Ubuntu :: Update Manager Is Trying To Install Openoffice Even Though Have Removed It?

Feb 14, 2011

I have customized lucid so it is easier on my computer specs. My old laptop only has 256mb of ram. So I have removed openoffice and replaced it with abiword/gnumeric and installed the lxde desktop. I have had this configuration for a month and half now and update manager has never had a problem with it.Now all of the sudden it does and is trying to reinstall openoffice all the time.

Ubuntu :: Install / Update Manager Bugged Enough To Update

Jul 11, 2010

i installed Ubuntu rel 9.10 download as a first time user. all was fine until the update manager bugged me enough to update. i allowed it to download and install the updates for rel 10.04. after the update i started having intermittent GRUB errors at boot. i worked on this problem and without warning Ubuntu returned to rel 9.10. the Linux kernel is still at level 2.6.31-21. rather than do another update manager update i am considering a download of rel 10.04 and install from that. i would then have a backup for rel 10.04. my concerns are my user data i do not have a user partition. also how would the install partition my hard drive. i allowed the install to partition my 9.10 system. my current FDISK output not sure why devices show sda i thought they woud be hda hard drive??

OpenSUSE Install :: Update: No Home, Wrong Keyboard Layout, OpenOffice?

Dec 3, 2009

I updated from 11.1 to 11.2. Before some intelligent person says, I should never update but do a new install: a new install isn't better, then I have other problems to tackle. And I really would like updates to work.Well, I have the following problems and I hope you don't mind me listing them all in one post *it's difficult for me to type on this keyboard layout):1. home isn't found or set up. I have modified fstab to mount /dev/sda6, which is home, but it won't mount it at startup, and also not when it's just using the disk/by-id line that had been put in.

2. the keyboard layout is american, while the system language is set to German (I'm German and would like also my keyboard to know that). I had no chance to change that, even a loadkeys de-latin1 doesn't help3. OpenOffice drives me crazy. It just doesn't start properly, or at all. It doesn't open a number of documents, but it doesn't also give any error message. Sometimes soffice.bin is in the list of processes, but OOo is nowhere seen. After killing the process (or terminating it), I can start it, but have only the opening screen and cannot really open a document.4. printing doesn't seem to work, either.Needless to say that everything worked fine before the update

Ubuntu :: Apt-get Removed Network-manager?

Nov 16, 2010

I was going to arping something the other day and found it wasn't installed. So I used sudo apt-get install arping. It went through fine, I was arpinging happily. I shut down for the night, and then this morning, I couldn't connect to the internet. I do some searching around and get eth0 added to me /etc/network/interfaces correctly, and I'm back online, but I can't see the network manager to connect to a wireless network; not a big deal since I have a dock here, but I might want to go on the move.

So, I start looking around forums and in the process of following some of those guides, I find NetworkManager is not installed! I get it installed and everything managed properly again. My system is working as intended. But now I'm curious what happened, so I start looking at some of the logs in /var/log. Then I find this in /var/log/apt

OpenSUSE Install :: BIOS With A Boot Manager - Update Or Install?

Jan 7, 2010

I had my motherboard fail and had to do a replacement. The motherboard I got has a feature (I don't think I can shut off) that lets you select what drive you want to boot off of. I have XP installed on the first drive and openSUSE 11.1 on the second drive. I am running openSUSE 11.2 with KDE 3.5 and I simply dropped my drives onto this new motherboard. I can boot up (Linux) just fine but am having other issues with my mouse. I am thinking of Updating to openSUSE 11.2 and the current KDE version.

Should I just update to 11.2 or do a new install. I have LOTS of data in my home directory I really don't want to lose and have a partition for data as well that is pretty full. I don't want to lose this stuff. What should I do about Grub with this BIOS that lets you pick which drive to boot off of? Put Grub in the MBR of the drive with openSUSE on it and nuke the MBR of the XP drive?

The software won't install. I have a feeling this is because I can't update my system.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager Wants To Install Rpm And Other Stuff?

dpkg-dev

This looks wrong to me, what could cause it to push loads of dev/build tools and the redhat package manager on me? Edit: Unticking these also unticks a "google-chrome-beta" update below. Does this mean they are now dependencies of that package?

General :: Ubuntu 10.10 Update Manager Not Able To Install Updates?

Installed Macbuntu on my new installation of Ubuntu 10.10. At onset was able to run update Manager with no problem. However after a couple of days and since I did the theme to make my ubuntu look like a Mac...it doesn't want to install any updates it receives. It says another program is running but I'm not running anything other than the Update Manager. Any suggestions as to how to fix this or should I drop the theme and go back to the regular window theme that came with the version of Ubuntu 10.10 I downloaded from the main site.

However, but I get the following message (if I use Synaptic, it freezes):

Ubuntu Installation :: Partial Update - Ffmpeg To Be Removed

Aug 10, 2010

Just wondering if anyone else has this partial upgrade being offered to them: ffmpeg, libavdevice52, libpostproc51, libswscale0 are held back (grayed out) in Update Manager.

I only use Update Manager manager to see if there are any updates and then use sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get-upgrade and sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to actually examine the updates as it shows if anything will be removed without anything to replace it.

And I know to never do a partial upgrade.

Update Manager displays "Partial Upgrade" with the files listed above grayed out.

I did use sudo apt-get-upgrade to install a few packages earlier that were safe to install and now -

sudo apt-get-upgrade currently gives this output:

Code:
The following packages have been kept back:
ffmpeg libavdevice52 libpostproc51 libswscale0
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 4 not upgraded
