Ubuntu :: Remote Desktop Not Updating - How To Update It

Jun 1, 2010

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 and enabled Remote Desktop access on the machine. Using vncviewer from my XP box, I can log in just fine, but I'm not getting the screen refreshed in vncviewer. The Ubuntu box is getting all the mouse movements and clicks (I can see the ubuntu box from the XP box - I can see the mouse cursor moving around and I can see the menus being selected, etc.) Those events are just not showing up in the vcnviewer, though. TightVNCviewer version 1.3.10.

FWIW, prior to installing 10.04 I had 7.10 on that box and everything worked as it should. No changes on the XP box. I doubt it's relevant, but I had a power supply failure on the Ubuntu box, replaced that as well as the mother board - some of the capacitors looked like they were ready to go. I believe the new motherboard has a different nvidea-based on-board video chip. Since I had to replace the PS and mobo, I figured I might as well install 10.04 while I was at it.

Ubuntu :: Tar Update Creates Duplicates Instead Of Updating?

Nov 17, 2010

I've tried using a script to run incremental backups. The idea was to use the update switch to just update the files in the .tar instead of creating new ones. However it seems to have created duplicate files in the tar instead of just updating them (refer to screenshot). Is this normal?

Here is the command in the script;

Code:
tar -uvpf /home/jonny/.BackUps/Updating/Documents.tar /home/jonny/Documents

Is there a way stop this but still have them update to the latest version?

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. The Update Manager originally showed the update to Ubuntu 10.04 and I pressed the update button. Midway through the update, my internet died so I just cancelled the update. My internet is working again and I'm trying to update but the update manager won't show the update button. I've pressed check a bunch of times and installed all the other updates but I can't see the distribution update.

Ubuntu :: Updating System / Saying Update Information Is Outdated?

Aug 3, 2010

Ubuntu tried to update, but some problems occurred. The triangle with an exclamation point in it showed up and I rolled my mouse over it.This is what it says:

"The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by clicking on this icon and then selection 'Check for updates' and check if some of the listed repositories fail."

I did what it says and this came up:"The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct."

and in the white box below the message:"Failed to fetch url 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead."

Ubuntu :: 9.10 Update Manager - Updater Froze Either In The Middle Of Updating Or Right After

Feb 6, 2010

I have been having some major issues with the update manager of ubuntu 9.10. I have had 3 instances so far where the updater froze either in the middle of updating or right after, and every time resulted in a corrupted file system. Two times it has happened to me which resulted in once having to completely reinstall and another was luckily saved by using Gparted on the live CD. But now my friend who i installed Ubuntu for has had the same problem. When it happened to me, I was forced to hold the power button to get the computer to turn off as it completely locked up the system. My friend however, was able to use the shutdown menu.

Ubuntu Installation :: Reset Update Manager To Start Updating Properly?

Apr 17, 2010

I am having problems with my newly upgraded 9.10 distribution that keeps locking up. I had started a thread on that but along the way, I noticed another problem with the Update manager. I posted the following text in the same thread but realized that I must start a newer thread since it has its own issues (so sorry if you see this text in my other thread).I had upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 with ISO image and then to 9.10 with ISO image. In between, I did not reset anything in the Update manager (the upgrades were within one day of each other). Since the computer was connected to network during upgrades, I also let it fetch any newer packages as it needed them.

After the upgrade, I started having system lock ups and it requires hard boot. I tried to check for any updates using Update Manager. It reported that system was up-to-date. However, I noticed in the Settings that cdrom was selected in Sources (perhaps because I had upgraded with ISO image). I unselected the cdrom and tried to update the packages. Since I upgraded using ISO image, there is some problem here about recognizing the repository perhaps. Do you think my problem may have stemmed from upgrading twice using ISO images and not resetting the Update Manager in some fashion in between? Although the system did fetch upgraded packages during upgrades. How can I reset the update manager to start updating properly? Perhaps Authentication is an issue?Of course, I am still having trouble with lock up.

OpenSUSE :: Package Manager Update Not Updating Apps

Aug 18, 2011

Was wondering if someone could suggest a reference and possible approach to troubleshooting openSUSE update. I'd always assumed that the openSUSE update (applet) would notify me and update any apps installed from any of the configured repositories. This week I found two applications were not detected and updated, one from the Pacman repository where an update was available for more than 2 weeks and another from the Contrib repository where an update was available for an unknown amount of time.I manually detected and updated both using zypper without any special repository configuration. The SUSE updater has been running regularly installing critical and recommended patches regularly without issue.Am considering

- Maybe somewhere there is a config specifying repositories and/or apps? I can't seem to find something that's applicable.
- Maybe I misunderstood that the SUSE updater isn't supposed to update anything from non-OSS repositories?

Ubuntu :: Updating 10.04 To 10.10 Via CD?

Oct 14, 2010

Due to networking issues within 10.04, I can't connect to the internet to update to 10.10.

I've created an install CD, but want to confirm if I'm doing it right, or how to fix some issues I'm seeing.

First, I get the option to create besides my other OS (Vista and currently 10.04). I've tried to select this option, and it gives 3 options to install:

An SD card I've left in my computer

Sharing my Vista HD
Sharing with 10.04.

The issue is that when I got the computer, I partitioned my second HD (320GB) in half, one that is shared with Vista as a storage dump, the second half Ubuntu (160GB partition).

Currently, using this option forces me to split this half partition between Lucid and Maverick. For some reason, if I try and "use entire partition" the bar shows 2GB as the size of the partition. If I choose use entire HD, it shows the full 320GB. Using the slider can reduce the footprint of Lucid, but can't wipe it out.

Since I haven't screwed around with partitions too much in the last 3 years, I am not too comfortable with using the advanced option, but it seems like the only chance I have to erase 10.04 completely. This is reinforced by it asking about "device for boot loader"

Ubuntu :: Updating From 7.10 To 9.10?

Jan 26, 2010

So I have given up on running slackware on my labtop, beacuse I lack the knowledge on many of the settings and configs in linux. So I have decided to install Ubuntu on my labtop. But I know that I have to install 7.10 beacuse of mye graphic card, ATI Radeon Xpress 1100. I have allready downloaded the driver install file for my graphic card.

The thing I am wondering on is this : I am thinking on installing the drivers right after I install 7.10 and after that I am thinking of uppgrading to 9.10 if its possible. And the thing is, will I keep my ATI drivers installed if i update?

Ubuntu :: PPAs Not Updating / Why Is So?

Mar 11, 2010

I recently re-installed Ubuntu Karmic on a new PC (about a month or so ago), and I just noticed that my PPAs are not updating when I run the update manager. I'm not a complete noob but I'm not all that hardcore or experienced. Is there something I am doing wrong?

When adding a PPA I open System>Administration> Software Sources and click on the "other software" tab. After clicking "add" I enter the APT line (*eg. ppa:banshee-team/paa)
and hit "add source". I hit close and let it reload and that's it.

This method worked fine for me before but now when I run Update Manager it never shows any updates for the PPAs I have added even though I know there is a newer version of the application available.

Ubuntu :: Won't Start After Updating?

Sep 3, 2010

How do I get into safe mode of something of the sort? I thought all I had to do was tap F6 as the computer boots up, it was running perfectly untill I updated it, when I pressed restart it started to shut down and then it just got stuck in a black screen with a small white cursor flashing, and there it stayed I've restarted it a load of times and no luck, I was getting ready to reinstall it when I remembered that I have no other cd burner in the house other than the one on the machine that's just packed up and though I could use a flash drive neither of the 2 I have with me are big enough, the bigger ones are both at work along with my ubuntu instalation CD.

On a second probably unhelpful note I'm getting really fed up with ubuntu it's proving to be about as unreliable as windows, every other week for whatever reason it fancies it just packs up and more frustrating for me is that while I know my way around windows and can usually sort it out I haven't got a clue about how to sort Linux problems out and before anyone mentions it yes it was a relatively new instalation, all I had installed on it other than the OS was the updates up unlit now and XBMC and it all had been working flawlessly for 2 weeks or so!
