Ubuntu :: Running "Back In Time" As Root?
Feb 21, 2010
I would like "Back in time" to run as root when Ubuntu boots. The reason I want to run it this way is after I read the documentation it would seem that although you can take snapshots of folders which are root you can't restore them. That being said, it goes on to say that if run as root it would be able to.
First question: Is this safe for a home computer with one user?
Second Question: How do I make it run as root at startup?

For like windows you can resore your os to a state of peace kind of. If you messed up your vital files you could go back in time and restore you computer to a selected time. I was wondering if you could do that for ubuntu

So I transfered a few folders with videos in them to the public folder on an Ubuntu 10.04 laptop I have from my Ubuntu 10.04 64bit laptop. When I wanted to delete the folder I didn't have permission so I ran "gksudo nautilus" so I could delete it as root. So I deleted the folder but I did not get the space back!
I went to /.local/Shared/Trash and one of the folders I deleted was there but deleting it didn't get that space back either.
I did some searching but most of what I find doesn't help or tells me to look in the folder /.local/Shared/Trash folder but that didn't help any.

want to run VirtualBox with root permissions. Trouble is that only when run as root i can access attached USB devices inside of a virtual machine, otherwise, these a greyed out). Now running VirtualBox as a root user also changes the configuration folders, making all my virtual machines already defined disappear. I also don't want to copy all to the root configuration folders. Is there a way to give the VirtualBox root permissions but without actually running the application as a root user. Is it possible to do without changing the permissions of the non-root user, i.e. i don't want my user to have all root permissions, due to security considerations.

Is suid disabled from running all home made bash scripts or just from running them as root or:
Who would know for sure.
I googled several combinations of Mandriva Linux how-to suid disabled setUID etc... so far all I found was "many distributions are disabling suid for security reasons" nothing specific.

How many of you guys use Back In Time as your backup utility? I tried using it, and it doesn't copy all of the folder contents to the backup drive in one pass. For example, it will copy 26 out of 80-ish gigs of data. To further complete the backup, I have to hit the "Take a snapshot" button to do another pass to add more data to the snapshots. I have to do this a couple times to get all the data.Does anyone else have this issue?
[UPDATE] It appears to copy all of the files at once, so long as you only select one backup location at a time. I was backing up an entire multimedia drive, my home directory, and my usb drive. When I had it set to only do the multimedia drive, it copied all of the files, whereas it wouldn't if I had set it up to back up all 3 locations at the same time. I guess the lesson here is to backup one location, then add another, get another snapshot, and repeat.

I have my system and software and data on my computer on an internal drive. On that system I have Back in Time backup software. I use Back in Time, to backup my data to an external drive.
Question: If my computer dies or my internal drive fails, I have to completely re-install everything including my system and Back in Time. If I want to restore my data from the good external drive, how can I do that with Back in Time? Doesn't it keep the Snapshots info or preferences on my dead drive? Or do I need to point my freshly re-installed Back in Time just to the data drive and it will recognize the snapshots etc. automatically?

I used Back In Time (BIT) to back up my data to an external USB drive on Ubuntu 12.04. After problems with Ubuntu I made a fresh install of Debian 8.3. In Debian I have installed BIT and can see the USB drive. However, BIT cannot see the old snapshots. I had thought I would be able to restore on the new install.

My time keeps getting thrown off by about 15 minutes. It corrects itself randomly but then goes back! Not sure yet if it's decrementing slowly or if it takes 15 off all at once.ntpdate ntp.ubuntu.com puts it back, output is:Code:15 Jul 08:09:29 ntpdate[6157]: step time server 91.189.94.4 offset 1056.199059 secCurious what the "offset" means. Is there a way to ensure it keeps constant time without having to do it manually?

I am trying to understand these two examples for setting up user-callback option in back in time application. I am trying to modify this to suit my needs, Back in time homepage has some basic info, but very terse, same with the man page. The following two examples are the only references I could find. first one from here - I don't want email to be sent, just an update to the log file will be fine.

Login in problems:
I was trying to fix the brightness on my toshiba T130 Satellite laptop and found these instruction [Note: I did not try XRANDR option]
If backlight control doesn't work with the 'XRANDR' option above, use this code...
Safe the file, run 'sudo update-grub' and reboot.
Credits: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...id/+bug/392948
http://www.linlap.com/wiki/toshiba+satellite+t130
However after running these instructions and rebooting my laptop I lost the GUI, and do not know how to get it back.
If it helps the loader screen with the 4 dots has gone slightly skewed, and I've downloaded the most recent update changes.
I can get GUI through recovery mode and running it in failsafex, but I don't think this is a good solution.

My problem is music playback it seems to act as if it is buffering every few seconds ,at some point playback just stops and seems to freeze up the rythmplayer, I had the same problem with ubuntu, linux mint now I'm trying fedora 14 wich i seem to be having the best luck, with my msi 7142 M.B.I did find one forum here with that sounded much the same but was unsolved.
1: how do I get back in to the terminal as root ?
2: how do I check DMA on my cd/dvd -cd rom ? if thats the problem
3: could it be my sound card? turtle beach santa cruz
(right now the pc i was using to check out the the diff distro's is using debian so far it is playing a cd just fine, the problems seem to just be on my main pc)I really really could use the help I've been working on this for over a month, searching, reading threads, all I can to even just learn in hopes of escaping windows during this doing a duel boot caused windows to crash (kinda funny, but a pain, good thing I backed up my music.

I have a switch tray on my computer and I installed opensuse in one of the hard drives that I have but as I switch between the windows hard drive and opensuse the time changes all the time. For example it's 10pm right now and if I switch the hard drive to opensuse the time automatically gets adjusted 4 hours back and then I fix it and when I switch back to my windows hard drive the time goes forward 4 hours. I check both region settings and they are both set to NY Eastern time. Why is it doing this?

I'm running F 13 and today's updates included updates to Xorg, so I logged out and back in to let them take effect. Ever since then, Firefox has been repeatedly crashing, especially on certain sites. I managed to get the crash reporting tool to report it to Bugzilla, but when I try to go back to add the bug report to this post, Firefox crashes, every single time. Has anybody else found this? If somebody can get to bugzilla.redhat.com and find the report (The email address I use there is joe@zeff.us if it helps.) I'd appreciate having it added as a response to this, so that others can find it and,

I've changed the power preferences, and activated the option: "Spin down hard disks when possible", but didn't have any effect.

I do not understand, do I have an Intel video card, or an Nvidia video card? Should I install the Nvidia video card driver, because every time I try, everything gets real glitchy and I revert back to my original setup.
