Ubuntu :: Webcam Studio Crashes On Play
Jun 14, 2010I'm trying to use Webcam Studio as a way to feed videos to sites like ustream and ChatRoulette. I've set the source as a video, but when I hit 'Play,' the program crashes.

View 2 RepliesI'm running Ubuntu Studio 9.10 64-bit, and have a problem with Audacity version 1.3.9. My sound card is a Sound Blaster Live Value.
Whenever I highlight a region of an audio file and select Play, the playback skips through the first few of seconds of the selection, (mostly) replacing them with a burst of staticky noise. I can hear very brief snippets of the correct audo underneath the static. It skips through this section far faster than real-time - i.e., it skips to say, the 10-second mark after only 2 or 3 seconds of noise. If I play the selected area in a loop, the noise and skipping only happen the first time through. The second and subsequent passes are fine.
Needless to say, this makes precise audio editing much more difficult. I've tried Googling it, and haven't seen any reports of similar problems from anyone else.
I have found a few threads regarding this issue but none seem to be exactly what I've got or were too old to re-open the thread.
Ubuntu 11.04
Skype 2.2.0.35-1
Logitech Quickcam
Logitech C310 720HD webcam
Basic: Video call in Skype using the C310 causes the PC to crash at random times during the session. The quickcam seems to be ok, just an awful experience. Thought it might be a pulseaudio problem so did the following:
added autospawn = no to .pulse/client.conf
killall pulseaudio
Restarted Skype
Changed audio settings in Skype to use MB chip ICH5
Restarted pulseaudio -D
No difference (if anything crashes quicker) except the CPU load is halved.
The pc freezes and is unresponsive. lights on keyboard flash.
I have no idea if this is sound or video card related.
Below is a link to a screen shot.

I was just wondering, is there any way to play a video/animation as a WebCam? I'd like to use that with Skype or Chatroulette.com etc
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?
We have a Centos 5.4 system with V4L installed. xawtv displays the web cam's output fine, but I need to find a way to embed live video from the web cam in a web page (Apache is also installed). I want to play the video in such a way that the viewers do NOT need any special software other than a standard web browser (Firefox, IE, etc.)

Same thing happens with Listen and Rhythmbox, but with a segmentation fault.
Amarok doesn't even get past the splash screen, but that's more or less okay because I'd rather stick with gnome.
Guayadeque is the only decent music player that works, and even it isn't without its issues. Audacious also works, but I don't like Audacious(the whole "one big playlist" system... ew).
Of course if I had my way I'd skip gnome music players entirely and go with foobar2000, but wouldn't you know it, that doesn't work either. [URL]
I'm using 10.04 beta, but these problems were present on 9.10 too.
When run from the CLI I get an error message saying something about DVD regions. Never seen that before. MPlayer plays DVDs okay, Totem can't play DVDs but no biggie. how I can get VLC to play DVDs without crashing.

I'm running Jessie on an AMD64 with an ATI Radeon HD 7770 card. I have installed the fglrx driver. When I try to play a movie with vlc, it crashes with the following error:
Xlib: extension "NV-GLX" missing on display ":0".
I have been trying to play this game dawn-rpg.sourceforge.net and it immediately crashes whenever I try to play sounds. The only other sound in this system I have are the sounds for the bash/dash terminal.
So my questions are:-
a. How do I test if the sound system is working alright.
b. Do I need to increase some kind of priorty/niceness to sound systems to make sure they get the available resources (cpu, memory ) whatever it needs ?
On the same topic, while I was searching on the Net I got this link http://rosegardenmusic.com/wiki/low-latency_kernels .
I know this is actually for people who want to make sounds/music but can some of these ideas/instructions be useful for me as well ?
I'm within Firefox and start playing ..... movies Firefox crashes. Thats not the worst of it however; the process locks up the whole system and I have to reboot. I attempt the kill it with now luck. Killing the PPID doesn't help because it got to 1. I even looked a pstree to kill parent processes without any luck. I'm like WTF. Firefox crushes with the "ZL" in the line when running the ps command also. I'm going to uninstall Adobe flash and reinstall it to see if that helps at all. This is the only time I have every had this type of issue.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter many days of trying to tweak Ubuntu 9.10 desktop i386. This subject will focus on my dvd drive. ...Here is what I have done, but I'm not sure what I did or still need to do, or to do different. ...
Basically the problem is, I can't play store bought DVDs, but I can play my copies of them.
When using MDPlayer that I added to Ubuntu, I can play the copies of my store bought DVDs, but not the originals. However, when using Ubuntu 9.10's movie player, it wont do anything and I'll have to do a force quit to close it.
I learned that this may because there is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution, as I'm sure you already knew.
...Yet, Most people have worked around these issues.
I came across the Medibuntu site: [url]
Running the Terminal, I added the bash command that adds Medibuntu's repositiry to Ubuntu. It also adds Medibuntu's GPG key to the keyring.
(The sudo wget - etc etc etc --quiet update)
Then I jumped down to the... "This command should be run in the Terminal, after adding the repository:" ...And did that. (sudo sed -e 's/ etc etc etc /medibuntu.list)
i just installed 10.10 on my girls laptop (Acer Aspire 5735z) hoping it would fix the old problem i had with playing real dvd's. it didnt. it keeps saying "Could not read from Resource". when i try with VLC is say "Could not read from file". but if i put in a burned movie, it plays fine. i checked and it has libdvdcss2, libdvdnav4, and libdvdread4 installed. i get the same problems with my laptop (toshiba portege m400 tablet) which runs fedora 13.

However, clicking the play button does nothing.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've had this problem on a few flash games (a couple of EA's sports management games on Facebook, and the Pokemon Dream World.) When I first use them everything's fine, but as I continue coming back to them, they seem to run a little slower each time. Ultimately in the case of the former two it got so bad that they were unusual.
Why is this happening? If they were slow from the start I could understood, but what could be making them go wrong on repeated plays?
