Ubuntu Installation :: Karmic - Failed Update To LiveUSB?

Jan 7, 2010

I created a LiveUSB and that worked. On about the 3rd use I attempted to update packages - about 174 came up I think (I saw that number on another post which reminded me, hence the precision). Two or three dialogues came up, unfortunately unintelligible to me, a Ubuntu novice. Both concerned grub2. The first I just forwarded on and the update trundled on. The 2nd asked me something like whether I wanted grub to update sda or sdb. I checked neither (against the pop-up help advice). The update completed but when I eventually went to reboot from the USB I got a repeating fatal message: something like "Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.31-17-generic/.dep". I had to switch off. It did reboot successfully from a LiveCD.

General :: LiveUSB - Cannot Update Installation With Package Manager

Sep 9, 2010

I have a Win vista dual booted with ubuntu, no problem there, all's well. I used live-usb to make a bootable USB with centos 5.0 I created the usb and it will boot just fine. The problem I run into is updating the installation with the package manager. I run the manager and the system prompts for reboot and I get this error:

Ubuntu :: Karmic LiveUSB Created With Unetbootin Won't Shutdown?

Apr 24, 2010

I've been using a LiveUSB I created using unetbootin from Windows Vista/7.

Whenever I use it to install Ubuntu (done it a few times now) or as a LiveUSB to try and rescue my installation, it never shuts down or reboots. It just starts the cycle then hangs on the white Ubuntu logo. As it never gets past this, I'm forced to hard power off, and I'm concerned this could be damaging my mounted system drives? I've decided I should be unmounting before I try and shut it down now, is there a proper way to do this, and can I fix the LiveUSB itself?

Ubuntu Installation :: Mount Of Root Filesystem Failed: Jaunty To Karmic

Nov 21, 2010

I decided to try to do the 3 distro upgrade stretch from 8.04 to 10.04 this weekend and now I am hung on 9.04 to 9.10.. The upgrade went swimmingly, but I hit a wall upon boot. When I try to load kernel 2.6.31-22 I am greeted with the following error:

Code:

[ 20.879845] ACPI: I/O resource vt596_smbus [0x400-0$407] conflicts with ACPI region SMOV [0x400-0x406]
Mount of root filesystem failed.

A maintenance shell will now be started ... After doing some digging I found this thread which appears to be similar in the inability to mount the filesystem. However, it does not mention the ACPI error. I tried everything in that thread; verifying device ID's, editing fstab options; running a filesystem check, and flipping the UTC option in the rcS file but nothing worked. The OP of that thread eventually did a fresh install of Karmic; but I would rather not have to go that far.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Via The Update Manager Using Karmic 9.10

May 6, 2010

I was so impressed by the screen-shots of 10.04 LTS that i wanted upgrade via the update manager( am using karmic 9.10).Everything went well with downloading the new packages till the point of installation of downloaded packages. Halfway through the installation power went off and when i restarted the system it was stuck at some point with the message

Code: mount: nothing to mount in /dev or something like that. Then i restarted the system in recovery mode and ran "dpkg" to fix broken packages hoping it would fix the issue. It did to some extent that i was type the problem here through the affected system.

The problem is i couldn't send the crash report the first time around and i can't get hold of it now.My system is somewhere between karmic and lucid ("About Ubuntu" shows as karmic and System Monitor shows it as lucid").So i how do i get a clean installation of lucid?

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Failed To Update - Unable To Mount Root FS

May 25, 2010

I wanted to try out the new Ubuntu 10.04, but since I don't have any CD's available I thought I could use my 9.10 CD and upgrade from it.

1. Installed 9.10 on the entire disk.
2. Went to update manager(?) and clicked the button to upgrade to 10.04
3. It successfully downloaded all the files.
4. When installing the new files it suddenly said that it failed to update, and it stopped. Then I went to do a hardware test, but none of the menus were working.

I had to do a manual shutdown, and reboot the computer. This time I was met with an error "Unable to mount root fs".

I figured the upgrade was the problem, so I reinstalled 9.10 to try without upgrading.
1. Reinstalled 9.10 on the entire disk.
2. Went to update manager(?) and started the normal update for 9.10 so the system would be up-to-date.
3. Same thing happened now, it fails to update and it makes my computer useless.

I've already checked my hardware for errors, can't find any. I've checked the CD for errors, can't find any. I had 9.04 on the same computer a few weeks ago, and it was rock-solid. Worked like a dream. I'm using Win7 now though.

Ubuntu Installation :: Update And Upgrade Error Failed To Fetch

I am having trouble upgrading and updating. When updating the file downloads to 99% and then stops. The error message is:

I believe this has something to do with a power outage while upgrading a few days ago. Most of the install completed after rebooting, all except the three 'linux kernel image' files and a few others. Also, as a side issue, Flash plugin and Flex builder are no longer working. This may be unrelated. Does any one have any trouble shooting advice for the issue?

Ubuntu Installation :: Failed Update Of 10.10 Results In Unbootable System?

Feb 4, 2011

yesterday I performed an automatic security update suggested by the update manager on my virtualized (with VirtualBox on a Windows 7 host) Ubuntu 10.10 installation.

The update somehow failed and left me with an unbootable system. When I try to boot, I am told that various folders, files, and what not are missing. Then the system drops into a busybox and leaves me with an (initramfs) prompt.

This happens with all kernels I get offered by GRUB, although the error messages are quite different from kernel to kernel.

Well, the short of it is this: I don't have the slightest idea on how to get back to a working system and this site is the final straw I'm willing to grab. A complete disaster like this following an update initiated and executed by the system is unheard of in Windows-land; at least I haven't heard of it, yet, and therefore I am going to abandon Ubuntu and Linux altogeteher, if there is no remedy.

Ubuntu Installation :: Write LiveUSB Changes To USB

Feb 6, 2010

I'm wondering if it's possible to write changes to a LiveUSB stick. As you probably already know ubuntu gets mounted to a ramdisk to improve performance and save your USB stick's life (I think so anyway, don't quote me on that).

I'm wondering if it's possible to write any changes made, such as changing running services and installed packages back to the USB stick without actually installing ubuntu fully onto the USB stick.

Followed the ubuntu instructions on how to install it and make a live usb. Using a 4 GB Sandisk Cruzer straight out of the box. When I boot to the usb, I get to screen that asks whether I want to run ubuntu from the USB, or to install it on my computer. Selecting the run from USB option shows a bunch of commands cycling through for a bit, then the screen goes black and just stays that way. Not really sure what the problem is. Trying to run the 64 bit version fyi.

Ubuntu Installation :: As A LiveUSB Or VM On A USB Stick ?

Sep 1, 2011

I dont really use ubuntu too much, just for my programming class. Anyways I want to have ubuntu on a USB stick so I can use it on my laptop, netbook, desktop PC at home and desktop PC in class, all of which run Windows natively.

I would prefer the Virtual Machine (VM) on a USB stick but im not sure if its possible to install virtualbox (my VM of choice) on a USB drive. if not then a liveUSB, though correct me if im wrong but would i be able to save files on a liveusb?

If I do go with the VM on the usb stick option, i need an idea what size USB stick to buy so what is the bare minimum space you can run ubuntu on? I also intend to run OpenSUSE which is why i prefer the portable vm option.

Did I do something wrong or is this a bug?
