I'm quite new to Linux and Ubuntu 10.10 and I wonder if it is good practice to always download and install the available software from the update manager or does it slows down the computer?
View 2 RepliesI started the upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 through the update manager. It started the update to 10.4. After downloading almost 95% of the update, it gave an error message of "could not download certain components. downloaded files will not be erased" and stopped the update. I restarted the PC, and started the update manager again. But now it does not show any option of update to 10.4. how do I continue or resume the update process? I just started using ubuntu about 15 days back. So, I am relatively new to this.

The update was around 10 kB/s and slower sometimes. What is wrong? Just a lot of people updating at the same time?

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

I opened Software Sources to try and remove the repositories, but couldn't find them. Plus I'm not sure if I need to manually replace these repositories with newer ones- I'm still relatively new at using Ubuntu (made the full switch from windows in October 2009). Plus, whenever I do install updates with the update manager, the "last updated" time doesn't reset itself. It finishes installing the selected packages, and the message at the top of the Update Manager window reads "Your system is up-to-date. The package information was last updated 28 days ago.

This looks wrong to me, what could cause it to push loads of dev/build tools and the redhat package manager on me? Edit: Unticking these also unticks a "google-chrome-beta" update below. Does this mean they are now dependencies of that package?
For some weird reason my update manager can't download files from the getdeb.net server.[URL].. Why is that? Is t here a bug in my system or are the server down or something?Because it can download everything else perfectly.

I did a clean install of Natty 32 bit on my desktop last Saturday. Now the update manager wants to remove empathy via a partial upgrade. I waited for a day to see if the issue would be resolved, but it isn't. I cannot see the changelog either. On running

I have a system that has very limited disk space on /var and everytime I attempt to do any updates to the system via update manager it was always error saying that there is not enough disk space. I wanted to know how I can change the download directory of the update manager to a partition with more space?

What I'm looking for is a solution or a pointer in the right direction to setup on our local Ubuntu server a sort of cache. Each day each Ubuntu on the network, checks for updates and downloads, and installs. What I'm looking for is a way for one machine to download the update and then the others to download from the local resource.
A sort of local cache to try and minimise everyone downloading straight from the net for pretty much the same updates. I did a emerge cache many years ago when I was using Gentoo, so I'm wondering what I can use/do here with Ubuntu as we are all loving this distro now.
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but...well, I just installed Fedora after using Ubuntu for a while, and everything has been going good, except for installing upgrades. When I open the Update Manager, it says there is 399 updates. When I click install, after about ten seconds this pops up:Code:An internal system error has occuredA problem we were not expected has occured. View 2 Replies View RelatedIt started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

i installed Ubuntu rel 9.10 download as a first time user. all was fine until the update manager bugged me enough to update. i allowed it to download and install the updates for rel 10.04. after the update i started having intermittent GRUB errors at boot. i worked on this problem and without warning Ubuntu returned to rel 9.10. the Linux kernel is still at level 2.6.31-21. rather than do another update manager update i am considering a download of rel 10.04 and install from that. i would then have a backup for rel 10.04. my concerns are my user data i do not have a user partition. also how would the install partition my hard drive. i allowed the install to partition my 9.10 system. my current FDISK output not sure why devices show sda i thought they woud be hda hard drive??

I have looked elsewhere for an answer and some others have had similar problems, but I have not found a reason for it happening, nor an answer. I wonder if anyone can help me please. I have been using Ubuntu for several months, can use the Terminal if I have the right commands to issue, but beyond that have limited knowledge of the system.
having had problems with getting grub2 to work on dual HDD setup...despite the most excellent advice on the forum i took the plunge and installed 10.10 from update manager within 10.04..... bingo fixed grub and now have dual boot again. but the update manager and synaptic package don't work because of libedata-cal1.2-6 file that remains..following other advice on the forum Advice gratefully received, how can i force an unistall of this package
