Ubuntu :: Thunderbird Won't Start After Upgrade?

Jul 7, 2010

Tonight I did the usual apt-get update/upgrade and it installed a newer version of Thunderbird.

Synaptic says the version I have is 3.0.5+build2+nobin.

Their is a bug [URL] that refers to an upstream directory which I don't have. Apparently some recent upgrades have produced some kind of circular link. I am not sure whether that is the problem I have but this is supposed to give the answer. Not sure whether it does but here is some terminal output:

kgw@kgw-desktop:~$ ls -ld ~/.*thunderbird*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 kgw kgw 22 2010-04-22 20:48 /home/kgw/.mozilla-thunderbird -> /home/kgw/.thunderbird
drwx------ 3 kgw kgw 4096 2009-12-08 14:34 /home/kgw/.thunderbird

When I click on the Thunderbird icon, there is an item that appears in the bar at the bottom of my screen that says Thunderbird and it produces a tiny vertical bar at the top of my screen that can be dragged into a an application window that is blank.

Oddly, when I asked firefox to send a link (forgetting that thunderbird wasn't working) it popped up the usual box to send an email and let me send it. The main screen of thunderbird still won't start.

Ubuntu :: Thunderbird Will Not Start After 3.1 Upgrade Using Ubuntuzilla

Jul 4, 2010

Today I received a pop-up from Ubuntuzilla indicating that version 3.1 of Thunderbird was available. So I started Ubuntuzilla and updated Thunderbird to version 3.1, as I did successfully before with previous version updates. The update proceeded normally, without any error. However, now Thunderbird does start. I get the "Starting Thunderbird" in the bottom status bar for a few seconds, then nothing! I checked with Synaptic Package Manager, but it only indicates version 3.0.4

Problem is Thunderbird is not running as also confirmed with the terminal output below Rebooting didn't solve, nor did uninstalling Thunderbird, rebooting and reinstalling.

Fedora :: Firefox And Thunderbird Would Not Start Properly

Jan 10, 2010

I just upgraded my laptop from fedora 10 to 12, in spite of all kinds of hassles I am nearly able to use the system. Except I noticed that whenever I connect to the ethernet via NetworkManager, both of firefox(3.5.6) and thunderbird(3.0) won't start a window and there is no error output. The programs just hang there so that I have to kill them explicitly. The strange thing is that if I just disconnect the network then they can start up without problem. I can then reconnect to the network and both of them work fine.

I installed some updates this morning to my F14-64 system. Both Thunderbird and Thunderbird-lightning were updated. Now, Thunderbird won't start at all. The process is running, but no window ever appears. The only thing I've tried at this point is running 'thunderbird -safe-mode' from the command line to disable all plugins, but the result is the same as just running 'thunderbird' -- it just hangs. It doesn't *appear* to be a plugin problem

Ubuntu Installation :: Thunderbird Segmentation Fault After Upgrade To 10.04?

May 13, 2010

Since upgrading to 10.04 Thunderbird doesn't work properly. It is Thunderbird 3.04. It works for locally-created users but exits with 'segmentation fault' when the user is from LDAP. In the latter case, the home directory is local, created by pam_mkhomedir. I get the same problem with a newly-installed 10.04 system.

I cannot understand why it worked fine in 9.10 but not in 10.04. I set "set -x" in the thunderbird script and here is the trace from that:

$ thunderbird
+ moz_libdir=/usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.4
+ found=0
+ progname=/usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.4/thunderbird
+ dirname /usr/lib/thunderbird-3.0.4/thunderbird

Ubuntu Installation :: Safe To Upgrade To Thunderbird 3.1 Yet? (Lucid)

Jul 16, 2010

I notice the repository Thunderbird version is 3.0.5 but 3.1 is already released. I'm on 3.0.4 and it took me forever to find a compatible version of the Lightning extension, which I really need. Now I am afraid to upgrade to anything older than 3.1 because it might break Lightning, and I'm afraid to upgrade to 3.1 because maybe there's a reason it's not in the official repository yet (and because who knows if the latest version of Lightning really is compatible with the latest version of Thunderbird). My question is, is anybody out there currently running Thunderbird 3.1 with the Lightning extension on Kubuntu or Ubuntu 10.04, AMD64? Have you found it to be stable?

OpenSUSE :: Firefox And Thunderbird: Upgrade - Restore From Prior HD?

Aug 17, 2010

I had FF and TB running on a desktop computer which was on Suse 11.0. That computer has gone to the Great Interrupt in the Sky. The hard drive still works, and I can hook it up to the replacement (laptop) with an eSATA cable. Thus, all of my email, settings, bookmarks, etc are sitting there waiting to go back to work.

My new laptop is on Suse 11.2, with the FF version which came on the DVD (from Linux Pro Magazine in February). I would like to A), load the latest vers of FF and TB onto this laptop, and B), move my older FF and TB stuff to run here. I am little more than the ignorant appliance operator so derided by Linux gurus in the "Why New Users Give Up" thread. I want to learn more, but my primary need is PRODUCTIVITY, so what I need is an 1D10T-level stepthrough to get done what I need to do.

Ubuntu :: Can't Import Address Book From Thunderbird To Thunderbird

Aug 26, 2010

Thanks to Lucid not working properly on i845, i855 and other 8xx chips, had to re-install Karmic on my mum's computer.I saved all the data from her old install and I ve managed to get all her old emails from thunderbird, but I cant import her address book.In Thunderbird/tools/import/addressbooks it only allows importing of LDIF, .tab, .csv and .txt files, but I cant find any of these files in any of the Thunderbird, .Thunderbird, Mozilla-Thunderbird or Mozilla folders in Home folder or anywhere, all I can find is "abook.mab" which IS supposed to be her address book, but when I try and import it the entries are blank and/or indecipherable (prob cos not a compatible file type).

Its one of those "simple" things to do, thats taken hours and hours of time, but that I cant actually find out how to do.

Software :: Importing Thunderbird Settings From Portable Apps Thunderbird

Sep 13, 2010

I had a portable apps version of Thunderbird (windows) that runs off a thumb drive and wanted to take the settings and transfer them to my Thunderbird that's on my Linux computer.

This is what I did:

First, I installed thunderbird on my Ubuntu 10.04 Linux box and opened it, and closed it (so that it would create the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder in the user account).

Then, I renamed the linux /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder to .thunderbird_ORIGINAL

Then, I created a new /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder

Then, I took the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableDataprofile folder and copied it to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.

Then, I looked into the /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL folder and wrote down the name of the folder with the ".default" extension.

Then, I renamed the profile folder (that came from the windows e:ThunderbirdPortableData folder) "<name-I-wrote-down>.default".

And then, I copied the profiles.ini folder from /home/<username>/.thunderbird_ORIGINAL to the /home/<username>/.thunderbird folder.

I opened up Thunderbird in Linux and everything seems fine! (I'll definitely be keeping a backup just in case)

My question is: is this fine and dandy, or a recipe for disaster?

Any easy way to go back to 10.04? Or should I just reinstall 10.04 from the CD-ROM and forget about 10.10 before it's stable?

Ubuntu :: (GNOME) Thunderbird For Two Users - "Thunderbird Is Already Running But Is Not Responding"

Sep 9, 2010

I run version 10.04 GNOME. My problem is (after substantial searching) that I need to have both users ('juliusz' and 'sarah') running Thunderbird but with the same profile (settings, email, accounts etc. preferably of 'juliusz'). The only results on the internet are share Thunderbird between Windows and Ubuntu.

I have two users juliusz and sarah. I need either of them to have the same profile, always in synch whenever they logon to own account. When I tried to edit sarah's /home/sarah/.mozilla-thunderbird/profile.ini by inserting: Path=/home/juliusz/.mozilla-thunderbird/xxxxxxx.default after i run Thunderbird for 'sarah' I get message: "Thunderbird is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Thunderbird process, or restart your system." I checked with "ps aux" there is no Thunderbird running in sarah's session. There is no Thunderbird running in juliusz's session when I reloged to juliusz.

Ubuntu :: GDM Doesn't Start After Upgrade?

I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04. While it seemed to go fine, GDM won't start. (Instead the Plymouth bootloader just displays the splash screen continuously.) I can get in through a virtual terminal, but starting GDM via the init script does not do anything. I also tried this:

Code:

I tried running sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm, but this did not change anything. Logged in from the virtual terminal I can run startx and get the desktop, but obviously I would like to have the login manager working.

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From 8.04 To 10.04 - Won't Start Up

Oct 13, 2010

Since I noticed a new version of Ubuntu (10) was out and I was still running an old version (8.04) I thought about upgrading. With the update manager is selected update to 10.04 and everything went on it's way.

During the process I got asked if I wanted to update the GRUB loader. Since I also use Windows and with a previous update of GRUB I couldn't start into it anymore I selected, "keep this version" (which I think is now causing this trouble).

The upgrade completed and restarted, however, Ubuntu now doesn't start anymore.
I get prompted with:

mount: mounting none on /dev failed: No such device udevd(896): error getting socket: Invalid argument ...

edit: I started Ubuntu with the live CD and typed gedit /booot/grub/menu.lst which gave me a blank file. Is that normal?
