the problems is exactly the one in the title. I was trying to tweak my screen resolution but when i clicked on "monitor" the computer froze. No response from keyboard or other buttons. my machine is a (don't laugh!) hp pavilion zd8369ea.
View 2 RepliesI just installed Ubuntu 9.10 and at the login screen, if I click anywhere on the screen, the entire system freezes. I can't open up the terminal or anything at this point, I have to restart the computer.
This also happens when I use the live CD.
I've done apt-get update, dist-upgrade... no change. Not to mention, I can't get into xorg anymore to change the video driver to VESA (it's always had trouble in previous versions without the restricted nvidia drivers)
Upgraded laptop to 11.04 last night, and it worked great. Unity was pretty good. But upgraded my dual-monitor desktop earlier today, and realized the laptop's single screen of limited resolution was the reason it was working well.
On my desktop, Unity is giving me headaches. First, after upgrade, it appeared on the left-edge of the right monitor (IE, it was centered across the width of the screens). Managed to change my primary screen via instructions on [URL] and now it's more sensibly on the left edge of left screen.
Trouble is, now, I've got 3000-odd pixels between edges. Previously I had a dock along the bottom, and Compiz Scale and Gnome-Do summoned on the screen I was working on. Now everything seems to be so focused on the left screen that the utility of the right screen is severely limited.
What I'm hoping to learn is
1) Is it possible to put the Unity menu along the bottom of a given screen rather than left of a given screen? (Mac/Windows/KDE-style docks)
2) Is it possible to have 2 unity menus, one on left-side-of-left and the other on right-side-of-right?
3) Any other strategies for working with multiple monitors in Unity?
Not really interested in being the Luddite sticking with Ubuntu Classic if it can be helped. Really like global menus (and mirrored global menus at that! Better than OSX) and the repeated indicators on both screens is really useful. Much rather get Unity working well than jumping ship.
Firefox 3.6.8 is freezing whenever I click a menu item. It locks up for about 25 seconds before continuing. It does this even in safe mode, or if all the addons and extentions are disabled. I have even tried deleting and creating a new profile. Chrome works fine. Also, on another login account, firefox is working fine!

I downloaded the latest version of Ubuntu Netbook and followed the proper directions to create an installation USB. During installation, I got up to the step where it tells me to have: atleast 2.5GB available, make sure power cord is plugged in, and that I am connected to the internet. When I click on, "Forward" to continue the installation, it just hang/freezes.
I have similar problem when trying to install JoliCloud. When installing JoliCloud, I get up to step 3, where it asks about the keyboard. When I click "Forward", it doesn't do anything, it just hangs. I tired using multiple different USB drive, and also downloaded ISO file again to ensure the file wasn't corrupted.*

Symptoms: When I click on something, say Evolution or Empathy or Maps, about 1 in 5 times the screen will freeze and I have to switch the computer off and on again.
I had this problem with Wheezy and could not resolve it. In the past week I have installed Jessie 32bit and then Jessie 64bit and I get the same problem.
On downloading my copies of Jessie I have verified the md5 and sha.
So the first couple of days using Unity with my dual monitors went fine. Today I plugged in my laptop to the second monitor, and while the top bar and the side menu are being displayed, all the desktop icons, background, and actual program windows are black. Basically I just have the menu bar and the launcher. The windows are still there when I unplug the second monitor.

1 server with centos 5.4 running 1 client with centos 5.4 - gnome running thin ethernet network
on my client desktop i have a link to a shared folder on the server. this works fine.
to the problem: after working with this (using the link and seeing it working) i shutted down the server from my client (in a terminal screen, using ssh) the terminal screen signalled the server going down and the connection ended. the linked folder on the client desktop changed its icon fine.
after that i clicked on the changed icon (of the link that was not a working link any more) and the client machine froze.... no reaction any more. i could only end the session by >ctrl-alt-f#< , log in and shutdown.
Q: is it normal Centos is that angry when you click such a link?
I am using Ubuntu 11.04 - the Natty Narwhal 64-bit and I am using the Nvidia Xserver version 173.14.30 and it never has any problems when I am in single monitor mode but when I turn on twinview mode like this----
and click apply the new monitor first shows up black and when I move my mouse over the monitor stuff starts showing up and I am able to click ok to keep my settings
when I click ok the screens freeze. everything else works; I can move the mouse around and if I am playing music it still plays but if I click on any button nothing happens and nothing happens when I use the keyboard either. I would really like to be able to use both my monitors
Since i've touched the "set back to defaults" (or the like) in compiz configuration manager (CCSM), unity does not appear after logging in. I'm stuck with a complete blank screen, with my wallpaper and an mouse pointer. I have attempted the following:
- restore unity by the steps in askubuntu.com: unity --reset
- reinstalled unity packages
- created another account, to see if the user configuration was the problem
Another hint:
- Ubuntu classic with effects shows my screens outside of the viewport and i'm unable to use them
- Ubuntu classic without effects operates properly

So I finally managed to install a copy of Natty on my old laptop, but when I logged in, the desktop was frozen. I could move my mouse, but I couldn't click anything. I didn't know if it had to do with packages not being up to date or something (though I doubt it is) so I ran sudo apt-get update, and then tried to run sudo apt-get upgrade, but I got an error saying "E: Unable to locate package upgrade". Apparently I'm not the first to have this problem. I found a similar question asked at [URL]... login. However, there was no answer. I thought that maybe an Ubuntu-specific forum would have an answer.

View 2 Replies View Relatedif i click on System or Trash, from the unity launcher, it open movie player. only the player and not either of those places. when clicking Trash, the player opens and starts playing "4 non-blonds", which was probably the last thing sent to the trash. clicking System just opens the movie player not playing anything specific. why is this happening? why cant we access those places. The laptop uses a widescreen monitor but my external is a 4x3; I wonder if this is causing problems. Of course, it may just be the Intel 82801G graphics adapter.et things up properly in the Display Preferences config window (I'm using Gnome, btw) but when I hit apply, the system locks and I have to hard boot. I've never set up a linux box with multiple monitors before, let alone multiple monitors that require different resolutions.

Screen resolution is now only 800x600 which fills only 3/4 of available screen space and there are no greater options in System Preferences Monitors. It is also operating rather slower than the previous OS, maybe these two issues are connected? I have checked Administration for any required Proprietary Drivers. There is just one for a modem which is activated. During installation I aborted it then closed down and restarted, which may have affected the process?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI got 11.04 installed on my laptop a few weeks ago and all seemed well. I've only used this machine for general surfing and downloads (legal of course )Anyway, last night it started to display some odd or should I say, show stopping issues.
Issue 1. Clicking the Home Folder button at the top of the left launcher does nothing. Well when I say nothing is does dim the icon, the hard drive turns but no folder opens. OS function 101 failure.
Issue 2. Inserting a USB stick (that just last week we working fine) does nothing. Again, when I say nothing, the harddrive light goes on, but the USB drive does not open.
Issue 3. Unable to get my home folder open in the Ubuntu 11.04 Unity system I downloaded Sunflower, a file browser app. It runs fine from the command line, but when the I decided to make a shortcut to this on the desktop, I right clicked on the desktop in order to use the Create Launcher option. But guess what? The right click does not reveal any menu. Right clicking on the desktop does nothing.
This is not good enough for what is suppose to be a mature stable OS!I really do not want to go to Fedora 15 or <shudder> Windows 7 so, how do I fix this broken system? Is there some system repair that reinstalls the OS or something? Is there a system repair that does not require me getting all the updates again?
I've trouble with booting up xubuntu koala:
When switching to the x11-login, the computer freezes during the change of the screen-resolution. Even switching to a console (ctrl+alt+F1/F2/F3...), ctrl+alt+del or pushing the power-button is not possible. After switching off the PC manually, it won't boot at all and freezes directly after switching on again (at bios-time).
Turning the PC off and on again helps - everything is okay afterwards. This doesn't happen always but it is annoying. Sometimes I have to try this procedure 5 o6 times until I can use the computer. Which of the thousand of log-files is the right one to look in? I am using Xubuntu and a Ati Radeon Xpress Graphics card, along with an AMD64 and the 64-Bit-Version of Xubuntu.
Ever since I made the switch to Ubuntu I have had a problem getting back to the X Windows environment from Virtual Terminals. Control+Alt+F1~6 work fine but when I try Control+Alt+F7 my screen freezes.
I have been trying to find a solution to this problem but it doesn't seem to be affecting many other users. Not sure if it matters, but I'm running 64-bit Lucid Lynx.
I'm now on 11.04 (64 bit on a desktop), but had the problem on 10 as well. I get the occasional complete system freeze. There is nothing in the logs indicating a problem and it is not the graphics card, as I cannot ssh in from another machine. It sometimes happens after three days of running and sometimes after 20 hours.

Booting into recovery mode loads the tools menu then freezes before I select anything. The system still boots and runs windows 7 from the same hard disk just fine. I've booted a live cd and run file system check on my ext4 partition and it says it's clean. I can mount the volumes and read the data, just can't get the os to boot.Any suggestions before I backup and reformat?

My machine will hard freeze about once a day when using firefox. The whole OS -- no mouse movement, no keyboard response, etc.I've switched to Chrome for weeks and I get no issues at all. I switched back to firefox and it hard froze within the first hour or so. I know it's unusual that an individual program would freeze the whole OS rather than just crash, but it seems to be a fairly consistent pattern.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently re-installed ubuntu to fix my freezing problem, but with no success. disc has no errors. I cleaned the disc and the cd drive, the cd burner has a problem installing while the dvd drive does fine. The computer is a HP Visualize X-class workstation with dual 1000mhz pentium 3s, 2 gigs ecc ram and a ATI AllinWonder 9700 pro @ 2x agp(wish was higher), on-board sound. So my problems are:
1) It randomly freezes within 24 hours regardless of who is logged in or if effects are on or what the load is. mouse is frozen too, completely unresponsive even ctrl alt f1.
2) My sound is screwy. its supported by alsa but i have to play with the volume to get sound and lots of times there are audio errors, it sounds like its robo-trippin. I have tried the sound guide.
3) Desktop effects only work with the user that logs in first. If I try to activate them when I switch users it searches for drivers then says it cant be enabled. not a priority.
Window xp works okay but the graphics drivers are giving me problems so i decide to do a dual boot.
I think I am going to put in a different video card. maybe its not all there, it got hot once when the fan died, put in a replacement and it worked but i see lines moving down the screen when there are blacks.
After successfully upgrading from 8.04 to 8.1 (where even my wireless worked for the first time) I got a system freeze when I tried to upgrade to 9.04.
I suspect the graphics driver but don't know how to upgrade without X running. After booting in generic mode (kernel 2.6.28-1 I can log in the shell but am lost without the GUI.
Don't know if this is a coincidence, but the other day we had a power cut and my laptop went off. When I tried to reboot it got to the ubuntu start up screen, but when it tries to get to the "desk top" screen it all goes blue and black flashes. I have XP and Vista on the same machine and these both start up ok
