Debian Hardware :: Unable To Get Sound Output Working Properly
Nov 4, 2010my cousin recently brought me an old dell to see if I could get it working.he mainly wants to use this machine to record himself playing guitar.I immediately tried installing ubuntu, but found it to be unbearably slow.the computer is on the verge of being an antique at 1ghz and 256mb of ram.so I started looking for alternatives, and decided to give debian a shot since I'm familiar with ubuntu and know that it is based on debian.I installed Debian Lenny from the netinst ISO and find it to be much quicker booting and loading programs than ubuntu.I will most likely put debian on my desktop when I'm finished getting this poor old dell set up.
I'm unable to get sound output working properly.I have checked that the volume is not muted. while using pidgin, after sending a message the "message sent" sound starts "skipping" like a scratched cd and the only way to get it to stop is to close the progam completely. I am unable to hear sound or watch videos with totem (and most likely other players, but I have not tested any yet).the files load audio files show their tag information and the length of the track and videos load the first frame but the file never actually plays. when I try to record with Sound Recorder, the application locks up.when I try to record with Audacity the software doesn't stop responding, but also doesn't record.I tried un-muting the microphone (monitor) to check that the microphone I have still works, and can hear it over the speakers, so this leads me to believe that my hardware is in good working order, but that I have something configured improperly.

Jan 25, 2011Running 10.10 and win 7 on my HP dv6-2150us laptop and I'm having a few issues.
First how do I get HDMI audio output to my TV? I think I have just a integrated Intel graphics card. It works fine in windows but I can't seem to get it to work in Ubuntu. I tried searching but couldn't find anything pertaining to this issue.

May 8, 2011I have a fresh install of Natty and i'm having some issues getting sound to work. My laptop has a built in sound card which works just fine. However, i also have a usb 5.1 sound card which isn't working at all. Both devices show up in 'Sound Preferences' but when i select the 5.1 device as the output device sound doesnt work. Feb 16, 2009I have installed Fedora 10-x86_64. I was happy and content with the distribution. Earlier, I found that there is no sound on my headphone's jack where as the normal sound output from my laptops's speakers is OK. I fiddled with the available mixers but couldnt get anything. There seem to be 5 different mixers (HDA, ALSA, OSS), 3 for the playback and 2 for the capture.
I am using an acer 4530 laptop. It has a nvidia Nforce MCP77 chipset. and the o/p lsmod| grep snd :

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Sound With New Sound Card - Web Browser Is Unable To Play Any Sound
Mar 24, 2010After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing,zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.

Jan 22, 2011I'm still trying to find out if my coby mp3 player will actually play mtv video files as is advertised.
ffmpeg -formats does list mtv but the only command I really ever used was one to convert a vid to an mp3 so I tried Code: ffmpeg -i test.mp4 -acodec copy output.mtv it returns Code: Unable to find a suitable output format for 'output.mtv' I can't find any mtv files online for purchase or free for that matter, so I know this is all pretty obscure but shouldn't there be a way to convert them since ffmpeg lists mtv format?

Feb 3, 2010I recently installed Kubuntu 9.10 (I think, the latest anyway) on my gf's computer. Everything works great, except for the sound output. The volume control works, (both the buttons on the computer and inside Kubuntu) but there is no sound output whatsoever (not in vlc, system sound etc). Ive googled a little, and I've seen some tips about get it, right click in on sound settings in the panel, and choosing preferences, I don't seem to have that tab, however I've got a "show mixer window" where I the can adjust volume.
I've got 2 tabs here ; 'HDA ATI SB' and 'HDA ATI HDMI' I guess the first one is the one that is the ordinary output, the other if I connect a tv or something. I've also read something about 'alsa' and 'alsamix' I don't seem to have that one, and I've tried sudo apt- but I've haven't been able to find it. I dont know if it is of any importance, but it is the 64bit version of Kubuntu. I'm not sure about exactly what soundcard and driver I've got, but the computer (laptop) is a pretty new HP, and when I run:

I switched my input from my internal mic to my USB one in my sound settings, and that fixed that. However, even if I set my output device to the USB, it still doesn't work. Does anyone have any advice? It works on Windows.

Ubuntu :: Sound Output Crippled By Firefox?
Jan 25, 2010I've had problems with my sound that i mentioned in this topic: t=1386194 but noone answered so i started trying things.I've updated ALSA and managed to partially achieve what i wanted to, but other things gets messed even worse. I've get rid of choppy sounds problems and i can get sound from few applications UNLESS firefox isn't one of them.The problem is. If i start firefox first, and open a page that is using sound for example ..... and start a vid. Sound from all other applications is somehow blocked untill i'll turn off firefox. Or, when i start a music player, open firefox, pause player, start vid on ..... i have no sound from firefox.
What's weird is that i started quakelive (a web browser based game), started a movie in vlc, and went to system > preferences > Sound / Programs using output atm tab. And there was no apps at all, and both, firefox and vlc were playing sound. (screenshot attached to show this) How can i make firefox not to 'take' whole sound output?btw.

Ubuntu :: Sound Does Not Come Out Of Headphones No Digital Output?
Sep 29, 2010Sound comes out of my laptop speakers, but only when hardware is selected as "Analog Stereo". "Digital Stereo" does not function at all. I don't think this is a priority though.
More importantly, my headphones do not have sound unless it is only partway plugged into the headphone jack. However, this does not help as sound is still coming out of my speakers. The instant I plug it all the way in, the sound disappears from both speakers and headphones. I have not tested this with multiple headphones (no access), but these ones work just fine in Windows 7 plugged in all the way.
I have tried an amazing number of things back in '09 when I was running 9.10, but gave up as no one could provide the answer. The threads that are related are:

I am now on a FRESH install of 10.04 Lucid Lynx, so any changes I made in attempt to fix it is gone.
Looking into alsamixer, I found that there is a headphones column, but no bar. It just says it's on. So headphones don't seem to have their own level of volume that's set too low.

Feb 28, 2011I just bought a powerful Sapphire nettop HD Mini-pc as shown here : [URL]
Installed a 32 bits version of ubuntu 10.10. Everything is working smoothly. So basically :
- installed 10.10 with usb key on HDD
- launch all update of the OS
- installed Nvidia closed driver
- update alsamixer to 1.0.23
So for now, I have in alsamixer 4 SPDIF out but no sound output from hdmi. HDMI output is well configured in the sound settings of ubuntu. I think this is linked to the ION 2 chipset and D510 proc.

My case also has a 3.5mm jack for headphones.If I plug in the headphones, I will hear audio from both the monitor speakers and the headphones. If I go into the Gnome sound preferences and change the output connector from Analog Output to Analog Headphones..it's the same thing.My preference would be to have the monitor audio muted automatically whenever I plug in the headphones. Jan 1, 2010I installed LMMS 0.4.5 on my computer (Ubuntu 9.10), but I'm getting no sound output from the program on ALSA, and whenever I try one of the other options (PulseAudio, OSS, etc.) it reverts to dummy audio. I tried installing JACK to correct the problem, but JACK seems to be giving errors and quitting, and in the past I've always used ALSA for LMMS and it's worked just fine.The problem is local to LMMS, even after a reinstall. My audio output is fine for all other programs I've tested the problem for so far.Also, I just noticed that my instances of LMMS are not being terminated after the windows are being closed...

Jan 17, 2010I installed the vkeybd program to easily create some tunes, but when i push any of the keyboard buttons no sound comes out. I do have sound in programs like vlc. I thought jack and timidity may have something to do with it, but starting and clicking on things in those programs didnt get me anywhere because I dont have much understanding about them.
