Ubuntu :: Windows Host To VM Guest Communications?

Dec 7, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 desktop in a VirtualBox VM on a Windows 2008 host machine. The end goal is join the the Ubuntu VM to a Windows 2008 domain. I've downloaded likewilikewise-open_5.4.0.42111-2ubuntu1.2_i386.deb se-open_5.4.0.42111-2ubuntu1.2_i386.deb to get the joining of the VM to the domain. But from this point forward, I'm completely lost.

1) How do I implement this likewise package?
2) How do I get files from my Windows 2008 host to the Ubuntu guest VM?

The likewise file is burned to a DVD. When I try to read the DVD, I get the "My Disk" icon but only one file gets displayed. In other words, the DVD the likewise file is burned to has a ton of files. Ubuntu doesn't see any of them expect one .exe file. The /etc/fstab had no entry for cdrom, so I put a line in that says

/dev/hdc /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user, noauto 0 0 rebooted and that didn't do squat. There is no entry /etc/cdrom but there is directory /etc/My Disc. And I suppose that's what gets mounted because I can see one file on that disc. So then I thought, to hell with the DVD drive and I'll just get the Linux guest to see a "shared drive" on the host. I shared out a folder on the host via the Virtualbox "shared folders". But how I get the Ubuntu guest to see this shared folder is as big a mystery to me as is the creation of life.

Ubuntu :: Unable To Drag Files From Host To Guest XP In VMware

Feb 11, 2010

I can no longer drag files from my ubuntu host into my XP guest. I have vmware tools installed in XP and up until recently I could simply drag whatever I wanted back and forth between the systems. When I try to drag a file across into XP the cursor has the plus sign like it would normally to drop a file in, but now it also makes a selection box on the XP desktop. Same problem in Workstation and Player. I haven't posted on the vmware forums yet, I figured someone here probably has had the same problem. I don't think it was a kernel update. I restarted ubuntu with 2.6.31.18 which was fully functional before, still with the same problem.

Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Reach Guest OS In VirtualBox From OSX Host

May 18, 2011

Recently I've been unable to load web pages, hosted on my Ubuntu Guest in Apache, from my OSX Host. In fact, I can no longer even ping the Guest OS from the Host. In the past, when I did ifconfig on the Guest, I got an IP of 10.0.1.n. Now I'm getting 10.0.2.15--the default NAT Address. The thing is, I didn't change any settings recently. What I did do is run software update for OSX, Ubuntu, and updated VirtBox.

Current Versions:

VirtBox 4.0.8 r71778
Host: OSX 10.6.7
Guest: Ubuntu 11.04

why I can no longer access my Guest OS from my Host? I spent hours on this last night, to no avail. What would cause the Guest IP to change from 10.0.1.n to 10.0.2.15? As I say, I manually made no config changes.

General :: Can't Use Windows Installation Both As A Host And A Guest?

Jul 5, 2011

I have Linux installed on my harddrive, sometimes I run it as the host operating system and sometimes run it as a guest in Windows using VirtualBox. It's a nice ability, I think.

I don't think it's possible with Windows though. Is it because your average distribution includes drivers for everything known to man? Are devices/drivers configured statically in Windows so when somethings changed it breaks?

General :: Accessing VPN Resources In Windows Guest From Host

Nov 4, 2010

I have a Ubuntu hosting a Windows XP box (using VirtualBox). The Windows XP box is connected to work using Check Point VPN-1. Essentially this enables me to go to my Windows box and do something like ping comp-at-work and it just works.

I would like to access the VPN resources from the Linux host though. The Windows guest is only there because the VPN client isn't working in Linux. If I could somehow ssh from the Linux host right into my computer at work (using remote desktop would also be great), that would save me a lot of round trips between my Linux host and the Windows guest.

OpenSUSE :: Releasing Usb Port From Linux Host To Windows Xp Vm Guest

Mar 31, 2011

I am trying to connect an ipad to a windows xp virtual machine running in a linux (opensuse) host machine. VMWare reports that usbmuxd running on the host machine (opensuse) must first release the usb port so that vmware can open it in the guest (XP) vm. VMWare knows that I have physically connected an ipad and when I click "Connect" reports the error and then displays the port as "Connected" although according to ITunes diagnostics there is no such connection. I have the same problem connecting a usb flash drive to the guest vm. Is there a way I can manually disconnect the port from the opensuse host?

General :: Using Samba To Share A Folder From A Guest With A Windows Host In VirtualBox

Mar 15, 2011

I would like to share a folder from a Linux Guest with a Windows host (with read and write access if possible) in VirtualBox. I read in these two links: here and here that it's possible to do this using Samba, but I am a little bit lost and need more information on how to proceed.

So far, I managed to set up two network adapters (one NAT and one host-only) and to install Samba on the Linux guest, but I have the following questions now: What do I need to type in samba.conf to share a folder from the Linux guest? (the tutorial provided in one of the links above only explains how to share home directories) Are there any Samba commands that I need to run on the guest to enable sharing? How do I make sure that these folders are only available to the host OS and not on the Internet? Once the Linux guest is setup, how do I access each of the individual shared folders from the Windows host? I read that I need to mount a drive on Windows to do this, but do I use Samba logins, or Linux logins, also do I use localhost? or do I need to set up an IP for this?

Networking :: QEMU: Tap Host: Windows 2003 Server - Guest: Ubuntu 9.04 - No Ip Address And Can't Access Public

Oct 28, 2010

host is windows 2003 server 64-bit
guest is ubuntu 9.04 server 64bit
Qemu : 0.11.1
Qemu manager: 7.0

from Qemu manager, if network card is using User Networking, it's a NAT and I can see that Guest Ubuntu has an ip address 10.0.2.15 and is able to access the internet. However, as Guest ubuntu is running server so I want to do use Tap networking and I assue with Tap, the Guest ubuntu will get an ip address which is in the same subnet as host machine by dhcp. so from Qemu Manager 7.0, I changed Network card to be:

NE2000PCI
Vlan Number =0
VLAN Type: Tap Networking
Mac address: tap0's mac address from host
TAP Network Adpator: Tap0

Note that tap0 was created by openvpn. and then fired Ubuntu guest, ifconfig shows no ip address on eth0 (which has the same mac address as Tap0) so the guest Ubuntu has no ip address and can't access public.

Fedora :: Virtualization With Fedora 13 As Host And Windows Vista As Guest Activation

Sep 2, 2010

I have windows vista 32bit oem that originally came with DELL system when I bought new. On the PC, MS$ sticker has the product key for windows vista. When I reformatted the disk and re-install windows vista natively on the machine for which it was licensed, it got automatically activated and passed MS$ genuine check. But I got into problems when using windows vista as guest os from fedora 13 host os using virtualbox on exactly same machine for which vista is licensed for. I go that MS$ : x -days to automatic activation, activate now link. Clicking on activate now it says invalid product key even I entered correct product key as it is on the PC.

I tried to create new windwos vista guest os 2 ways:
1) using existing native installation of windows vista by using vmware converter to create vmware disk image of the running windows vista and shutting down and log back into fedora 13 used this disk image as the storage in virtualbox and create windows vista guest. It starts up ok except for that activation issue.
2) using the windows vista dvd and using that as the source for new windows vista installation in virtualbox. All fine except got that activation issue. After killing my 2 days just for this I dont know whats next. Does that not make sense that I have a license for using windows vista on this specific pc, I am entitled to install it on that same pc as virtual or native or even both ways ?

This link: http://www.zdnet.com/blog/bott/vista-vi icture/360 says starting with service pack 1 MS$ now allows virtual installation of windows oem. My native installation was updated to service pack 2 and I also updated the fresh dvd install of windows vista in virtualbox to service pack 1 and then service pack 2 but still no effect in regard to license activation.Did any one solved the problem in some way regarding this issue for windows vista, I would like to know.

General :: Windows XP Vmware Guest Unable To Access Certain Internet Hosts

I have annoying problem. My setup is the following: debian Linux, 64 bits, VMWare workstation 7 host, with Windows XP running as guest. From Firefox, or Internet Explorer, I am unable to access few sites, for example nvidia.com, osdir. Basically get connection timed out, on the other hand ping works to those sites. Moreover, Slashdot loads very very slow and sometimes gets horrible text-only version.

everything works fine on Linux host

I suspect it has something to do with routing on Linux, I recall having similar problem long time ago, which was fixed by setting something in /proc.

I tried setting MTU and TCP window size on Windows lower, but did not help

Typically I would read the contents of /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THRM/temperature on host ubuntu desktop. I guess its more tricky when running ubuntu on windows host. What I am trying to do is shutdown guest if host cpu temperature is greater than certain value.

Software :: Ubuntu 10.4 VB Guest Cannot Write To Shares On 9.10 Host

Jun 11, 2010

I just upgraded to the newest VirtualBox, version3.2.4.r62467 and installed Ubuntu 10.4/64 guest on an Ubuntu 9.10/64 host. I installed the guest additions and set 3 shared drives. I can see them in the "machine folders" names, paths and access modes in the "shared folders" dialog. But, when I try to write to them, I always get Permission Denied!

I mounted it as root:
mount -t vboxsf tera /vb/tera
It shows up in mtab:
root@ubu-10:/vb# grep tera /etc/mtab
tera /vb/tera vboxsf rw 0

I can see the listing:
root@ubu-10:/vb# ls /vb/tera
bak Recycled <snip>

But, the permissions are wrong and can not be corrected. Chmod and chown are ignored?!
root@ubu-10:/vb# ll /vb | grep tera
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 12288 2010-05-04 09:42 tera/
root@ubu-10:/vb# chown brianp /vb/tera
root@ubu-10:/vb# chmod 775 /vb/tera
root@ubu-10:/vb# ll /vb | grep tera
drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 12288 2010-05-04 09:42 tera/

I am running as root:
root@ubu-10:/vb# whoami
root
The VB shared folders dialog, machine folders shows /tera with access Full. /etc/mtab confirms that it is rw

I own it on the host:
brianp@trex:~$ ll / | grep tera
drwxr-xr-x. 16 brianp root 12K 2010-05-04 09:42 tera
Why can't I write to it?
