Ubuntu :: Select An Application To Open A (specific) File?
Mar 16, 2011
I have this problem, that I want a specific .exe file to open in Mono, but all other .exe files to open in Wine.
However, the only option there is, are 'Select an application to open XXXX.exe and other files of type "DOS/Windows executable"'
but I just want to open THIS .exe file in mono, and the rest in WINE.
I have been in similar situations before, in that I opened a folder containing music with VLC, and it worked fine, but after that, it assumed that I wanted to open all folders in VLC.
I assume that there must be an option for this, and I can not see why it ain't an option by default.
How do tell an application to open in a specific workspace?
More info:
I like to have my C++ IDE in workspace 2, my Java IDE in workspace 3, and my email, browser and miscellaneous in workspace four. I also use a shell script that executes upon log in code...
Of course currently it all opens in the current workspace... Is there a way for me to specify which workspace each command should start in?
I have an application for loading data into MySQL table using php, through excel-Reader. php is set up on the localhost and the web-page is available from: [url]
The code of xlr2.php:
When I open the page, I get the message to choose a file with the file-dialog box and the notice as:
Notice: Undefined index: action in /var/www/html/xlr/xlr2.php on line 10
Default Action:
Choose a file to Load into MySQL:
Why so? I am selecting file from ("/home/lx/myDocuments/tech/excel/smslist.xls"), but the warning says that [failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /var/www/html/xlr/xlr2.php on line 33]. A different directory than I selected.
so that: *.odb files are opened by default with libreoffice base *.org files (just org files not plain text files) are opened by default with emacs
For some reason I can not figure out how to proceed.
As far as I know - i.e. for what I have been reading in the documentation - the default application for a given MIME-type is specified by writing into the group [Default Applications] in the mimeapps.list file
Last weekend i have increased the open file size (ulimit -n) for the application user id i have update the limits.conf file with necessary inputs restarted the service and the server as well, when i check the ulimit value for the specific user by switching user from other user it shows the new value (10240) but if i login directly using the application id the ulimit value shows as 1024 which one is the default one.
I have installed Gantt Project (project management application) under 10.04. The system identifies the .gan files produced by the program as xml files. How do I tell the system to open .gan files with the GanttProject application?
I tried right click on the file to open and using "Open with other application" but the GanttProject application does not appear to be in the list of available programs.
I know this is possible in GUI gnome. But is it possible to do it too in shell command? Let say if i type this in shell:
#file.txt
then it will open gnome-editor in nautilus which open file.txt. gnome is the desktop manager. nautilus is the explorer windows in gnome. gnome-editor is one like notepad in MS windows.
I am using ubuntu 10.04 and opensuse 11.3. I would like to know how to assign each application to a specific worksapce. For example, when I open a pdf file, it will be moved to workspace2. When I open a movie, it will be moved to workspace3. In Leopard, "Space" have such features. I would like to know the way to achieve this in ubuntu and opensuse, in an easy way, meaning that just need to install a small package, not a big one , like compiz
I just changed my windows to Ubuntu. Now I need to install software for my SLR camera, I tried to do an search on but end in vain. How can i use the sony software on my system.
I have a laptop running Ubuntu hooked up to a TV via a VGA to S-Video converter with the VGA-out through an external monitor, and I am trying to find a way to set vlc or mplayer to open fullscreen in the external monitor by default. Eventually I want to be able to hit enter on a video file and have it play on the TV without any dragging to the external monitor. I have googled around a bit, checked the monitor settings options, and looked through the media player options but so far can't find anything.
I want to know, how to allow to a specific user to run an application (for example Virtual Machine Manager) without entering a password? I have tried to add this user into appropriate groups, but it didn't helped.
how can you set specific application's data to always reside in ram, so it runs and launches super fast all the time?
i recall reading about how you could put all your libs folders into ramfs once, but it took up a lot of ram, so i never bothered, and it was really just for faster (instant) launching times.
i just want to be able to set that for specific things, like for example, the GIMP and Inkscape.
I currently have my desktop setup with two displays, one of them being my living room tv that I run Boxee on. My problem is that all the audio runs through the same speakers preventing me from listening to music or gaming at the same time as when Boxee is in use.
I would like to know if it's possible to split the audio so that an application of my choosing only outputs sound through my headphones. I was thinking it would be possible with some of the controls in pulse, but if it is I cannot figure it out.
How can I force a Wine application (or Wine itself) to use a specific network interface? I have installed hamachi and am trying to play starcraft over virtual LAN. However, when I run Starcraft with hamachi running, it does not work. I have now determined that hamachi creates a network interface called "ham0". How do I force Wine/Starcraft to use the "ham0" network connection? I have looked into forcebindip but it crashes on wine.

I want to remap my keys for a game I'm playing, for example WASD instead of arrows to walk, r, f, c to act like f1, f2, f3 and so on. I'm aware of xmodmap, but I want to do this just for one application and be able to use hotkey to toggle between this script and default setting. I've been trying to use AutoKey, but I cannot force it to work just for specific app. On windows solution is AutoHotKey, but it won't work through wine.
I have two sound cards in my computer. OpenSuSE 11.3 recognizes them both without a problem, and I can play sound through each of them. Is it possible to set one application to use one sound card simultaneously with another sound card routing to a different application? That would be sweet. For example, I have my surround speakers plugged into one sound card, so I can provide music for the whole room, and have my PC speakers next to the monitor playing a movie.
I have a need to run a specific app as a specific user when the machine boots into init 3. I can not run this as root so I need to specify a user. Can someone tell me how to accomplish this?I usually have to log in and start this application by typing check -D which starts this app and daemonizes it. I want to be able to run that at boot with my normal user not root.I hope I explained this correctly.I have added it to rc.local but it runs as root.
I currently have two internet interfaces installed, one is ethernet (eth0) and the second is wireless (wlan0). Many command line applications allow you to specify which interface should be used, but many gui apps don't provide this option or at least I haven't found it. I have some questions:
1. How would I tell Firefox to use only my wlan0 interface? If it's possible in Firefox, is this also possible with Google Chrome?
2. If a program doesn't provide a command line argument to support this, is there a standalone application that could help manage preferences for multiple applications?
concerning controlling the windows in virtual desktop.
a) Say to a application to be launched to virtual desktop 2 for example.
b) How can you ask from a virtual application to be only visible at one virtual desktop. For example I work on virtual desktop 6 and I want to start skype that should be on virtual desktop 2. Right now If I launch the app on virtual desktop 6 it will appear on the same one. Would it be possible to ask for an applicaiton to be launched on an other virtual desktop. If yew how?
I've recently upgraded to 11.04.Till now, I could select an option to make the open folders on shutdown, to restore on startup. There was an option to restore running applications
app deployment on Linux/debian and I'm using Debreate to create .deb packages which works fine. I install the software itself to /usr/bin but want to install the program's database to /home/username/myapp/ The problem is it that I don't know how to add the env variable 'username' to the target path. What is the exact syntax for this installation path?
How can I define a hotkey which will raise (and ideally also lower) a specific window or application?. Assuming epiphany is minimized, pressing F5 will raise the epiphany window. Pressing F5 again will minimize it. Something like guake/tilda.
i was wondering if there is away to avoid application from closing if a specific library not found? for example: if my application uses libPng and it wasn't found on the system running my app (binary and not source), is there anyway to just disable the part that uses png from my application?
I have two applications that I would like to always open up in Workspace 2, even when i restart my computer. Is there a GUI solution that can do this? One of the apps is the Sound Preference window I would like set to open with the input tab selected.
