So I decided to completely remove compiz with Synaptic and re-install. After removing compiz, compiz was no where to be found in Synaptic. Where did it go? How can I get compiz back? I have a NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT video card using the 256.53 driver.

Ubuntu :: Upgrade To Natty Has Borked My Desktop

May 22, 2011

I'm was running 64bit maverick on an intel i3 clarkdale desktop; pretty much vanilla with the compiz spinning cube desktop displaying on my 720p HDMI telly. On 'upgrading' to natty my pc refused to display anything on the telly but can still be connected to via ssh. Assuming unity was the culprit I installed gnome and deleted unity; after plugging in a VGA monitor I finallly got an output onto a display device, then managed to configure the HDMI telly as a secondary display. Gnome is just a backdrop with no panels at all; I managed to get panels by ctrl-alt-T and typing 'gnome-panel &'; but this was only a temporary fix. If I try to run a terminal now it locks X and I can only restart via the ssh session.

Currently all I have if I boot is the gnome backdrop. The pc auto logs on (as it did under maverick) so alternate logon screens can't be accessed as pretty much all I can do is run stuff via an ssh shell on my other pc.

What I'd like to do is have my desktop how it was before natty trashed it. Preferably without unity or its very irritating scroll bar widgets.

Debian :: Volume Group Not Found After Kernel Upgrade

Aug 7, 2015

This is a problem about linux-kernel-3.16-0-4-amd64 and LVM, I guess. I decided to write this here in case other users who installed their debian system with encryption enabled experience this problem with a recent kernel upgrade.

I use debian jessie. Today I gave the command:

Code: Select allapt-get upgrade

There was a linux-kernel upgrade to 3.16-0-4-amd64 among other packages to be upgraded.

After this upgrade my computer cannot boot anymore.

I get following error:

Code: Select allVolume group "ert-debian-vg" not found.
Skipping volume group "ert-debian-vg"
Unable to find LVM "volume ert-debian-vg/root"
Volume group "ert-debian-vg" not found
Skipping volume group "ert-debian-vg"
Unable to find LVM "volume ert-debian-vg/swap_1"
Please unlock disk sd3_crypt:

And it does not accept my password.

I used rescue environment on debian jessie netinst iso and decrypted the partition and took a backup of my /home. Now I have not much to lose if I reinstall my system but I still want to fix this problem if possible.

I have reinstalled the kernel using debian jessie netinst rescue iso but nothing changed.

I have Timeshift snapshots located at /home/Timeshift but timeshift --rescue command cannot find a backup device, it sees the device as crypted. If I could restore a snapshot it would be very easy to go back in time and get rid of this problem. It would not be a real solution, however.

There is not any old kernel option in GRUB menu. So removing the latest one does not seem as an option.

Code:
Your kernel was built with "gcc" version "4.3.2", while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.3". This configuration is not recommended and VMware Server may crash if you'll continue. Please try to use exactly same compiler as one used for building your kernel. Do you want to go with compiler "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.3" anyway? [no] I submit "y".

After running the Repair installed system from the DVD I get the impression it is doing things twice rather than doing the repairs once on the RAIDed partition. Should I go back to 11.1?

The /boot/grub/menu.lst file now has an entry:

OpenSUSE Install :: Kernel Not Found On Dual Boot System After Zypper Dup

Mar 14, 2011

I have a dual boot laptop with OpenSUSE and Ubuntu. The boot loader used is Ubuntus Grub that came with the Ubuntu installation.

I have done a zypper dup and upgraded to OpenSUSE 11.4. When I reboot my system I can no longer boot into OpenSUSE, Grub says something about a missing kernel.

I think I understand whats wrong here; the OpenSUSE entry in Grubs table hasn't been updated with the changes brought in by the zypper dup (new kernel i guess).

I'm I correct to assume this? How do I fix the problem? Booting into Ubuntu I tried to find /boot/grub/menu.lst to examine it by I cannot find it. I know Ubuntu use a newer version of Grub, does it have a different file layout?
