Ubuntu :: Uninstalling An Application Installed With A .sh File?

Jun 29, 2011

I am having trouble installing mathematica 8 and found this workaround: [URl]..The workaround involves uninstalling Mathematica then installing in a specific way. However I seem to be unable to properly uninstall the program because even after I delete the directories /usr/local/Wolfram and /.Mathematica, after I reinstall, Mathematica is already activated. The activation data must be located somewhere that I haven't removed.

Is there a general way to remove all trace of a program installed by a .sh file? Alternatively, are there any common locations I could look for this data? I don't really understand the meaning of all the 3-letter directories like "usr" and "etc", where these things seem to be installed. I am running Ubuntu 10.10, if that's relevant.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 - Cannot Find Newly Installed Application

I am a beginner Ubuntu 9.10 user. I downloaded and installed the latest version of the sun VirtualBox. My problem is I cannot find where it is installed and that's why I could not run it. Generally, when I install a program the shortcut appears in the menu "Applications->ClassOfInstalledFile". But Virtual Box did not appear. How to find the icon, or simply how to run this application and have a shortcut of it on the "Applications" menu?

Software :: Source Code For Application Installed Thru Apt-Get

Dec 18, 2008

I have installed some applications thru 'apt-get' command. I found that it is much different with Windows where normally the installed program is in one folder while in Ubuntu, the program will located in many folders. I wonder whether I can get the full source code for the application I have installed thru 'apt-get'? Where to locate them?

This is because I have faced problem in using the Kphone installed thru 'apt-get' and installed thru compilation of source code from tarball. I get quite bad voice quality when I called using Kphone SI 'sudo make install' from the source tarball downloaded from sourceforge.net. However, good voice quality is obtained when I used Kphone installed thru 'sudo apt-get' command. Is that the source code different or is that because of Kphone is differs with Kphone SI?

Programming :: Launching Application With Compiled .so Files Instead Of Installed Ones?

Dec 12, 2010

I am debugging a project and I noticed the .so files from my installed version of this project are being used when I run the main executable. However what I want is that the modified and compiled libraries (.so files) are being used. This is for testing the software. So I don't want to install these. I tried adding the directory with the .so files in /etc/ld.so.conf and doing ldconfig. However that did not seem to work. How can I let the main executable use the modified .so? I also want to debug this using gdb, so if someone knows what I should do to get those modified .so files being used for execution.

Ubuntu :: Web Based File Transfer Application?

Mar 26, 2010

I am looking for a little help finding an appropriate application. Basically I am looking for something like a web based FTP client that runs on the file server (I use the term loosely) I have. Basically I want to be able to open a web browser on a different computer in my internal network, punch in hostnameort and get a web page that I can use to move files between the computer.

I don't care if it uses FTP or not. I basically just want the specific functionality. I have vsftp installed on my 'server' already.I have looked at Gollem, but I am unsure if that is the correct application for me to use. If you have used it any opinions would be great.I know this is probably not the most secure way to do things, but it is only for my internal network and kind of an experiment for me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ubuntu :: Select An Application To Open A (specific) File?

Mar 16, 2011

I have this problem, that I want a specific .exe file to open in Mono, but all other .exe files to open in Wine.

However, the only option there is, are 'Select an application to open XXXX.exe and other files of type "DOS/Windows executable"'

but I just want to open THIS .exe file in mono, and the rest in WINE.

I have been in similar situations before, in that I opened a folder containing music with VLC, and it worked fine, but after that, it assumed that I wanted to open all folders in VLC.

I assume that there must be an option for this, and I can not see why it ain't an option by default.

(I'm using Ubuntu 10.10)

Ubuntu :: Getting To The Bottom Of Application Defaults File Associations

May 13, 2011

On Ubuntu 11.04, I have a need to use gnome-open from another application to open files in assigned applications. I think I understand how mime types are given in /usr/share/mime. I understand how default application associations are done in /usr/share/gnome/applications/defaults.list. I understand how update-desktop-database is used to maintain defaults.list. I know how to specify file associations (open with) from Nautilus. I understand how ~/.local/share/applications and ~/.local/share/mime override the system settings. I get all that.

What I don't understand is why the command gnome-open or double-clicking a file in nautilus, for certain file types (e.g. PDF), generates an error message:

Quote:

Could not display "<whatever file>". The location is not a folder.

The occurrences of application/pdf in the different applicable files all point to evince as the associated application.

By the way, mimeopen does work. What is the relationship between mimeopen and gnome-open? Manual pages for these commands are not helpful in understanding their operation.

In addition, I might throw in one other question. In the various .desktop files, I see that some application commands are enclosed in single quotes, but never the file name identifier, %f. If dealing with file/directory names with spaces in them, it would seem that quoting the '%f' would be important.
