Althought /etc/default/grub has GRUB_DEFAULT=6, after grub-update nothing changes and the default menu entry is still the first. Can someone tell me how to change the Grub default menu entry?
View 6 RepliesYesterday I installed on my laptop (an IBM Thinkpad T42) "virt manager" using the Synaptic Package Manager. I'm running Karmic.
As part of the installation, SPM had me reboot the computer (which is dual-booted with Windows XP, which I use less than 1% of the time). The new GRUB screen came up showing two new initial lines, the first 2 of the following 4 lines:Ubuntu,
Linux 2.6.31-19-generic-pae
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-19-generic-pae (recovery mode)
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-19-generic
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-19-generic (recovery mode)
When I allow the default choice of the first line to prevail, Ubuntu boots up into a condition in which the Wireless Network Connection fails to open, and in which nothing I've been able to think of makes it open.
If, instead, I scroll down to the third line (which was the initial default choice line, i.e., the default choice line prior to the "virt manager" installation), Ubuntu boots up into a condition in which the Wireless Network Connection operates as usual, viz., immediately.
Scrolling down works, but it would be better, it seems to me, to return to the condition in which the current line 3 either becomes line 1 or else becomes the default bootup choice.
I've used SPM to uninstall "virt manager", but the 2 new intial lines in the GRUB options remain. I understand that with Karmic's version of GRUB, viz., GRUB-2, it is no longer possible to change the bootup menu choices easily.
how I can either eliminate the first 2 lines in my current GRUB screen, or make line 3 the default choice?
The first is I seem to have 3 GRUB installs. So whilst I update the one from my live session, the change does not appear in the boot up menu. I had installed 10.10 from a CD into a different partition (sda6), but that will not boot, so I have just deleted this and done another grub install and update. The kernel I am using has just been updated from 10.04 to 10.10 too, and it is this that I use and the Grub I have been working on (sda5).

I have got ubuntu netbook edition installed alongside windows xp and after some custimising i can now only chose the ubuntu option and no others. Can i set settings back to default settings?and how? I guess it would be via terminal commands

Anyone, the boot/grub/menu.lst and etc/fstab file of Ubuntu 10 LTS installed by default on HD (or whatever).
I am using Debian lenny (kernel 2.6.26-2-686).
I changed my menu.lst to use
root=UUID=<long uuid string>
instead of the good old
root=/dev/sd...
I did that because, if I boot with a usb drive attached to my computer, sda become sdb and therefor nothing works anymore since my friend Kernel can't mount it's root partition. BTW, it works wonders using the UUIDs. The story darkens each time there is a kernel update, dist-upgrade resets my menu.lst back using the /dev/sd... format. and BANG... no more booting again. I am good to change my menu.lst back each time.
Well here's what I've done in grub.confpassword --md5 BLABLABLA /grub/admin_menu.lstNow that I enter some password, I can go to that menu and run my pvt. OS.But how to get back to original (or say public or default) grub menu?

I have edited etc/default/grub so that it has GRUB_DEFAULT=6 (to correspond to my XP installation) and GRUB_TIMEOUT="3", but after running sudo grub-mkconfig the grub.cfg file still says set default="0".

Unfortunately, with the various 2.6.32 kernels neither hibernate nor suspend work, so I've installed and use the last 2.6.31 kernel that came with Karmic.Now, I'd like to set it as default, so that I don't need to actively choose it when I boot. The problem is that I can't find a way to set Grub (version 2.0, or 1.96rc, can't remember) to pick the 2.6.31 kernel and if I try to uninstall the 2.6.32-23 kernel synaptic says that linux-generic and linux-headers will also be uninstalled (not just the parts specific to 2.6.32-23).

I'm somewhat of a n00b. I have a dual boot machine running XP and Fedora Core 14. I like my default boot always to be XP. Right now, XP is default BUT every time there is an update to Fedora, it will change the default to Fedora. I now have to edit grub.conf to boot from xp again. Is there a way to make xp always as the default even after an update?

I'm extreemly new to Ubuntu and installed 10.04 onto a partition this morning. When I boot up my PC a menu called GRUB comes up and the list of OS's has ubuntu 1st. If I dont change my selection to vista it automatically boots into ubuntu. How can I change the order or default booting OS? I have seen other people talk about it but I'm not sure if it's up to date.

From what i can see all the solutions on the web want me to edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The problem is that i don't have one. Someone also mentioned that if i don't have a menu.lst file then i should look for the grub.conf file. I don't have on of those either. The closest thing in /boot/grub is grub.cfg but that looks nothing like the descriptions i have heard of /boot/grub/menu.lst file

I regularly update my ubuntu (10.04), and new minor versions keep accumulating on the GRUB screen. Right now I have 5 different versions listed on the GRUB, even though I always select the latest version to work with.
Am I supposed to do anything to get rid of the old version references? Do these old versions affect disk space/performance?
I have several Ubuntu OS, but I always install 9.04 last so that I can get Grub Legacy which works better with my Windows 7 64 bit than Grub 2. I wish to edit and save /boot/grub/menu.lst on the 9.04 OS. When I attempt to do this I get an error stating that I do not have the permissions necessary to do so. How may I obtain the permission?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently installed a 64-bit version of centOS 5 alongside a 32-bit version, which I use. Turns out the 64-bit version absolutely will not boot and I'm stuck with it as my default boot option. Since the grub being used resides on the 64-bit half, I cant edit the menu file but I know theres a way to do this without it, through grub itself. I have about 29 render nodes now with this problem, and whenever they need to be rebooted I have to hook a monitor up to each one and hold its hand through the boot process. How to change the grub menu through grub itself, basically just change the default boot option and then have it stay that way?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am testing my crash recovery strategy for my linux system and I am having trouble with GRUB. I am basically restoring my backup (i.e. tar) unto a different hard drive, but I am having problems getting the machine to boot without me having to type the GRUB commands at the GRUB prompt that is presented when the machine boots up off the new hard drive. I have tried to restore the MBR in two ways (the 2nd one is the one that gets me to the GRUB prompt):
1. Get the MBR off the original drive and write it unto the new drive (all via dd), but that did not work at all: the machine hangs right away during boot up. It seems to hang right at the point where the BIOS tries to read the MBR.

On new drive (new drive is now in place of original drive):
# dd if=mbr+part.bin of=/dev/sda bs=1 count=446 conv=notrunc
2. By using the FEDORA rescue CD, I installed grub unto the new hard drive as follows:

reboot and remove FEDORA CD Using the 2nd option above, I get the GRUB> prompt during bootup. I can then boot into the system by issuing the commands that are in the menu.lst file, followed by the "boot" command. However, I would like for those commands to happen automatically, just like in the original configuration. It seems to me that GRUB is actually finding all its stage files because I doubt the GRUB program (the one displaying the prompt) fits entirely in the 446 bytes it has on the MBR. So, it must be loading its stage 2 (and stage 1.5??) files from my /boot partition. However, if GRUB is loading its stage files off the boot partition, why does it not load/read the menu.lst/grub.conf contained in the boot partition also?

I tried to do my parents a favor by installing Ubuntu 9.10 alongside WinXP on their PC -- same configuration I have on my desktop at home. The install went fine, but since I made a poor buying decision on purchasing a MSI motherboard in the past, Ubuntu immediately crashes after boot (other MSI board users having the same issue, no help from MSI).
The computer tries to boot Ubuntu by default unless something else is selected from the boot menu. How do I change the boot preference from default (choice 0) to WinXP? I tried manually changing this (editing the grub.cfg file), but the file said not to edit, that it's generated by something else...How do I have WinXP load by default instead of the broken Ubuntu?
my Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. View 4 Replies View RelatedI have already had Vista installed on another drive and from what i've read on the webs you get to dualboot if you install ubuntu after vista. when i did install it (i installed on a blank hdd with no partitions, choosing the "erase entire disk" option since for some reason default option was attempting to eat a part of my windows 1 gb drive instead of using disk i specially made for it) and the grub 2 loaded for the first time, there was NO option to run vista. only 2 linux (normal and recovery) and 2 memtests. I've ran linux and went to google this. I found that i should add something to some config files in /etc/grub.d/From reading the readme file i understood i could add my own files that are named like NUMBER_SOMENAME and insert code into them. I'm brand new to Linux and Ubunto 10.04.On the menu bar at the top of my desktop I seem to have attracted some kind of bug!The Log Out Symbol repeats itself across almost the entire menu bar and I cannot remove it. If I remove other buttons from the menu the space is immediately replaced by more Log Out Buttons.When I hover on the icon I get the message 'Log out of this session to log in as a different user' and when I right-cllick to click on 'Remove from Panel' or 'Move' nothing happens.It is not possible to right-click on another part of the menu bar to change the Menu Properties.
