Ubuntu :: No Sound Output From Ekiga?
Aug 14, 2011
I am using ekiga 3.2.7 on Natty and I am able to make pc-to-phone calls but I am not getting any sound on my speakers. The person on the other line is able to hear me, but I cannot hear him. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

I had tried searching the forum for related sound help but to no avail. Thus i posted here in hope to get help.
I had been using fedora 12 since it release and been working wonderfully. Untill my last 2 update, my Voip softphone like twinkle, ekiga and linphone somehow have no sound out from speaker.
1. i can play all video and music with sound coming out from my laptop inbuilt speaker.
2. for twinkle, ekiga and linphone, there's no sound out from my laptop inbuilt speaker. That means, when i call a person, that person can hear me talking (my mic working good) but when he talk i am unable to hear him as no sound coming out from the speaker.
Note: i had call multiple different people and the result is the same.
I am on Gnome desktop with PusleAudio install and running since the releae of F12.

i just had to switch from 10 to 11 until 12 comes out, and after setting up asterisk, i noticed VERY VERY BAD sound quality, mostly comprised of severe jittering. I noticed that the way Fedora lets you work with your sound devices in 11 is way different (nicer, but obviously not complete) than ever before, and i am using the same asterisk configs as before, so i'm positive that this is NOT an asterisk issue, and does NOT really belong in this forum; however, only asterisk users will be able to replicate or identify with this issue.
Have any of you 11 users had this happen to you, and if so, did you figure out how to solve it? I'm sure that i can *try* adjusting asterisks jitter buffer settings, but like i said, it was NEVER an issue before 11... Another clue would be that i cannot get crap like gtk-recordmydesktop to produce sound (but that may very well be another issue; however i doubt it)...

I have a fresh install of Natty and i'm having some issues getting sound to work. My laptop has a built in sound card which works just fine. However, i also have a usb 5.1 sound card which isn't working at all. Both devices show up in 'Sound Preferences' but when i select the 5.1 device as the output device sound doesnt work. I ran the alsa-info.sh script and the output can be found here.

I have installed Fedora 10-x86_64. I was happy and content with the distribution. Earlier, I found that there is no sound on my headphone's jack where as the normal sound output from my laptops's speakers is OK. I fiddled with the available mixers but couldnt get anything. There seem to be 5 different mixers (HDA, ALSA, OSS), 3 for the playback and 2 for the capture.
I am using an acer 4530 laptop. It has a nvidia Nforce MCP77 chipset. and the o/p lsmod| grep snd :

I did a alsa-info and upload the details at:[url]

I recently installed Kubuntu 9.10 (I think, the latest anyway) on my gf's computer. Everything works great, except for the sound output. The volume control works, (both the buttons on the computer and inside Kubuntu) but there is no sound output whatsoever (not in vlc, system sound etc). Ive googled a little, and I've seen some tips about get it, right click in on sound settings in the panel, and choosing preferences, I don't seem to have that tab, however I've got a "show mixer window" where I the can adjust volume.
I've got 2 tabs here ; 'HDA ATI SB' and 'HDA ATI HDMI' I guess the first one is the one that is the ordinary output, the other if I connect a tv or something. I've also read something about 'alsa' and 'alsamix' I don't seem to have that one, and I've tried sudo apt- but I've haven't been able to find it. I dont know if it is of any importance, but it is the 64bit version of Kubuntu. I'm not sure about exactly what soundcard and driver I've got, but the computer (laptop) is a pretty new HP, and when I run:
Code:
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#*| grep Codec
I get the answer
Code:
Codec : IDT 92HD75B3X5

I have Ubuntu 9.10, and am trying to get my headset to work with it. It's a USB headset, not a bluetooth headset. Anyway, the input is working. I switched my input from my internal mic to my USB one in my sound settings, and that fixed that. However, even if I set my output device to the USB, it still doesn't work. Does anyone have any advice? It works on Windows.
The headset is: Planet UP-100, Genius G-Talk

I have recently installed ubuntu 10.04. The distro seems so much better than that I have before (8.1). Anyway after some days of trying I can say that ekiga doesn't work with 10.04. While I was perfectly able to use ekiga with 8.1, the 10.04 gives me connections problems.... it simply say says "Could not register (Failed)"
how to set a sip account (sip.12voip.com) with empathy??

I've had problems with my sound that i mentioned in this topic: t=1386194 but noone answered so i started trying things.I've updated ALSA and managed to partially achieve what i wanted to, but other things gets messed even worse. I've get rid of choppy sounds problems and i can get sound from few applications UNLESS firefox isn't one of them. The problem is. If i start firefox first, and open a page that is using sound for example ..... and start a vid. Sound from all other applications is somehow blocked untill i'll turn off firefox. Or, when i start a music player, open firefox, pause player, start vid on ..... i have no sound from firefox.
What's weird is that i started quakelive (a web browser based game), started a movie in vlc, and went to system > preferences > Sound / Programs using output atm tab. And there was no apps at all, and both, firefox and vlc were playing sound. (screenshot attached to show this) How can i make firefox not to 'take' whole sound output?btw.

Sound comes out of my laptop speakers, but only when hardware is selected as "Analog Stereo". "Digital Stereo" does not function at all. I don't think this is a priority though.
More importantly, my headphones do not have sound unless it is only partway plugged into the headphone jack. However, this does not help as sound is still coming out of my speakers. The instant I plug it all the way in, the sound disappears from both speakers and headphones. I have not tested this with multiple headphones (no access), but these ones work just fine in Windows 7 plugged in all the way.
I have tried an amazing number of things back in '09 when I was running 9.10, but gave up as no one could provide the answer. The threads that are related are:
[URL] (Don't worry about read-only file stuff, that is all resolved) [URL]
I am now on a FRESH install of 10.04 Lucid Lynx, so any changes I made in attempt to fix it is gone.
Looking into alsamixer, I found that there is a headphones column, but no bar. It just says it's on. So headphones don't seem to have their own level of volume that's set too low.
Here are some outputs: lcat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec:
Code:
Codec: Realtek ALC663
Codec: Nvidia MCP78 HDMI
aplay -l:

I just bought a powerful Sapphire nettop HD Mini-pc as shown here : [URL]
Installed a 32 bits version of ubuntu 10.10. Everything is working smoothly. So basically :
- installed 10.10 with usb key on HDD
- launch all update of the OS
- installed Nvidia closed driver
- update alsamixer to 1.0.23
So for now, I have in alsamixer 4 SPDIF out but no sound output from hdmi. HDMI output is well configured in the sound settings of ubuntu. I think this is linked to the ION 2 chipset and D510 proc.
dmesg|grep -i nvidia return :
[11.653064] nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.

I have one 3.5mm jack going from the back of my desktop motherboard to my monitor that has speakers. My case also has a 3.5mm jack for headphones. If I plug in the headphones, I will hear audio from both the monitor speakers and the headphones. If I go into the Gnome sound preferences and change the output connector from Analog Output to Analog Headphones..it's the same thing. My preference would be to have the monitor audio muted automatically whenever I plug in the headphones. I've searched other threads and can't seem to come up with a working solution.I've messed around in alsamixer and still no luck

I'm trying, reeeeally trying to use Ekiga. But the video quality is horrible. So I started messing with the settings, lo-and-behold I find info about h.264 and how fantastic it is. Well, I say to myself, let's try that on for size.
What? No h.264 option in Ekiga. That's weird, especially considering they have supported it since 3.0 and I'm using the version in the Karmic repos, 3.2.5. Not free, ok, I'll just install it then, right?
x264 package didn't do it. A little ffmpeg install as well. libavcodec52, which uninstalled a buttload of other stuff also. Even dl'd and installed libopal3.6.4-plugins-non-free. All to no option for the h.264 codec option in Ekiga.
Oddly enough, the libopal non free plugins DID add the iLBC audio codec into Ekiga as on option. Why not h.264? What am I missing? Also, why is this SO difficult? There is not any decent documentation that I can find out there that goes over this. Google has failed me.
All I have in the video codecs is theora and h261.

When I click on the Ekiga menu-item it seems like nothing is happening. So I went into htop and saw the process is running. When I start Ekiga from the command line, nothing happens as well. Then I tried starting Ekiga in debug modus with option -d 5. Still nothing showing up. When I call my VOIP number I can see a call coming in, however there is no ringing sound and no dialogue to pick up the phone.
Then I re-installed by 'aptitude purge ekiga' and then 'aptitude install ekiga'.
I am working on Ubuntu Karmic. The Ekiga version is straight from the repositories: Version: 3.2.5-1ubuntu1.
I hope someone has an idea what to try next.

I am using a NanoStation 2 in Router mode. The NS is connected wirelessly to my neighbor's router and a switch is connect via ethernet to the NS for LAN use.
The past few days I'm trying to use a VoIP client software to connect to my VoIP account.I use Ekiga Softphone to do so, which requires UDP ports 3478-3479 and 5000-5100 to be open.
So I have opened these ports both on my neighbor's router and on the NS.The problem that I'm encountering is that although I manage to register to the VoIP service, when I answer an incoming call the caller is able to hear me, but I'm not able to hear the caller. So I used wireshark and figured that there is no incoming traffic on my end.
I have used many linux VoIP clients with PCs connecting straight forward to an ADSL router and worked perfectly.

I'm trying to set up Empathy to connect to my Ekiga account, so I don't have to have two programs running side by side, but I'm running into some trouble.
In the window for adding accounts in Empathy, there's a drop-down menu for choosing the desired protocol and service. I hear there's supposed to be en "Ekiga" menu option there, but there isn't.
I'm running Empathy 2.30.2 in Lucid.

I installed LMMS 0.4.5 on my computer (Ubuntu 9.10), but I'm getting no sound output from the program on ALSA, and whenever I try one of the other options (PulseAudio, OSS, etc.) it reverts to dummy audio. I tried installing JACK to correct the problem, but JACK seems to be giving errors and quitting, and in the past I've always used ALSA for LMMS and it's worked just fine. The problem is local to LMMS, even after a reinstall. My audio output is fine for all other programs I've tested the problem for so far. Also, I just noticed that my instances of LMMS are not being terminated after the windows are being closed...
Notable system info:
Ubuntu 9.10 x86 (kernel 2.6.31-16-generic) installed via Wubi
LMMS 0.4.5 (installed via Ubuntu Software Centre)
3.06 GHz Pentium IV (it looks like dual core)
