I have 7.04 edubuntu from our government as I am a teacher and I got laptop. So I am asking can I upgrade to 7.10 or some newer version?? If not at all, why is not working the repo sites, I mean I don't get why is not working the upgrade manager.
View 4 RepliesI just did a dist upgrade on two computers. One of them was fine with the network manager, but the other, netbook, now refuses to start the service. If I do service start network-manager I'll get a message saying a process started, but it must be immediately dying since I can't find the pid or any network manager processes at all. I looked at daemon.log and noticed it was complaining about nm-system-settings.cfg not being there. One question I have is how is this not getting generated? It's not in the deb so somehow it must be generated. I put a fake file in there and even put some data from a pastebin I found online that looked promising, and the message in daemon.log went away but the pids were still dropping off.
I have many problems with nm-applet, but I don't want to go into it so much now that the service can't start. The problem I do see popping up is something like: ** (nm-applet:2622): WARNING **: <WARN> applet_dbus_manager_start_service(): Could not acquire the NetworkManagerUserSettings service. Message: 'Connection ":1.24" is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerUserSettings" due to security policies in the configuration file' (had to pull message from online, don't remember the exact message) I've tried installing and reinstalling, doing a purge uninstall. Next thing I was going to try is an aptitude uninstall of all of the dependencies in case something got weird in the upgrade.
I have recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 from Ubuntu 10.10. After the upgrade, I wanted to do a system cleanup using Synaptic Package Manager. After, I have marked a package for removal, the "Apply" button is still shaded, i.e., I am not able to click the "Apply" button. The "Apply" button is still not functional even I am able to download and install packages.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIt started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!
I am trying to upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 beta. I tried ALT-F2 & ``update - manager -d'' but when Upate Manager opened, it did not give me the option of upgrading to 10.04 beta.

If I use the shell and apt-get I get the following message: The following packages have been kept back: firefox-gnome-support update-manager
The system is functioning well, but these 2 packages just linger as I process probably hundreds of lucid upgraded packages.
How did it work out? What model machine are you using?
Just wanted to get some idea of stability/functionality.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and 2.6.35-27-generic. When I run the Upgrade Manager, the 'Distribution Upgrade' window pops up and in bold letters reads 'Running partial upgrade'.
The next line reads '>Preparing to upgrade' and sits there. Mean while, the process begins to perform a great deal of constant hard drive activity. The window's horizontal activity bar reads 'Calculating the changes' at the bottom of the 'Distribution Upgrade' window.
Using Lubuntu 10.10. I uninstalled Apache Server (it was once installed). But the update manager is cites many new Apache updates that I need. But again Apache is not installed anymore. Synaptic says it's not installed. I have a checker for orphaned packages it says nothing about Apache. Why does the updater say this? Maybe there's a "residue" of Apache somewhere?

View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is my fourth on-line upgrade from Gutsy (started with Dapper ...) all the previous one went without a hitch !
So I was pretty confident this afternoon upgrading my Lenovo laptop from 9.04 to 9.10.
At one point during the install, I got error messages and was offer to do a "Partial Install". I accepted, different things happened, rebooted. Update manager came on with again the partial update pop-up. Accepted it again, it downloaded more files, rebooted, partial upgrade window again but it failed immediately.
The network connection was gone, clicking on the network icon I got a message that the network manager is not running.
I cannot check or uncheck the "network unabled" choice.
However, 9.10 is running, slow and weird, but no network connection so I cannot try to finish the "partial upgrade"
Every time I reboot the Update manager pops up.
Trying to boot any previous version in "grub" fails right away saying it is unable to mount the drives ...
Is there a way to start the Network Manager from a terminal ?
Basically, the update manager pops up and... nothing happens. It checks for updates but doesn't indicate upgrade availability.Running other commands like apt-get distribution-upgrade also doesn't do anything.
I think the problem is the fact that I've installed a bunch of software from rep's and ppa's via ubuntu-tweak that are more recent than the ones in Ubuntu's rep, but I can't been sure.Also, I've deactivated all third party rep's and ppa's, but I still have a bunch of software installed via those sources.
I'm trying to do an online upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04 using the update manager. Since update manager did not indicate that there was and upgrade, I used the update-manager --devel-release command to initiate the process. The upgrade stops during while looking for channels with the following error message:

E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead. I don't believe this to be a network problem because it fails in the same place every time. I don't see the entry for debian-installer in the Release file which I believe is why the error is occuring, however, I'm not sure what to do about it. It seems like something is pointed to the wrong place. I've maintained this system with update-manager for several years and never had a problem.
I was so impressed by the screen-shots of 10.04 LTS that i wanted upgrade via the update manager( am using karmic 9.10).Everything went well with downloading the new packages till the point of installation of downloaded packages. Halfway through the installation power went off and when i restarted the system it was stuck at some point with the message
Code: mount: nothing to mount in /dev or something like that. Then i restarted the system in recovery mode and ran "dpkg" to fix broken packages hoping it would fix the issue.It did to some extent that i was type the problem here through the affected system.
The problem is i couldn't send the crash report the first time around and i can't get hold of it now.My system is somewhere between karmic and lucid ("About Ubuntu" shows as karmic and System Monitor shows it as lucid").So i how do i get a clean installation of lucid?
I'm noticing that maybe twice a month the Update Manager is asking me to upgrade my kernel. Currently it's asking me to move to 2.6.32.24.25. Is this the smart thing to do? Are these primarily securtiy updates to the kernel?

On my desktop I have upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 64bit and my Modem is automatically Identified by Network Manager and after giving username and password I can automatically to internet without dialing throung wvdial.
Now I just want to know that how can I upgrade my network manager in Lucid to the version in Maverick. Is this even possible to do without breaking my system?
I started the upgrade to 10.10 and now the upgrade process is trying to get some input in the orange window. Problem is I can't bring that window to the front because metacity crashed. When I try to start metacity from a console it dumps core. How do I continue the upgrade?

I've tried searching and can't seem to find anything related, but was hoping this might make some sense to someone.
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 desktop edition on one of my machines and its connected to internet via network proxy with username/password authentication enabled.
I've provided proxy details in Synaptic Package Manager and also in System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy. I can see any new updated libraries when I check Update Manager, but somehow I do not see the notice of availability of Ubuntu 10.10 and hence not able to upgrade.
On my home laptop (Dell Inspiron 700m) which connects to internet directly and over there I was able to upgrade to 10.10
So I think there is some problem with respect to update manager where it cant see the new release available behind proxy.
The strangest thing is going on. I just did a fresh install of 9.10; however, apt-get upgrade returns different results then Update Manger found under System > Administration > update Manager. In addition, the apt-get upgrade method excludes a few upgrades from being installed. These upgrades are bind9, and a few for FireFox. Has anyone run into this issue recently?
View 4 Replies View RelatedUbuntu Studio (no idea what version, no idea how to find out) Update Manager has been saying 10.04 is ready for quite some time, but I cannot install the upgrade. The first time, more than a month ago, it had problems with Java and aborted. This time it couldn't find a repository in NZ so it threw up its (virtual) hands and gave up. Should I even try to upgrade? I keep installing maintenance and security updates (except Adobe Flash Player which Adobe cannot identify). It does most of what I want it to do. Does 10.04 (or 10.10) really matter? Assuming I try for US 10.04 LTS again, how do I get it past its problems?

Went to the settings to try out "Normal Release" under Release upgrade options, but nothing shows up on 10.10. When can I expect 10.10 start getting reflected within Update Manager?
1. Update-manager panel icon changes into do-not-enter traffic sign.
2. If you want to re-install Update-manager using Synaptic, then Synaptic opens for a while and then closes by itself.
Upgrade Manager wants to remove 'gnome' & 'gnome-desktop-environment,' and doesn't want to replace it with anything else. It appears that this will completely hose my Gnome UI and 'force' me to use Unity.
Is this what's going to happen?
