Ubuntu :: Time Not Synching \ It Corrects Itself Randomly But Then Goes Back?

Jul 15, 2010

My time keeps getting thrown off by about 15 minutes. It corrects itself randomly but then goes back! Not sure yet if it's decrementing slowly or if it takes 15 off all at once.ntpdate ntp.ubuntu.com puts it back, output is:Code:15 Jul 08:09:29 ntpdate[6157]: step time server 91.189.94.4 offset 1056.199059 secCurious what the "offset" means. Is there a way to ensure it keeps constant time without having to do it manually?

Ubuntu :: Monitor Randomly Loses Signal And Cannot Be Turned Back On

Feb 11, 2011

I have this issue with two different computers. One is a dell optiplex gx60 and the other a hp pavilion a317x. The two monitors are a hp pavilion f70 and a nec mulitsync lcd.

The problem I have is the monitor will randomly turn off like it would if the signal is lost but the computer is still running. I cannot get the monitor back on unless I do a hard shutdown and reboot. Sometimes it will happen within minutes of turning on the computer and sometimes it will take hours or days. I have had this problem with ubuntu 10.04 which is currently installed, mint 9 xfce, and mint 9 fluxbox. The only distro that it did not do this on was peppermint ice and windows xp.

I don't know at this point if it is hardware or software related. I am new to linux so I don't know what else to look for.

Hardware :: Ipw2100 Wireless Adapter Switches Off And Back On Randomly?

Mar 9, 2011

I have a Fujitsu Siemens T3010 Lifebook on which I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed. The installed kernel is 2.6.35-27. lspci lists the installed network contraller as:

01:0d.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter (rev 04) At first glance, the wireless adapter seems to be functioning normally. The problem is that every once in a while the wireless connection gets dropped, and gets reestablished a while later. At times, this happens very frequently. I have been able to figure out that the reason that the connection is dropped is due to a HW rfkill. The 'rfkill list' command produces the following output following the connection getting dropped:

Code:
0:phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes

'Hard blocked: no' is printed whenever the connection is up and running. The laptop does in fact have a physical killswitch located behind it and needless to say turning it off also produces the same result. However, the loop of the connection getting dropped and reestablished happens even in the absence of physical contact altogether, so it can't be that a slight wobble is being misinterpreted as the killswitch has been triggered or anything.

I have a nasty feeling that the problem may be due to a physical problem - but I want to exhaust all other alternatives before I go digging into the box. Even if it is not fixable, perhaps there may be a way to override the problem somehow. I am posting a section from my daemon.log that spans a single rfkill loop below.

If I do a Code: watch date it updates the screen every 2 seconds, and you can clearly see the time flip back a few seconds, and then go back to the correct time.. I literally did this 10 seconds ago..

Ubuntu :: Freezing With Flash - Screen Randomly Whited Out Fading In Splotches To Black And Then Back To White

Dec 18, 2010

I am having a problem. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Sony Vaio FW series. It has Nvidia graphics that I don't think the OS is taking advantage of, whatever. It also came with 64-bit Windows, it's a 32-bit OS, and again, as far as I have been concerned, whatever. It's been functioning fine for the half a year since I installed it.

Until recently. My computer has been freezing. What happened first is that the screen randomly whited out, fading in splotches to black and then back to white. This freaked me out, but restarting seemed to smooth things out. Then windows in the OS wouldn't resize, then Flash videos would freeze the OS up, repeating the 2 seconds of sound it last played. Over and over again. In a loop. On a white screen. Sometimes with vertical stripes.

This all happens inconsistently, and whenever I restart it's fine again. I just want to know if there's a deeper issue so that I can resolve it. Otherwise I have been completely satisfied, as a previous Windows and OSX user who is computer-competent within a GUI.

General :: Keyboard Activating SHIFT Randomly For A Short Time

Feb 14, 2010

I think this might be related to the changes to using udev or DeviceKit. It started when I was running the beta versions of F12. Then it crept into Debian Sid. And my Arch Testing and Gentoo also suffer from the same.

What happens is that I'll be working along. Then when I press any key it is as if the SHIFT key is pressed. When I press CAPSLOCK, some of the keys react as they would normally. This never lasts for more than 5 minutes. And seems to happen infrequently. I say seems because there are the times I am at work and it could be that the same thing is happening only there is no one on the keyboard.

The reason I pick out udev/DeviceKit is that when it used to happen to F12 beta, the other distros had not yet made the move. So back then it was only a F12 issue. Now it is happening across the board. And only started recently.

Ubuntu One :: Newly Added Files To Folder Not Synching

Jan 7, 2011

I was able to synch my folders to Ubuntu One.However, when I add any new files to one of the synched folders, it is not synching up to Ubuntu One. I've tried re-synching the folder where I place the file and all I get is the circular arrow with the ! in it. I've also tried disconnecting and connecting in the Device tab on "Ubuntu One Preferences". Am I missing a procedure here or is this a bug? I would hope that adding, removing, or updating files would automatically be synched.

Fedora Installation :: Kernal Panic - Not Synching - VFS - Unable To Mount Root Fs On Unknown Block - 0,0

Aug 14, 2009

I've got the following system:

Quote:

I've been having problems with the system ever since I replaced the motherboard. Moving slow and just generally acting 'wonky.' Well the other day I reached my frustration limit and wiped the HDD. Up to this point the HDD had been in 2 partitions, one for the DELL diagnostics and one for the OS, XP Pro.

I decided that I wanted to set up the system in a dual-boot during the rebuild so I created a two partitions using the Windows install. Partition one is the DELL Diagnostic partition, partition 2 is the XP Pro partition and partition 3 is to be the Linux partition. All seemed to go well with the Windows install. I got the OS up and running and got all the updates done and drivers installed.

I only have the one HDD in the system so I was going to have to make this dual-boot off of one HDD.

I had previously, within the past week or two, downloaded the .iso and created the disk for FC11.

I went through the install process and successfully installed Linux on the 3rd partition, or so I thought. When I attempted to boot into Linux I got the Kernal Panic error.

My grub file as it exists now is:

Code:

If I leave the file as is, I get the kernal panic error but the splash image works fine. If I try to change the 'splash image' and 'root' references from '(hd0,2),' then neither works.

I can boot into Windows XP from the setup as it is now.

I if I boot using my LoaS (FC 11 made at the same time as the images for the cds were downloaded) I can see the hdd and multiple partitions. There seems to be a 'boot' partion, the Linux OS partition, a swap partion, as well as the Dell and XP partions. Now I've tried changing the references in the grub file to reflect the different partitions, basically I've tried 2, 3, 4 and 5, everything but 0 (the dell diagnostics) and 1 (the XP Pro).

I've also re-wiped the HDD and started the whole process over from scratch, thinking maybe I'd hosed something up the first time, but being a firm believer in 'Always do what you've always done and you'll always get what you've always gotten,' and that one of the definitions of insanity it keep performing the same actions over and over and expect different results, I seem to be at impasse here.

Results from 'sfdisk -l'

Ubuntu :: Back It Time Backup Utility?

Jan 6, 2010

How many of you guys use Back In Time as your backup utility? I tried using it, and it doesn't copy all of the folder contents to the backup drive in one pass. For example, it will copy 26 out of 80-ish gigs of data. To further complete the backup, I have to hit the "Take a snapshot" button to do another pass to add more data to the snapshots. I have to do this a couple times to get all the data.Does anyone else have this issue?

[UPDATE] It appears to copy all of the files at once, so long as you only select one backup location at a time. I was backing up an entire multimedia drive, my home directory, and my usb drive. When I had it set to only do the multimedia drive, it copied all of the files, whereas it wouldn't if I had set it up to back up all 3 locations at the same time. I guess the lesson here is to backup one location, then add another, get another snapshot, and repeat.

Ubuntu :: Back In Time - Restore After Re-install ?

Sep 12, 2010

I have my system and software and data on my computer on an internal drive. On that system I have Back in Time backup software. I use Back in Time, to backup my data to an external drive.

Question: If my computer dies or my internal drive fails, I have to completely re-install everything including my system and Back in Time. If I want to restore my data from the good external drive, how can I do that with Back in Time? Doesn't it keep the Snapshots info or preferences on my dead drive? Or do I need to point my freshly re-installed Back in Time just to the data drive and it will recognize the snapshots etc. automatically?

So far its been working fine for a while now but if I need to move my files and re format it to ext4 and move them back I would rather do it now when there is less data on the drive.
