It wont let me see the messages correctly. its slow and takes forever to load. I cannot read mail or switch between accounts easily any more. Do i need to remove it and reload? Tonight I did the usual apt-get update/upgrade and it installed a newer version of Thunderbird.
Synaptic says the version I have is 3.0.5+build2+nobin.
Their is a bug [URL] that refers to an upstream directory which I don't have. Apparently some recent upgrades have produced some kind of circular link. I am not sure whether that is the problem I have but this is supposed to give the answer. Not sure whether it does but here is some terminal output:
kgw@kgw-desktop:~$ ls -ld ~/.*thunderbird*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 kgw kgw 22 2010-04-22 20:48 /home/kgw/.mozilla-thunderbird -> /home/kgw/.thunderbird
drwx------ 3 kgw kgw 4096 2009-12-08 14:34 /home/kgw/.thunderbird
When I click on the Thunderbird icon, there is an item that appears in the bar at the bottom of my screen that says Thunderbird and it produces a tiny vertical bar at the top of my screen that can be dragged into a an application window that is blank.
Oddly, when I asked firefox to send a link (forgetting that thunderbird wasn't working) it popped up the usual box to send an email and let me send it. The main screen of thunderbird still won't start.

I just upgraded from TB 3.0 to 3.1 and now I can't access my email account. (It has a lock on the account icon and there are no subfolders available -- see attached.)
What could be wrong?

Today I received a pop-up from Ubuntuzilla indicating that version 3.1 of Thunderbird was available. So I started Ubuntuzilla and updated Thunderbird to version 3.1, as I did successfully before with previous version updates. The update proceeded normally, without any error. However, now Thunderbird does start. I get the "Starting Thunderbird" in the bottom status bar for a few seconds, then nothing! I checked with Synaptic Package Manager, but it only indicates version 3.0.4

I've upgraded my 10.04 (64bits) into 10.10 (64bits) on sunday and since I can't get thunderbird working anymore, I get the following error :
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/nppdf.so [/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/nppdf.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS32]
Inconsistency detected by ld.so: dl-open.c: 612: _dl_open: Assertion `_dl_debug_initialize (0, args.nsid)->r_state == RT_CONSISTENT' failed!
It seems nspluginwrapper has similar issues...
I've seens there has been similar problems with skype but downgrading to ia32-libs_2.7ubuntu26_amd64.deb didn't fix the problem.

Ever since I upgraded to 10.10 (via update, not from scratch), Thunderbird suddenly ramps up CPU usage within the 10 seconds of being started. No add-ons are enabled. Anyone have this problem or can help me troubleshoot?

Since upgrading to 10.04 Thunderbird doesn't work properly. It is Thunderbird 3.04. It works for locally-created users but exits with 'segmentation fault' when the user is from LDAP. In the latter case, the home directory is local, created by pam_mkhomedir. I get the same problem with a newly-installed 10.04 system.
I cannot understand why it worked fine in 9.10 but not in 10.04. I set "set -x" in the thunderbird script and here is the trace from that:
$ thunderbird
+ moz_libdir=/usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.4
+ found=0
+ progname=/usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.4/thunderbird
+ dirname /usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.4/thunderbird
+ curdir=/usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.4
+ basename /usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.4/thunderbird
+ progbase=thunderbird

I notice the repository Thunderbird version is 3.0.5 but 3.1 is already released. I'm on 3.0.4 and it took me forever to find a compatible version of the Lightning extension, which I really need.Now I am afraid to upgrade to anything older than 3.1 because it might break Lightning, and I'm afraid to upgrade to 3.1 because maybe there's a reason it's not in the official repository yet (and because who knows if the latest version of Lightning really is compatible with the latest version of Thunderbird). My question is, is anybody out there currently running Thunderbird 3.1 with the Lightning extension on Kubuntu or Ubuntu 10.04, AMD64? Have you found it to be stable?

Fix my fonts after my upgrade. All my truetype fonts look really hazy and very off after my upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04.
This seems to only be a Firefox and Thunderbird problem.

I'm running Mozilla Firefox 3.6.17. Can someone tell me the easiest way to upgrade to a newer version? When I search on Google, I get ;lots & lots of pages & they give me 20-different instructions on how to do it & i'm confused. Not sure which command to use (There is no "upgrade" option in the "tools" area of Firefox.) Do we upgrade in the command-line?

I had FF and TB running on a desktop computer which was on Suse 11.0. That computer has gone to the Great Interrupt in the Sky. The hard drive still works, and I can hook it up to the replacement (laptop) with an eSATA cable. Thus, all of my email, settings, bookmarks, etc are sitting there waiting to go back to work.
My new laptop is on Suse 11.2, with the FF version which came on the DVD (from Linux Pro Magazine in February). I would like to A), load the latest vers of FF and TB onto this laptop, and B), move my older FF and TB stuff to run here. I am little more than the ignorant appliance operator so derided by Linux gurus in the "Why New Users Give Up" thread. I want to learn more, but my primary need is PRODUCTIVITY, so what I need is an 1D10T-level stepthrough to get done what I need to do.

Instead of upgrading to 10.10, I decided to install everything from scratch. Since the installation I can't make Firefox and Thunderbird work with the profiles I have always used on an NFS share. Locally Everything seems to work fine, but when I use the profiles on my NFS server I get in trouble. With Thunderbird I can read the email that is already there, but I can't get new one. It seems to hang during the connection. I can also write Drafts, and save them. RSS seems to work too. With Firefox I get the error "the bookmark and history system will not be functional because one of Firefox's files is in use by another application". When I try to open a url it doesn't work. Both applications start very slowly, but only when I open the profiles on the NFS share. I can happily read and write files on that share, so it can't be an access problem. I have a 64 bit machine, and I am using the Firefox 3.6.11 32 bit that I downloaded separately. Thunderbird is the one coming with the distribution.

All of a sudden, when I click on a link in Thunderbird, nothing happens, where it used to open a tab in Firefox. Left clicking and selecting "open in browser" also doesn't work.I checked in Firefox to make sure I had it set as my default browser, but when I click on an html file it opens in Konquerer. Is there another setting I should change?

I am a Mepis 8 user and I use Thunderbird to access my Gmail account. I can receive mail (pop3) no problem, but the SMTP server is not found, so I can't send Emails unless I log in to Gmail. It's especially confusing as I have the exact same setup on the WinXP box and it works perfectly.

So, approx 2 weeks ago, clicking on links in Thunderbird stopped working. There is no response in the browser whether it is open or not. I am able to paste the links to the browser just fine. Being congenitally lazy, I would rather just click them. I have upgraded to the latest version of Thunderbird and have the same issue. I have tried using Swiftfox, Firefox and Opera - all give the same non-response.
Am not getting any error messages, the links just do not open. Can't find any settings relevant to this issue.Any bright ideas out there?

Thanks to Lucid not working properly on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips, had to re-install Karmic on my mum's computer.I saved all the data from her old install and I ve managed to get all her old emails from thunderbird, but I cant import her address book.In Thunderbird/tools/import/addressbooks it only allows importing of LDIF, .tab, .csv and .txt files, but I cant find any of these files in any of the Thunderbird, .Thunderbird, Mozilla-Thunderbird or Mozilla folders in Home folder or anywhere, all I can find is "abook.mab" which IS supposed to be her address book, but when I try and import it the entries are blank and/or indecipherable (prob cos not a compatible file type).
Its one of those "simple" things to do, thats taken hours and hours of time, but that I cant actually find out how to do.

I had a portable apps version of Thunderbird (windows) that runs off a thumb drive and wanted to take the settings and transfer them to my Thunderbird that's on my Linux computer.
This is what I did:
First, I installed thunderbird on my Ubuntu 10.04 Linux box and opened it, and closed it (so that it would create the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder in the user account).
Then, I renamed the linux /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder to .thunderbird_ORIGINAL
Then, I created a new /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder
Then, I took the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableDataprofile folder and copied it to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
Then, I looked into the /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL folder and wrote down the name of the folder with the ".default" extension.
Then, I renamed the profile folder (that came from the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableData folder) "<name-I-wrote-down>.default".
And then, I copied the profiles.ini folder from /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.
I opened up Thunderbird in Linux and everything seems fine! (I'll definitely be keeping a backup just in case)
My question is: is this fine and dandy, or a recipe for disaster?

I run version 10.04 GNOME. My problem is (after substantial searching) that I need to have both users ('juliusz' and 'sarah') running Thunderbird but with the same profile (settings, email, accounts etc. preferably of 'juliusz'). The only results on the internet are share Thunderbird between Windows and Ubuntu.
I have two users juliusz and sarah. I need either of them to have the same profile, always in synch whenever they logon to own account. When I tried to edit sarah's /home/sarah/.mozilla-thunderbird/profile.ini by inserting: Path=/home/juliusz/.mozilla-thunderbird/xxxxxxx.default after i run Thunderbird for 'sarah' I get message: "Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, or restart your system." I checked with "ps aux" there is no Thunderbird running in sarah's session. There is no Thunderbird running in juliusz's session when I reloged to juliusz.

I installed Thunderbird via the opensuse "1 click install". the installation ran smoothly, but now a click on the Thunderbird icon does not activate any mail client; the only success is that Thunderbird icon jumps joyfully and then disappears.
