Ubuntu :: Unable To Use SPM After Upgrading To 11.04
Apr 29, 2011
I like to remove the not installed (residual config) files so I go into Synaptic package manager and select all of the files I want to remove and click for a complete removal after it gets done doing whatever it does to get them ready, the files are highlighted like they suppose to be, but the apply button on the top is greyed out, so I am unable to remove any files from SPM. I don't know if this is a bug or just me could someone help me out?
After upgrading ubuntu 10.10 I realized that I am not able to ssh into our university server, I have to add that, there is not any problem from outsite ...
I've just upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 (32 bits). Everything seemed to be working great until I tried to hibernate; now it just goes into a blank screen and the "crescent" hibernation/suspend blinking LED on my Lenovo X200 just keeps blinking, and I had to force-shutdown the computer to turn it off. In short, hibernation doesn't work for me in 10.10. This didn't happen prior to the upgrade.
I just upgraded to 11.04 from 10.10 (which I had to reinstall after upgrading to 11.04 beta and attempting to install gnome 3 but I digress) and now my monitors are permanantly stuck on clone. When I go into monitor preferences and uncheck same image in all monitors I get a popup error
"The selected configuration for displays could not be appliedrequested position/size for CTRC 148 is outside the allowed limit : position=(1680,0), size=(1680,1050) maximum=(1920,1920)"
What I want to do is set one monitor to 1680x1050 and the other to 1920x1080 but basically it is telling me it needs a resolution higher than this seemingly arbitrary number...in my past adventures with this I was able to change some Xorg.conf file to increase this maximum but I think that was 10.10 and now I cannot find a file that has that setting in it.
So here's the deal: I was happily using 10.10 to create ad-hoc wifi networks on my Dell Vostro 3700 with Broadcom BCM4313. Everything worked 100%
After upgrading to 11.04, I am still able to connect to existing Wi-Fi networks, BUT I can't create ad-hoc networks anymore for some reason!
Specifically, NetworkManager is failing with its association request to the driver. Repeatedly. Until I get another screen in the GUI prompting me for the password details.
I've just upgraded my server installation from 9.04 to 9.10. I'm running this as a Xen virtual machine. All seemed to go well until I restarted, at which point I got stuck at this point:
Begin: Running /scripts/init-bottom ... Done. mountall:/proc: unable to mount: Device or resource busy mountall:/proc/self/mountinfo: No such file or directory
[code]...
My service provider is running xen-shell 1.0.79 running on Xen version 3.0.3-1, and after the seemingly-successful do-release-upgrade, uname -r reports ubuntu kernal 2.6.18-5-xen-amd64. Unfortunately, this isn't mentioned as a possible problem here [URL]
I am new to Ubuntu. I recently upgraded my Ubuntu from 9.10 to 10.4 (64bit) since then I am unable to dual boot to WIN2K3 from the same HDD as my Ubuntu. I have ran some of the suggestions like: Sudo update grub and Testdisk both did not provide any errors on my partitions and my primary partition displayed in Testdisk was WIN2K3, now when I reboot and select it from the boot menu it just simply show a blinking cursor.
I am out of ideas and I need a solution to suit my configuration. I prefer not to re-install or repair any WIN2K3 OS. Can someone assist and let me know what you need from me to further understand my issue.
After upgrading to 10.10, I have been unable to use the software center to install. Every time I click 'install', the install progress bar just hangs, reading 'Waiting for apt-get to exit'. The same thing happens when attempting to install upgrades via Update Manager.
I can however update via Synaptic and using 'apt-get upgrade' in the terminal.
I am unable to shutdown ubuntu after upgrading it to Maverick Meerkat.
I can do Ctrl + Alt + F4 and then Ctrl + Alt + Del but it does not let me use the taskbar button. When I press the shutdown button it just takes me to login page.
I upgraded from grub to grub2 recently, and during an update of my system, it ran the update-grub command which prompted a window asking me where to install Grub. Since I didn't know what partition to install it to and the help suggested to install it to all if I was unsure what partition to install it to - I accidentally installed Grub to my Windows partitions (both the regular and the recovery console).
So now, I can't boot into Windows - the computer just hangs after Grub with a blinking cursor and I have to perform a hard reset. Is there any way for me to restore the boot record for the windows partition without having to reinstall windows from the ground up?! I can't use Linux for my webbanking and other important tasks, so (unfortunately) I need Windows back desperately!
Pre update (10.10) Synaptic Package Manager would allow me to delete residual config files by clicking the Apply button after marking them. Post update, the Apply button does not highlight or allow me to click it when I mark packages for complete removal.
I have just upgraded my OS from ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04.Now I'm facing problem of not having write permissions to USB drives (Pen drives).I have to use terminal with sudo to copy , move files and unmount media.
Had to reinstall 11.4 KDE 64 bit last weekend. This morning I upgraded from the default KDE (that comes with the 11.4 DVD) to KDE 4.6.3.On rebooting I am unable to login, after I enter my password the screen flickers, then I am presented again with the logon screen.
I was running Fedora 13 on my old computer with a nvidia Geforce FX 5200 graphics card using the nvidia-173xx driver from fusion. After upgrading to Fedora 14 (the first day of its release) the X server wasn't working anymore, the screen just froze up after the progress bar. With Alt+F4 I "moved" to text mode and gave the startx command, but I got the fatal error message that there was no usable configuration detected. I deleted the xorg.conf file and afterwards I was able to start X again. I use the nouveau driver now, but it doesn't nearly work as good as the nvidia-173xx driver. I have it installed, but when I try to activate it (by running nvidia-xconfig as root) the X server doesn't work again after restart, and I have to do the same thing all over again.
i am trying to upgrade to ubuntu 10.04 from 8.04, and am getting this warning:"Upgrading may reduce desktop effects, and performance in games and other graphically intensive programs. This computer is currently using the AMD 'fglrx' graphics driver. No version of this driver is available that works with your hardware in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.Do you want to continue?"should i continue? i have no idea what a 'fglrx graphics driver' is
Having all kinds of trouble with my video drivers after upgrading to 10.04 The error message I get is
Unable to initialize PCS database Missing PCS default file .etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default No devices I keep reinstalling my video drivers from the ati-driver.run file for my radeon 2400 card - seemingly successfully - but it doesn't seem to help and when I reboot i just get the limited video function
After upgrading my server from 10.04 to 10.10 I keep getting the following php error, "PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library '/usr/lib/php5/20090626+lfs/syck.so' - /usr/lib/php5/20090626+lfs/syck.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0"
I am unable to restore my iptables from iptables-save after upgrading Fedora. I cannot get iptables-restore to work, and I have resorted to entering rules manually using the GUI.
I downloaded Fedora-12-x86_64-netinst.iso, burned a CD and booted it to upgrade my Fedora 11 system. It seemed to be working at first, but after it made a network connection and spun for a while, it displayed an error message which I scrawled down with a pen that looked something like this:
2 hours later and my system was upgraded. No problems. Only thing was that there is no splash screen. For about 10 seconds a blinking cursor and a purple background with UBUNTU on it.Don't know if this is normal.
I am trying to upgrade KDE 4.4.5 to 4.5.0 (Kubuntu 10.04 LTS) but the attempt results in 22 packages that can be upgraded and 111 blocked updates.
The problem is due to a dependency issue with libqt4-assistant and ktorrent. aptutide offer me a solution to remove these two packages, as well as some other packages that seem important to me, and leave package kubuntu-desktop with unresolved dependencies. II don't know what that lib is needed for, but I use ktorrent every day. So this solution seems like a bad one to me.
How to upgrade to KDE 4.5 and keep ktorrent? Or is it better to wait for Kubuntu 10.10 release and then do a distro upgrade (which will surely get round the problem)?
I'm currently using Ubuntu 10.04 with LAMP and i have hosted my few websites in it.
What if I use do-release-upgrade, Do i have to configure each and every settings again or do-release-upgrade will automatically migrate all my settings.
I've recently done a full installation of 10.04 on my machine. Not too long after, I applied for a free 10.10 CD that Ubuntu offers instead of donwloading it due to no internet access.
How can I upgrade from 10.04 to 10.10 using the free CD that Ubuntu mailed to me?
I don't really want to consider doing a clean installation again as I have important programs and plug-ins installed on my current version.
How do I upgrade Xubuntu over the internet? I don't want to have to download torrents and stuff, but when I tried to upgrade via the update manager, it started upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 instead of Xubuntu. Now it's just sitting here telling me I have over a thousand updates available even though I never typed yes to the upgrade (I started it at the command line). I don't know how to shut it down.
EDIT: Nevermind, I figured it out. It actually was upgrading to xubuntu after all.
I am planning to upgrade my OS to the latest version of Ubuntu. I would like to retain some of my configuration files and startup scripts. Can someone please tell me what is the best way to do this? I mean what directories to make a backup of so that there are minimum clashes?
