Just upgraded from maverick to natty
and i am now using Unity 2D, although i have Nvidia drivers installed.
my question (please excuse my stupidity); how can i un-maximise my windows?
i mean i have openned Eclipse IDE into full window (maximised) but do i make it back as a floating window?
I am using eiskaltdc in Ubuntu 11.04. Its working very fine. But after I clicked on the "cross" button its gone. Normally in 10.10 there was a small icon in the bar for that eiskaltdc, but in the new Unity its not there. I checked the system monitor and it shows eiskaltdc. Any idea how to maximize it?When I logged in with Ubuntu Classic GNOME desktop I was able to find the minimized window. But in Unity its totally hidden .

Sometimes when I start up linux the buttons to close, maximize, and minimize windows and the Application title bar disappear. Restarting usually fixes the problem.
Do you have any ideas why this would happen? Is there a command that will restart gnome without having to restart the computer?
I just switched to OpenSUSE/KDE4 from Ubuntu/Gnome2. Overall, I am very pleased. However, I have an issue that I have been unable to resolve. That is, Firefox, Thunderbird and Konsole Terminal do not have maximize buttons in their titlebars and there is not any other way to maximize these windows. Also, if I right click on the task manager tab for those applications then the "Maximize" menu item in the context menu is grayed out so it is inaccessible too. The bottom line is that there is no way to maximize these windows. All other applications, such as Dolphin, Chromium, Konqurer, LibreOffice, etc. have maximize buttons and a "maximize" menu item in their task manager context menus. Then, why don't Firefox, Thunderbird and Konsole also have maximize buttons? I am using the Oxygen theme and have configured the buttons on the Oxygen theme to include the Maximize button.
View 1 Replies View RelatedUsing gnome I love the desktop effects, except the 'maximize window' effect. There is an annoying delay when I maximize a window. Is there a way to turn this particular effect off, while leaving all the others on. I looked in control center>desktop effects, but the option is not there. The only way I could turn off the maximize effect was unchecking the "enable desktop effects" checkbox. But this turns all effects off. All other effects run smooth and snappy.

I tried installing Compiz, but it failed so I uninstalled it along with Unity and reinstalled them both. What I am looking at now is a panel-less desktop with only my background and 2 files on my desktop. Also, when I bring up the Change Desktop Background, it has no top bar consisting of the X Minimize or maximize buttons.

This is not the case, as can be seen in this screenshot. Any idea what this could be caused by? It's sporadic when it shows up, but when it happens it does it until I reboot.

View 4 Replies View RelatedStarting and application or opening new windows on my machine takes two hands. Once hand with the mouse and one with the alt-key, before I can have normal control over the window. In normal control, I mean the ability to move, minimize and exit the window. That's because every time I start a new application or open a new application window it opens to the top left of the screen.The title bar of the window is buried below Unity's top menu bar. That means I can't grab the window by the title bar to move it or minimize it. I have to hold down the alt-key then grab with the mouse to position the window in a location where I can properly view it (closer to the center of the monitor on my right).I might be missing something if there is an option I can set so the new window locations can remember the position and size from last closed.This is very annoying, whereas I open and lost lots of windows during the course of working. Even browsing this forum, I click on the new posts option and right click on topics from the list to read from a new window. After finishing with that topic I close the window. Often I might open up two or three windows in that topic to type replies or review references mentioned in that topic. Then I close all the windows and open up a new window with the next topic of interest.
It's bad enough that the OS doesn't remember the preferred size and position of the window. But if it were possible to just drive and the window to the position and resist only using the mouse, it would be great, since my hand is already on the mouse. But because the title menu is buried under Unity's Top Menu, I have to hold down the alt-key with my left hand while dragging the mouse with my right hand.If no one has a fix or suggestion and this is affecting everyone, I guess it'll be off to the bug/feature forum to inform the developers of the problem.
I recently installed Ubuntu desktop, since I had been running my server as Ubuntu Server on a guest OS on Windows 7 and never really used the Windows part of the computer. Since then, I've been unable to use the mouse in a graphical environment for longer than a few minutes without it starting to act crazy. The mouse moves around normally, but won't respond to clicks (left, middle, or right) but the keyboard shortcuts still work. I'm not sure if things have changed since I last used Gnome though, but Alt+Tab is not working for me either when this happens. Sometimes, the active window is even behind another window, and isn't pulled to the foreground.
After a bit of frustrated clicking and jamming of buttons on the keyboard, sometimes the mouse kind of starts working because I'll notice a right click menu open. But, I am still unable to move windows or click on them to bring them to the foreground, and my mouse presses only work on the current window. And then, eventually, after about a minute or so, it'll stop respond again too.
I saw in one thread that someone had dead spaces where he couldn't click, so he installed and ran Gnome and that fixed it, but I tried using Ubuntu Classic and it is still giving me the same behavior. I'm actually posting this message now in links, because I can't use Firefox or Chrome well enough when it's hidden behind other windows.

When working in an XP VirtualBox I can't use Alt-Tab to switch to my Linux Apps as VirtualBox captures the keys for Windows. So I tended to make a lot of use on the Application list on the old System Tray/Taskbar. I could click on the application's entry in the taskbar and that application would come up. When I needed to return to the Windows App, I clicked again and the application would then minimise so I can see the Windows app. Also I have been using the SUPER button in conjunction with 'E' to raise the Home Directory (just to keep it consistent with Windows).

I want to have 2 installs of Ubuntu11.04, that way I can have Unity AND Gnome 3. Is there a way I can partition it so they share the home and swap partitions? (2. / partitions, 1 /home and 1 swap) How would I do that?
I will also need 2 partitions for Windows 7 which I use for work. (No, I do not want to use VirtualBox) My Windows 7 cd creates a second system reserve partition. I don't know if this will make me run out of partitions. I hear you can only have a max of 4. My idea above has 4 partitions for Ubuntu alone.
1. I didn't like the icon theme and changed it to Ubuntu Mono Light. But is there a way to get the Min/Max/Close buttons to how they are in Radiance when maximized, or is that dependant on something else?
2. Is there a way to disable the Unity dock, but not the Unity feature where the Min/Max/Close go into the command bar?
Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.
I want to maximize across both of my screens. I am currently running twinview with lucid lynx. The previous build of Ubuntu let me maximize across both of my screens, but now when I maximize i just goes to one screen.
I tried doing a google search to see if I can figure it out and to my surprise the only thing I could find is people complaining because the maximize would go to both screens and not one.
I have Kubuntu running as a virtual machine, with Ubuntu 10.10 as the host. When I maximize it, it only takes up a small part of the screen. This is really annoying, especially when looking at large programs that are too wide.
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust upgraded to 11.04 and this drives me nuts. When an app/window is opened, if it is "sufficiently" large, it maximizes. I use eclipse. Eclipse is a screen-space hog, however I still need to be able to see other windows and the application bar around the edge of the eclipse window. Unfortunatly Unity(?) is fighting me on this set up because every time i relaunch eclipse, it becomes maximized even if I, the user, have explicitly un-maximized it.
How can I disable this auto-maximize behavior.
