I upgraded to 11.04, and I like the Unity interface. But every time I logout and back in (or restart) it starts in Classic mode.
- If I go to Compiz, it shows that Unity is enabled.
- When I login, it shows that the Unity interface is selected.
- If I run

in the terminal Unity will run, but then if I close the terminal, it will (sometimes)shut Unity back down.
So I have Ubuntu Lucid machines about 20 of them. Configured via ldap authentication. I seem to be running into a rather strange logout problem. Whenever users click logout they're logged out, however after that all i get is the background screen with the cursor. The cursor is able to move, but no login screen.If i go to a terminal window alt+f1 and do a service gdm restart, then the login screen goes back to normal.
View 3 Replies View RelatedHow can I logout of the 11.04 cd (32 bit intel version) when it starts up in Unity? I'm looking to solve some issues by checking out 11.04 and unity just slows me down. When I boot up the cd, sometimes I get stuck in unity, sometimes it starts up in gnome. This seems to be a random timing issue related to troubles with my particular graphics adapter. Anyway, that's what I trying to resolve and unity just gets in the way.
The problem is when in unity, I can't find any way to logout, it's not in the shutdown menu. I need to logout and in to change my desktop from unity to classic. So, where's the logout in the cd trial version of unity?
I installed the files from ppa:canonical-dx-team/une and installed Unity. Now, when I run Unity on my desktop and move my cursor on it, it disappears! Here is what I see in Terminal: [URL]

I tried to remove libqt4-phonon, but it would also remove half of the system, which isn't the best idea. I have installed NoMachine NxClient deb, on Ubuntu 11.04, Nx installed and I connected to my uni server fine. The Nx program was originally in the applications drop down menu in "others". After a restart Nx was no longer in the menu, I dl'd again and found in Ubuntu software center that there was an option to reinstall NXClient, so I reinstalled and the icons appeared in applications/internet. After a restart they(the NX icons) disappeared again.No other programs have disappeared from the app menu like that.edit: after finding edit menu, I noticed nx client (show) was not "ticked" in internet selection. after a reboot the icon is now available in the app/internet menu.Previous to this I found what I thought was the application in shell $/usr/NX/bin/nxclientbut it would not run from shell command.I added to the panel, created an application launcher for /usr/NX/bin/nxclient and it works there, too.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Lucid installation which I've imaged and pushed to several computers on the network at my office. The system authenticates network users with Active Directory using Kerberos, and mounts NFS shares from a Lucid server downstairs using pam_mount. It all works quite smoothly most of the time, but I get desktop icons in Gnome only on the first login. If I log out, then log in as a different user (local or network, it doesn't matter), the desktop icons are all gone. Everything else looks normal, and I can open a Nautilus window and view any location on the hard drive just as expected. If I use the run dialog or a terminal window to executekillall nautilus the icons are restored. This works whether any instance of a file browser window is open or not.
I have noticed similar, but far less consistent, behavior with gnome-panel. Every once in a while the panels will fail to appear when I log in, but I can restore them withkillall gnome-panel When I run either command, everything works fine until the next login. If I reboot the machine, I get everything back again for one login. Then the desktop icons will disappear, and I have to kill Nautilus and let it restart in order to get them back. I expect I'm missing something important here, but I don't know where to look next.
I have a primary language, Italian, and I want also use a secondary language, English. I want to switch language in order to have all the writings and messages in English not to write special characters by keyboard. I switched language in both kde system settings>Regional & language and in yast system>language leaving the keyboard layout Italian, but in the kde menu (the lizard on the left of panel) the groups of applications (multimedia, giochi, sistema) are in Italian and yast too (impostazioni amministratore), instead others are in English.
1)is this a bug or I forgot something?
2)which is the differences switching languages by yast and by kde system settings?
3)Is it possible to switch language and don't restart or logout the system?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with samba machine disappearing after I restart smb or the server where samba is running. Lets say I name my samba server ABC and set it up via system-config-samba utils. I follow basic steps and fill out everything according to most guides that are available for fedora. After that everything works great, I can connect to samba server ABC form any machine through smb://ABC (mac) or \ABC (win), however as soon as I restart smb services or my server (subsequently restarting the smb service ...) I no longer can connect to it via samba server name ABC, I can only do smb://SambaServerIP or \SambaServerIP (have to put numerical internal ip to connect)
My smb.conf:

I am running Fedora 12 with KDE on an Acer Aspire One netbook.
A recent update has caused the KDE shutdown/restart/logout buttons (found for example through the Fedora -> Leave menu or by pressing the power off switch)to stop working. I am having to shutdown using shutdown -P now command.
So I have the following questions:
a) Has anyone else had this issue and knows a workaround/fix?
b) Does anyone know what package these belong to so I can try an older version?
c) Does anyone know where this package writes its logs, or if I need to install anything for it to do so so I can have a look?
d) Does anyone know the command-line interface to these commands - that may give me either a more gentle workaround than shutdown -P now, or some insight into why the command is no longer working.
I like everyone else posing in this forum am trying to reconcile with 11.04. Everytime I adjust a setting in the CompizConfig Settings Manager, the top unity bar wigs out and disappears, it is still clickable but its invisible. Is there any simple fix to this? I don't think it's my hardware because other people are getting this too. I really don't like restarting/logging off my computer everytime I make a compiz change.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen trying to "Leave" the system (either via the small button on the lower right of the taskbar or by right clicking on the Desktop and selecting "Leave") the logout / shutdown / restart screen comes up. I have the "Logout" desktop effect activated, which is supposed to desaturated the background when the Leave screen appears. However, instead of simply greying out the background, the image on the desktop and the rest of the screen also gets slightly distorted, with seemingly random distortion effects cropping up all over the place (e.g. horizontal lines or large blurs).
These distortions are different every time the Leave screen comes up. The Leave screen itself is displayed fine, and apart from the dodgy background I have no other issues with the whole process (the system shuts down or restarts properly according to my choice). I am using the Radeon drivers, and all other desktop effects I have on (Magic lamb, cover switch, present windows, etc) work fine and without a hitch. It's only the Logout effect that seems to glitch. Are the distortions intentionally created by the effect in order to emphasize the focus on the Leave screen?
I have lost my ability in KDE Menus to do a shutdown or restart. My only option is to logoff or cancel. This started occurring about 2 weeks ago, possibly 2 KDE workspace updates ago. I have been assuming it would get fixed with an update but so far it has not.
I am running Fedora 10 x86_64, kernel = 2.6.27.7-134.fc10.x86_64, and the KDE version is:

I have 3 different systems all running the same OS and KDE versions and it is happening on all 3 systems. All systems have the "Offer Shutdown Options" selected in Session Manager. I have even turned this option off, rebooted, and then back on to try to jumpstart it but that did not work.
Additionally, I have tried deleting the contents of the /tmp directory while in single-user mode and also the .kde under my home directory. This made no difference.
Another symptom I am noticing is that any desktop widgets that I create all get moved to the upper left-hand corner of the display whenever I reboot and log back in. Any extra shortcut widgets that I add to the panel are also gone the next time I log in.
Again, these same symptoms are occurring on 3 different machines.
These symptom do not occur after a fresh install of FC 10. It is breaking during one of the yum updates but I have not narrowed it down yet as to which update is causing this to happen.
I upgraded to Natty at the beginning of May and Unity has been working fine until about 4 days ago. Around then, then I cold boot and log in, Ubuntu starts in "Ubuntu Classic" desktop. If I log out then back in, Unity starts as expected.In both cases of my logging in, Ubuntu Classic is not selected - Ubuntu is, which should start the UI under Unity.

I get to my location and power-up, I now can't see the Unity interface, but it's kind of there.I've tried to reboot the laptop, power off and back up, etc. I'm not really sure what would have cause this or where to even look at this point.You can see at the very left that the arrow is there and at the top that the bar is kind of there, but not really. ><

View 1 Replies View RelatedEvery time I load unity - either by rebooting, logging out/in, or just "unity --replace" all my self-placed launchers are gone (just chrome, terminal and a custom launcher for my email) and the LibreOffice ones are back.
I'm assuming this isn't a bug, as here and launchpad would have tonnes of reports of something so obvious if it were affecting everyone, but something local to me.
I am using the Ubuntu 11.04 and also windows 7 in my system. So when i opened the D drive which is NTFS file system in Ubuntu it creates a shortcut is the launcher. I absolutely loved the previous interface, and was quite shocked and saddened to see it disappear. But I'd like to keep all the other new software that comes with 10.10. So my question is, can I install the old 10.04 beautiful interface to run on the 10.10 edition? Re-installation is a MS solution, that turned me on to linux in the first place!

What happen now is that when I resize a windows to be on all screen, I seen big thick black line where the unity launcher is suppose to be. When I move the mouse toward the left side I see again the unity launcher.
Is there anyway to restart compize to default setting. Or at least how can I set it back that I wont see that ugly line.
