View 3 RepliesMPlayer was working just fine last night, but today I'm having problems which may be due to me performing a system update. I noticed that MPlayer was no longer listed in my Applications menu and I no longer had the option of opening videos with it. However, I now had Gnome MPlayer which must have been installed with the update because I never installed it. Whilst going through Synaptic, I found that the MPlayer GUI had been removed, so I re-installed it. However nothing happened when I attempted to open videos with it.
When I tried to use it through the terminal I got the error message:
mplayer: relocation error: mplayer: symbol codec_wav_tags, version LIBAVFORMAT_52 not defined in file libavformat.so.52 with link time reference
I found a bug report on this very problem here [URL]. The conclusion was that the person filing the bug report was using a version of ffmpeg not found in Debian and that he'd need a version of MPlayer built with his version of ffmpeg libs. I'm assuming that this is also the case with me, however I'm not sure how to go about finding a build or simply building a version of MPlayer with whatever version of ffmpeg that I'm using. For reference, I'm using Squeeze.
I have a vista/ubuntu 9.10 duel boot laptop. Last week the screen was broken so it went back to the manufacture. Before that I rename the /etc/grub.d/10_linux file and ran grub-update so that Grub will only show windows boot menu (in case it confuses the repairman) now I have the laptop back and I am eating my own medicine.how to restore my ubuntu boot menus? I can now only boot into windows, although it seems like I can go to my ubuntu partition and change back my grub.cfg (which I did not backup!)but I can't remember the menuentry details. Is there any way, other than manually change my grub.cfg, so that I can boot into ubuntu again?
View 5 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading from 9.04 to 10.04 Conky no longer displays as it used to.I believe it has something to do with own_window_type set to override. If I change this to desktop, dock, or normal it displays.Conky starts without any errors but just does not display anything.
The best lead I had thus far was that it was something in ~/.cache, but even after deleting that and having it recreated still no cigar.
In squeeze, Kazehakase just displays a blank page, regardless of how I open it (from file manager, from terminal, from mail client or from menu and bookmark.) This problem occurs with version 0.5.8-3 (i386) and goes away with a forced downgrade to 0.5.8-2. If I open it from a terminal, the program open to a blank page, and there's no output in the terminal. Does anyone else have this problem, and does anyone have suggestions on what to look for to maybe fix this? I don't see any matching bug reports, but I'm prepared to make one.

All I want is for my bootloader to show "Ubuntu" & "Windows XP" which are the only 2 OS's I have installed (dual booting). At the moment it shows Windows XP, Ubuntu, Ubuntu recovery mode & like 2 more.. which are also Ubuntu & recovery mode. I've never selected the other Ubuntu ones, only the first one. So, how can I remove the ones I don't want to show on the list.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using Ubuntu 10.10, manually installed, on a Dell Studio 15 laptop, dual booting with Windows 7.While a few kids were playing nearby where I was working, one of the pillows they were playing with hit my laptop's screen and moved the screen's hinge backwards, applying pressure past where the hinge ends. This didn't seem to cause any physical harm to the computer, but I moved away from where they were playing, and in the process, shut the laptop, putting it into sleep mode. I opened the laptop and entered my password to unlock it. About half a second after entering my password and displaying the desktop and open windows, it brought up the password prompt again, as if I'd just opened my laptop up and removed it from standby, although I had not in fact touched it since I had entered my password a mere half second before. I thought that that was strange, and then attempted to continue my work. However, although the mouse worked fine, when I attempted to apply a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Alt+2, which runs a 2-finger scroll script and has to be run every time I take the computer out of standby), Ubuntu didn't register it (I didn't touch the keyboard otherwise, although I should have checked whether it worked all =).
I tried it again, and it still did not apply the script. Then I thought, "Oh, the pillow must have knocked something out of whack. I'll restart." When I restarted, grub loaded as usual, but the timeout ("loading the primary in Xs." sort of thing) that it usually displays did not display this time. I didn't notice it at the time; I selected Ubuntu, and it appeared to be loading it, removing the grub menu, but then hung. I waited 5 minutes for the computer to display the login screen, but it did not, so I restarted again, thinking that it might just be something stupid. It didn't work again, hanging again. I tried this with both the most recent linux kernel and the second most recent kernel, neither of which worked. But what was interesting is that Windows 7, which is also on the grub menu, loaded and displayed perfectly, as did GRUB Invaders, a game that can be loaded directly from grub. After this little escapade, I thought something was just wrong in grub.cfg, and it somehow wasn't mapping the Ubuntu menu entries to the appropriate OS and kernel. So I loaded up a live CD, and attempted to look at the linux entries. These are the menu entries 10_linux, 00_header, and 20_linux_xen.

this computer (Yakumo model 331, 386 MB RAM) began running really slowly, crashing when multitasking, etc., but only in Ubuntu Karmic Koala. Kubuntu Karmic has no problem, nor does OpenSUSE. I finally figured out the problem when looking at system monitor: 0 bytes of swap! I have a 640 MB swap partition, which the other OS's are able to access, but Ubuntu no longer does unless I open a terminal and type in
Code:
sudo swapon /dev/sda6
If I do this, everything works fine until next time I boot up. Is there any way to fix this?
I've had Ubuntu 9.10 x64 installed on my Asus G60JX-RBBX05 Laptop for a few weeks now, and for the most part its been working pretty well. Then a couple of days ago, I suddenly noticed I could no longer use the numeric keypad. This seemed completely out of the blue, but its possible I received an automatic Update through the Update Manager that hosed it or something. I'm really not sure.Has anyone had a similar experience
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhy is it always such a PITA to find a list of md5sums for the various versions of Ubuntu. I've just downloaded 9.10 from [URL], but it took me longer to track down the md5sums than it did to download 690Mb on a cable connection. A simple link on each of the many pages from which you can download Ubuntu is surely not too much to ask. And it's not a new problem. I remember having the same problem going back to at least 8.04, if not earlier. For those others looking for the link, here is one [URL].
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq Presario CQ60 with Nvidia GeForce 8200M graphics card. When I first installed Windows 7 followed by Karmic in dual boot I could boot into both OS. Now when I try to boot into Windows, it displays the Windows logo and then drops back to the grub menu. It may have started happening after Windows 7 installed updates. I tried reinstalling both Windows and Karmic again and it again worked initially but now Windows no longer boots. Does anyone have any suggestions about what may be causing this or how I can fix the problem without reinstalling?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI created a LiveUSB and that worked. On about the 3rd use I attempted to update packages - about 174 came up I think (I saw that number on another post which reminded me, hence the precision). Two or three dialogues came up, unfortunately unintelligible to me, a Ubuntu novice. Both concerned grub2. The first I just forwarded on and the update trundled on. The 2nd asked me something like whether I wanted grub to update sda or sdb. I checked neither (against the pop-up help advice). The update completed but when I eventually went to reboot from the USB I got a repeating fatal message: something like "Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.31-17-generic/.dep". I had to switch off. It did reboot successfully from a LiveCD.
