Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Loses Connection Then Will Not Reconnect?

Mar 24, 2011

I am fairly new to linux. I have Ubuntu 10.10 on my Dell Inspiron E1705. While browsing my internet connection suddenly stops working. It says that I am still connected but the internet doesn't work. When I try to disconnect then reconnect it will not connect to the network. To get it to reconnect i have to turn of the wireless card, delete the connection then restart, turn the card back on and reconnect.

Ubuntu :: Networking - Wireless Loses Its Connection And The Internet Shuts Off

Aug 25, 2010

I have windows 7 dual-booted with ubuntu. Im having issues with ubuntu however and i am very new to using linux (sorry). When i intalled ubuntu and ran on it a seperate partition everything seemed to work fine until i tried connecting to the wireless internet in my university. This is what's driving me crazy. When i first turn ubuntu on it connects normally to the internet, and i can usually get onto google for 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, the wireless loses its connection and the internet shuts off, even though it can still detect the wifi in the area. I try to reconnect but it consistently fails... I also get some sort of .local avashi error message (dont remember what it said exactly) for a brief moment and then it fades away. Can someone tell me what to do? This is driving me crazy. btw, i have a realtek rtl8191 wlan nic driver installed on windows, so im assuming thats the driver installed on linux to. Do i need to install a different version like kubuntu or xubuntu?

Ubuntu Networking :: USB Wifi Adaptor Loses Connection Every Few Minutes

Apr 22, 2011

I just installed the Natty Beta and plugged in a Netgear WG111v3 USB wifi adapter. It is using the RTL8187B driver and worked out of the box. The problem it loses my connection every few minutes. Sometimes not for 10 or 15, sometimes like a minute or less. After it loses the connection, I have to uncheck "enable wireless" (which I assume is the equivalent of bringing down my wireless interface) and then check it again before it will let me reconnect. I don't want to try ndiswrapper because the card works great when it works, including monitor mode and packet injection!

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 Verizon UM150 Mobile Broadband - Loses Connection And Disappears?

May 7, 2010

When using a Verizon UM150 aircard, it is quickly recognized in Ubuntu 10.04. It installs and connects quickly and seamlessly. After anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes it disconnects and then disappears from the network manager. To reconnect I have to exit and reboot into Ubuntu. I suspect that there is a conflicting driver that needs to be blacklisted.

Ubuntu Networking :: Computer Loses Internet Connection And Requires Many Reboots To Re-connect

Sep 5, 2010

I am using Ubuntu Studio 10.04 LTS and I am experiencing the following problem: my computer loses its Internet connection and appears to require several reboots to re-establish an Internet connection.

As suggested on a similar post relating to wireless connection loss, I supply the output of sudo lshw -C network

*-network
description: Ethernet interface
product: NetLink BCM5789 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express
vendor: Broadcom Corporation

[Code].....

Note that I have REMOVED my wireless card in case there was some kind of hardware conflict or failure. I am using a wired connection through a Linksys WRT54G router that is supplying an Internet connection to another computer and an IP phone without any problem.

When I run the command network-admin (or select System > Administration > Network) I can see only 3 tabs (General, DNS and Hosts) It seems that the Connections tab has disappeared (and I believe this happened when I upgraded from Ubuntu 9/Karmic Koala). If I click Help it shows me that there should be 4 tabs, not 3.

The connection dropping began prior to my decision to upgrade. In fact it took several attempts to complete the upgrade. Should I attempt to re-install the upgrade? I am not sure how to do it without losing my connection. When I visit System > Administration > Update Manager, I am informed that my system is up to date.

Networking :: Connection Lost To Gateway?

Oct 8, 2010

recently i have combined 2 machines into 1. after doing this, the ping to the new machine stops, for no apparent reason, and consequently all traffic to/from the machine also stops. when using the two machines individually this never happened.Lastly, if i restart the network, it kills everything (like the network just wont restart - it reaches the last interface and hangs), and if i reboot the machine, it seems to be fine for about 3-4hours.has anyone seen anything like this when connecting a large number of hosts to 1 gateway, using linux as the router?

Fedora Installation :: Eth0 Loses Connection After About 2 Minutes

Mar 1, 2009

I am setting up a fresh Fedora 10 install on an older computer for a roommate and have one odd little problem, everything else appears to be working just fine.

The network connection drops after about 2 minutes (somewhere between 90-120 seconds). This only happens in the installed Fedora 10; it does not happen at all when I boot a Kubuntu LiveCD.

Here's what I know:

The machine is a Dell Dimenision 4500, 2.0 GHz, 512Mb ram.

The ethernet card is 21x4x DEC-Tulip compatible 10/100 Ethernet.

Unplugging the ethernet cord and plugging it back in allows the network interface to come back up, grabs the right IP, but only holds it for another two minutes.

ifconfig and route show all the right info while the connection is good, but inet disappears once it goes down.

'ifdown eth0' and 'ifup eth0' do not bring it back up.

Is this a driver issue perhaps?

General :: Ethernet Dropping Out And Laptop Loses Connection

Oct 24, 2010

I have Vortexbox (fedora distro) installed on a laptop which I am using as a media server. I would have issues where I thought the laptop would go to sleep and disconnect itself from the internet. The computer boots in command line mode and what I would notice is that the screen would go blank and then I would have to go to the computer and jiggle the trackpad and it would wake up. I posted about it and got responses related to the gnome desktop which I could not find the files referred to in the answer.

I tried using setterm to keep the computer awake setting blank to 0 and powersave off. The same thing happens even with the monitor on and the screen display on. A gesture on the trackpad seems to wake the ethernet back up. Here's my old post: [URL]. Everything else about this situation is perfect. Vortexbox is easy to set up and it does everything I want, DLNA, streams to my squeezeboxes, etc, but this ethernet cutting out is exasperating.

Server :: When Cron Is Running, Monit Loses Its Connection To Postfix?

Mar 18, 2011

I've run into a strange problem on one of the servers I maintain. It's running CentOS 5, fully up to date. The server has Monit installed via RPMforge, and runs Postfix as its MTA. Every day at about 4:20am, when cron is running, Monit loses its connection to Postfix. As far as I can tell, nothing is actually going wrong with Postfix and it's always restarted just fine. I run a couple of Debian servers with very similar setups, and the problem does not occur on them.

Perhaps related, other daemons on the CentOS box often lose their pid files at the time when cron runs, which results in Monit thinking they're not running. One service in particular (zarafa-dagent) is so bad for this that I've had to completely disable monitoring of it in Monit. Again, this problem doesn't occur on the Debian boxes I maintain. The problem isn't hugely urgent as everything still runs fine, but it does mean that pretty much every day I get false positive mail alerts from Monit, which is (a) annoying and (b) makes me more likely to miss a real alert.

It works, but after I removed the network manager, by pressing alt+F1,2,3,4 I don't get text terminals, that is I get them, but I don't have the option to login, just a cursor blinking. Sometime I need these terminals so I can kill a process that is crushing GUI, I don't want to do hard resets. Why is that? Is there a better way for having network before GUI than editing /etc/network/interfaces and /etc/resolve.conf?

Ubuntu Networking :: AR5001 Chipset - Wireless Networking Randomly Loses Connectivity And Can Not Regain Connectivity

Jun 25, 2011

Wife's laptop has AR5001 Wireless Adapter laptop model is Toshiba Satellite A215

Problem : Wireless networking randomly loses connectivity and can not regain connectivity, the only apparent solution is a full power down , this is not even certain to work. The card works under Windows, she hates Windows. (I love her for this) I know it's not faulty hardware , because it will work for days on end under Windows without problems.

Things I've tried : madwifi drivers (any and all versions available) : These increase stability of the signal and seem to delay the inevitable however it still happens. When using these drivers the only option is to unload them modprobe -r then reboot then remove them again and re add them. It makes no sense why this works, and if I don't remove them prior to rebooting it will not work.

ATH5K drivers : These are pretty much junk, results are unpredictable at best, sometimes it will work perfectly for a few hours, sometimes it will not work at all. Nothing is repeatable, I can't seem to force whatever condition is causing this. rfkill does not show the wifi being blocked (hard or soft), unblocking it anyway does nothing, only way to make this work and it's iffy is to fully power down wait 5-10 minutes turn it back on and it MAY decide to work.

Firmware update : Updated the Toshiba BIOS to the latest version of the firmware 2.0 no joy here either. Same issue both sets of drivers.

Tried different distros and kernels : I've tried Mint 9, 10 ,11 ; Ubuntu 10.10, 10.04 , 9.10 and 11.04 (which is currently installed) , Fedora and OpenSUSE. All are giving the same problems. I have also tried a slew of different kernels no joy from any of them (I'm not at the computer with the issue now I will post exactly what kernel versions I've used when I have access to the machine).

Another useful bit of information, the hard switch to disable/enable wifi WILL disable it but turning it back on does absolutely nothing. The hotkey does nothing at all. The bios does not have an option to disable or enable the wireless card.

I will also post the typical lsmod , lspci , iwconfig all that good stuff when I get back to the computer in question. I'm probably just going to buy a PC card for it and give up on that one, but this is driving me insane and I would really like to see it resolved even if I do replace the hardware.

Networking :: Cannot Ping Gateway Server Within Windows Networking Environment

Jul 11, 2011

I am trying to get a Linux (Slackware 13.37) working in a Windows networking environment. The IT support for this organisation does not extend to Linux support, so I'm limited in what help I can get for this.

I'm trying to get to the point where I can get to the internet to download what I need on this Linux machine.

The situation is this (*fictitious addresses used) -My Linux machine uses a fixed IP address (10.100.150.21)
My Windows machine uses a DHCP assigned IP address (10.100.150.213)Both Linux and Windows machine are configured to access the gateway server (10.100.150.1)So, I can ping the Linux machine from the Windows machine and vice-versa.I can ping the gateway machine from the Windows machine.I can browse Windows Shares on the network via SMB from the Linux machine.I CANNOT ping the gateway machine from the Linux machine with the Destination Host Unreachable message being the error message.

For actual internet access I need to access a proxy server but since the Linux machine can't even ping the gateway server, it fails to ping the proxy. Now, I have been told the gateway is a HW based router and for Windows machine they use some software for authentication to connect to the network. This software isn't available for Linux, so that's why I've been told to use a fixed IP address. My experience of networking is pretty basic and most of the Linux setup is done via running Slackware's setup program.

Ubuntu Networking :: Trying To Fix Up A Gateway Computer?

Jan 2, 2010

I have a gateway computer that I've been trying to fix up - whenever I try to install Windows XP/2000/Ubuntu, it finds a bunch of errors. I'd really like to get this computer working, it has a 300GB HD, TV inputs, USB ports out the wazoo, and all that other good stuff. Can someone help me with what to do or have a suggestion on what to replace?

I have formatted the hard drive (the Windows installation did it.) The windows installation is to the point where its copying the installation files to the disk, then it gives me an error that it can't find/can't copy the file. The Linux installation just gives me cryptic errors before it even does anything.

I just want to get it to a point where it's usable I really don't care what operating system.

Ubuntu Networking :: Using DSL Gateway As Secondary Router?

Mar 4, 2010

I live on a property with 3 other units and we all share a cable connection. There's a modem connected to a wireless router (I'll call it the "main" router), which until recently I connected to with an 80' or so long ethernet cable because I don't get a good signal, and all I've got is a desktop anyway. When plugged directly into the main router, I can get very fast download speeds - the fastest I've seen over bittorrent, for example, is about 2.2 Mb/s, and it's over 1 Mb/s most of the time for popular torrents or sites with good bandwidth. A friend with a laptop is staying with me for a month, so I wanted to set up a wireless router in my home, and my desktop needed to be moved to a location where running a wire is kind of awkward, so I planned on using the wireless too.

I don't have a spare proper router with an uplink port laying around, but I did have a spare DSL modem/wireless router combo (which I'll call the "secondary" router) that I used to use at a former residence, and I thought I'd try to use it here. I plugged it into my computer, configured its security settings how I wanted (64-bit WEP) and looked through for settings that seemed like they might pertain to using it in this capacity. I didn't really find any except for something that seemed to turn off its DHCP, which I did. Then I unplugged my computer and plugged in the ethernet cable that runs to the main router (which is a normal ethernet cable, not crossover). I found that this setup does "just work" for the most part - our computers see the signal and can log in and access the internet through the main router's cable connection. However:

1. I can't figure out how to access the secondary router's settings once it's been plugged into the main one, even if I unplug it from the main one. What happens is that as soon as I connect the two routers together, it's almost like the secondary ceases to exist independently until it's settings are purged via the reset button. I plug it's IP address into a browser like usual, and nothing happens (it's an Actiontec whose stock one is 192.168.0.1 and the main router is a Netgear with an IP of 192.168.1.1).

I can log into the main one like normal through a wireless connection to the secondary, though. If I look at "attached devices" in the main router's config, it lists all the client computers in the network, but there's no IP that could be for the router (I'm sure of this). Each computer connected through my secondary router gets assigned its own IP like normal, and port forwarding works without a hitch. Again, this persists until the secondary is reset - after the two routers are connected but until the secondary is reset, there doesn't to be a way into the secondary's config. The security settings are acting as they should, though (ie, you need the secondary's WEP key to log on).

2. Internet download speeds when connected to the secondary over wireless are extremely slow compared to what the connection is capable of (can't seem to top 90 Kb/s) but for some reason the max attainable internet upload speed seems to be about the same as normal (around 200 Kb/s). This is puzzling to me. Back when I was using the secondary router for it's intended purpose as a DSL gateway under XP, I downloaded at around 300 Kb/s all the time with it using the same wireless card I am now, so I know the hardware I have is capable of it. Now both of our wireless cards are getting the same mediocre speeds (seemingly bottlenecked at around 90 Kb/s), even with a full signal (ie, the computer right next to the router).

If we connect to the secondary router with a cable rather than wireless, there's no problem and downloads are really fast (note again though that the max upload speed doesn't seem affected whether wired or wireless, as determined by running internet speed tests in both configurations). Ping times over wireless are also extremely high - ie, 800ms+ even when pinging the main router at 192.168.1.1.

It almost seems like there's something inferior or bottlenecked about the wireless signal the secondary router puts out, but I don't know what that could be or how to change it. (I also don't really understand anything about the setup I created here though, other than that I plugged it in and crossed my fingers and it works for basic, non-bandwidth-intense tasks). basically I'm curious whether there's a way to have normal access to the secondary router's settings in this setup, and whether there's a way to make the bandwidth over wireless less mediocre.

Ubuntu Networking :: Gateway Not Gatewaying / Get It To Work?

Feb 27, 2011

This might well be user error, but I can't get my dual homed server to gateway.

There are two NICs code...

It was working, until I was messing around with the patch cables and managed to get them swapped over. I've corrected them now but it no longer seems to pass packets between interfaces. I noticed because squid (transparently proxying) stopped working, other stuff on the box (postfix, dovecot, getmail, dnsmasq) is working fine, the internal NIC is visible from the internal network, the external NIC can access the 'net.

I've rebooted (more than once) but the problem persists, any network gurus spot anything obviously wrong?

Networking :: Ubuntu 10.04 - 2 Interfaces Same Gateway Setting

Aug 4, 2010

I recently upgraded an Ubuntu 8.04 server to 10.04 server. My previous configuration had two network interfaces both routed to the same LAN with the same gateway. This functioned for me so as to support different services on each interface, such as http and smb on one, torrents on another. This routed fine in 8.04 (routing table below). Once I upgraded to 10.04, any packets that traveled beyond the LAN did not return. I checked and there is no local firewall running. Thinking that this was strange I set up a virtual machine and tested it in a different environment at work (and also with a virtual firewall configuration) with the same results.

I also tested several other current operating systems, including Debian 5.04 and Open Solaris 9, all of which routed two interfaces with the same gateway fine. I rolled back from 10.04 to 9.10 and the problem persists, so the change exits also between 8.04 and 9.10. at least identify what is unique to Unbuntu 9.10 and above that is preventing having two interfaces with the same gateway, something that other operating systems do not seem to have trouble with?
