more than capable for running Unity 3D. When I rebooted after upgrade there was just a blank wallpaper screen, without Unity interface at all.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI started playing with Natty Narwhal (11.04) last week. I have a Toshiba Portege R700 laptop with 4GB of memory. Firstly, let me say that when I run 11.04 on the bare metal laptop (installed via WUBI) it appears to work flawlessly. That is, both the ethernet (hard wired) network and the wifi network work just fine. The networking problem occurs when I try to run 11.04 as a (Type 2) VM in VMWare workstation with an underlying o/s of Windows 7 Enterprise.
In this mode, the ethernet network works fine but the wireless network does not work. The o/s does not even see the wireless card. I have downloaded and installed about 216 MB of updates from the update center to no avail. I have "bridged" the VMWare "virtual switch" across to both the ethernet port and the wireless port (see below):Basically, it appears that the interface is not being presented to the VM.Also, of interest, Unity which works fine on the bare metal install does not run on the Ubuntu 11.04 VM.
Im using fedora 13 x64 install from DVD. Has anyone else found problems using vmware 7.0.1 or 7.1. My bridged networking will not pickup a dhcp address, and even if I configure static my network will still not work, yet NAT works fine. Even configuring bridged to use a dedicated device doesnt work. Workstation worked fine on Fedora 12 but this seems to be a reoccuring problem in every other release.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy mouse stops working under vmware I have ESXi 4.0. Reboot or (Ctrl) (Alt) (Backspace) fixes the issue. I'm seeing the same thing in OpenSuSE 11.3 running on ESX 3.5. Using the open-vmware-tools as part of the OpenSuSE install. Odd thing is that I have (3) 11.3 machines, 1 has never shown this behavior, I seems to have gotten another to stop by changing the KDE Activity setting Type to "Plain Desktop", and 1 that for the life of me I can't get it to stop.
The first one has been upgraded from 11.1 -> 11.2 -> 11.3. The second was 11.2 -> 11.3, and the third is a fresh install of 11.3. I'm able to fix it for a limited time by logging out or restarting X with Cntrl+Alt+Backspace. I've tried restarting the vmware tools without luck. I'm wondering if it is an Xorg bug.
I have an NVIDIA 9800 GTX. I have 2 DELL monitors connect to this card, one is a 24" and the other is 21".
I am unable to use Xinerama mode with Unity, because for some reason after logging in, I get no desktop interface, only background wallpaper, and I have to force reboot.
How can I setup dual monitors in Ubuntu using Unity properly? Note that I do NOT want to use TwinView, since this results in dead space around the smaller monitor.
I'm running Ubuntu 11.4. I've played with different versions of Picasa, installing the Linux version via Ubuntu Software Center and also using Wine. At a certain point I had several versions of the application installed and things were getting. When I search for Picasa in the Unity application search field (clicking the button with the dot in the centre at the top left of my screen) I got several results for Picasa, some of which when clicked would start Picasa and some which wouldn't. When I remove all versions of Picasa both from Wine and native I still get some results for Picasa which don't start Picasa when clicked.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just upgraded to 11.04 and really like it so far, everything seems to be running smoothly and I had no issues apart from a broken Emerald which I removed (and installed compiz-gnome and then made gtk-window-decorator the default, which fixed Unity segfaulting on Emerald).
My problem now is that when I use the Unity dash to search for something, it takes a while to search and then finds nothing. I'm pretty sure I should have things like "text editor", "gimp", "update manager", so I would think this is some manner of bug.
In addition to that, the following buttons don't do anything if I click on them:
- Media Apps
- Internet Apps
- More Apps
- Find Files
I have installed the latest version of Ubuntu Linux (11.04) into latest VMware workstation (7.1.4 build-385536). I have tried to install the VMware tools ISO that came with VMware workstation but It didn't work and the installation seemed real sloppy anyways.
I installed the open VMware tools from synaptic within the guest linux and restarted, everything seemed to have been installed just fine but VMware Workstation doesn't detect it. I'm not sure if the tools are outdated, silent errors happened, or if any manual post installation steps need to be taken.
getting any form of VMware tools to run in Linux and detected by VMware Workstation.
