Ubuntu :: Install Studio Straight From An Iso File?
Feb 17, 2011
I tried to install Ubuntu Studio straight from an iso file, didn't work. Unetbootin made a boot option but did not install (cannot find CD error) so I decided to use wubi and just install ubuntu then download the ubuntu studio packages when everything was done.
So Ubuntu is now on the machine (Dell Dimension 8250) and of course so is Windows XP Pro, and even after uninstalling Unetbootin the boot option for the install is still there. I guess I'd like to get ubuntu working properly with all the right drivers and have it as my main OS. No dual boot, just Ubuntu.

If you can access Suse Studio here is thlink to the buildLFS Host - SUSE GalleryGoogle hasn't been friendly and neither has a search on these forums, I don't know which man to read so a finger in the right dirrection (preferably not the middle) would be nice as far as that goesRight now the yast live installer trips up at %84 while saving the boot loader configuration and displays a popup that says An error occurred during initrd creation. /sbin/mkinitrd: illegal optionI then press enter to acknowledge the message and the installation continues without a hitch.
When I go to boot up (no other os installed) grub says it cant find the file initrd-2.6.34.7-0.5-defaultIf you boot the live cd again you can mount the boot partition and youll find a broken symlink called initrd that islooking for the missing file above.Like I said above, if it an obvious fix, all I need is some direction, I don't mind reading. (been doing that all day)If you need more specifics Id be happy to supply, I'm just not sure whats relevant and don't want to bloat the post.

I'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?

I am fairly inexperienced with Linux. I'm good with windows and PCs in general. I've been wanting to setup a Linux environment for teaching myself some programming so I downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 to install on my main Windows desktop.
I have two internal HDDs and an external HDD. Each of the internals is 160GB and the external is 1TB. I have Windows on the drive in SATA0. I split the drive in SATA1 into 3 partitions. I Windows Disk Management to shrink the NTFS partition to 100GB for storage. I used gParted to create a 2GB swap partition the rest is a ext4 partition So sda1 is NTFS, sdb1 is swap, sdb2 is ext4, and sdb3 is NTFS, and sdc1 is NTFS
I mounted sdb2 as root and installed Ubuntu there. I chose the manual option for the installation as the install alongside Windows option only showed my external HDD (sdc). I wasn't sure where to place the boot loader so I tried to overwrite the Windows boot loader on sda but that failed with an error about no file system available or compatible. I figured Grub2 doesn't work on NTFS......

I have a multi-drive system:
C: RAID 10 (WD 500 GB x4)
D: Data Drive (WD 1.5 TB)
E: Back-up ( Seagate 3 TB)
I shrunk the 3TB drive (E: ) to give me a free unallocated 60GB. Boot to F15 live DVD and did a custom install of the partition.Using the 60GB unallocated partition, use 500 MB /boot, 2GB /swap, and the remaining for /root and chose Fedora bootloader The installation completed successfully but after reboot it just goes straight to Windows 7-64. I have a AMD Phenom II X6 1100T 3.3Ghz with 8 GB DDR3 memory. RAID controller is a HighPoint RocketRAID 4320 PCI-Express and the other drives are connected to HighPoint RocketHybrid 1220 PCI-Express 2.0 SATA III controller. Only the DVD-ROM and Blue-Ray drives are plugged into the mobo's nVidai SATA controller.
I'm not sure if its the drive configuration is causing the problem or Grub was not written to the MBR but apparently it wont let me boot to F15. I'm also running 4 monitors with 2 x Radeon XFX HD-697A-CNDC HD 6970 but only one video card (2 monitors) are working. During boot to the live DVD I notice that it switches from each pair of monitors but not all 4 and only after the login screen that only my 2 monitors are working. I tried the monitor detect and it only see 2 monitors.
Ps. I just love F15 Gnome3. I'm moving from Ubuntu 11.04 Natty.

I am currently running slackware 13.37 in virtualbox on my Dell 1558. I would really like to install it for real to my HDD to get the speed benefit. My only way to connect to the internet is via my internal Dell UMTS modem. Will this work after the install or do I need to take some precautions before the time and download the right apps files now while I have access?

I have not used Linux in some time (I used to use it back when suse 8 was still out and mandrake linux was still around).
Recently I decided to give it another go and downloaded both the LiveCD and the DVD (both 64-bit versions AND 32-bit versions).
I have a Dell Studio 1747 Laptop (with the 17.3 screen). It has an Intel i7 1.6GB processor, 4GB ram and an ATI Radeon 4650.
My problem is that the LiveCD just will not work. It gets to its boot menu, but when I press enter on the boot KDE live CD option, it will either try to boot and then freeze, or it will boot, you will hear that startup music, but the display will go blank. Could it be that it cannot handle my display or the graphics card on the laptop?
Unfortunately I have Windows 7, which doesn't seem to be supported by the windows installer on the DVD, so I can't test if it would work that way.
I must admit that ubuntu has given me the same grief, and so I wonder if maybe the laptop isn't yet supported properly by linux yet?
how I could use a live system or something, to at least try linux for a few things (I would need to retain windows for games and stuff). I'm not into resizing partitions and things, so I would prefer something else that could work.

I attempted to install nvidia-current 195.36.24 from Synaptic for an Nvidia GTX 460. It didn't appear to work and I want to fully un-install all Nvidia drivers and do the 'official' (convoluted) Nvidia procedure of logging out of x etc: - [URL] The issue is; I tried to remove via Synaptic, but when I restart the system I get an error stating: - 'Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode. The following error was encountered. You may need to update you configuration to solve this. (EE) Failed to load module "NVidia" (module does not exist, 0) (EE) No drivers available.
This is actually the error that kept appearing and made me want to remove everything. My question is: - Can I just go ahead and install the 'official' Nvidia driver, even though the 'startup' appears to be getting some kind of reference from somewhere? I understand that I'll have to remove the Nouveau driver as well some how. . .

I'm trying to make my USB bootable with the OpenSUSE 11.4 64 bit KDE iso image. When I open up SUSE Studio Image Writer (by following the Windows instructions here), it doesn't find the .iso image on my desktop. When I'm selecting the image, it's looking for a .raw file. Do I have to do some trickery to change the .iso image to a .raw?

I would like to know if someone was able to upgrade/fresh install ubuntu 10.10 maverick on a dell studio hybrid. First I've tried to upgrade. Everything went well, until the system started. First thing to notice is that the orange was so bright that was almost impossible to look at the monitor. Not a big deal, adjusting some monitor brightness etc. Second the mouse (usb) stopped for some fraction of a second, or a second, when you click to open a program. It is annoying but it is also a problem that I could wait to find some solution.
Third and worse, it was completely impossible to see videos in vlc or other players, I've tried vlc, xine, etc, the videos was stuttered, choppy. SMPlayer was able to play them better. I've tried the solution here [URL] and it does not work at least for me. Fourth the fans went completely crazy, running as mainly when I have to use smplayer, I've found some complains about that [URL] but the solution does not apply to my computer.
Then I've tried a fresh install hoping that some of the troubles would not appear. The only trouble solved was the look and feel. Mouse the same trouble, stuttered, choppy videos on vlc, fans running all the time. And now it was impossible to install the wireless proprietary driver Broadcom sta. The only solution was to come back to Lucid. A fresh install of Lucid and mouse working ok, no troubles seeing videos in vlc, fans working absolutely normal and no troubles to install the wireless driver.

Whenever I try to use a preload ISO from susestudio.com, it takes me about 5 tries to actually get it to install. I load it up in VirtualBox, and on the screen that warns "you are about to erase all data on /dev/sda, continue?", selecting "yes" will 80% of the time cause it to think you cancelled and waits 30 seconds before rebooting. Every now and then it decides to work, but sadly that's the exception and not the rule. If it makes any difference, the appliance I'm downloading is a custom one based on openSUSE 11.4 Minimal X with GNOME 3 installed on top of it.

I was trying to install openSUSE 11.2 on Dell XPS Studio, model PP35L, but loading kernel hangs at 94%, I tried F5 for Safe Settings, No APIC, No Local ACPI, Check Installation Media, but it still hangs at 94%. Installation works fine on older computer. Is it because openSuse kernel doesn't recognize the i5 Core processor yet? If this is caused by a driver, is there a way to display the kernel messages and what would be the kernel boot options to disable loading of that driver?

After something happened in SUSE Studio, in any appliances I build the owner of /home/tux/Desktop is root which makes impossible to create desktop icons. This happens even in those appliances which previously were build normally with normal ownership (i.e. tux as owner of /home/tux/Desktop). Something changed abruptly and in all these appliances the ownership of this folder changed.

This is not strictly a Linux question, although I am interested in any Linux cautions as to what to avoid that could impact my Linux on the computer in question. I have Linux (openSUSE-11.1) setup on dual boot with MS-Vista on a Dell Studio 1537 laptop. My wife is "fed up" with Vista, and has asked that I replace Vista with WinXP on this Laptop. I would like to do this over the Christmas holiday break. The laptop's 1 year support warrantee has expired. can someone explain to me the function of the two Dell /dev/sda1 and /dev/sda2 partitions ?
This laptop was purchased with MS Vista installed, with 3 primary partitions (small /dev/sda1 (called "Dell Utility" ),10GB /dev/sda2 (unknown - appears to be some sort of Dell backup/recovery partition ? ), /dev/sda3 (MS Vista which had the remainder of the 250GB drive, although I have subsequently reduced this to 69GB ).
Again, I note /dev/sda3 is the 69GB MS Vista partition (I reduced it to 69GB when I installed Linux (openSUSE-11.1)). I also believe it may be in /dev/sda3 where I should plan on installing winXP. Currently I have openSUSE-11.1 Linux in /dev/sda4 (divided into extended partitions, with /dev/sda5 (swap), /dev/sda6 (root), and /dev/sda7 (/home) for Linux and it works well. I plan to keep openSUSE-11.1 Linux when Vista is replaced by WinXP Can I remove and merge /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, and /dev/sda3 and replace them with one partition for WinXP ?
Or am I better OFF keeping /sdev/sda1 (Dell Utility) ? and am I better off to keep /dev/sda2 (some sort of Vista ?? recovery) ? and only put winXP on /dev/sda3 ? Aside from the MBR with Grub being destroyed (when I replace Vista with winXP) is there anything else I need to be careful of wrt keeping my openSUSE-11.1 Linux install on this laptop ?
I've also sent a slightly different version of this post as a question to the Dell Support mailing list. p.s. for information, here is some output from Linux commands showing the contents:

I had no choice but to do a hard shutdown. After I turned the netbook back on everything seemed normal. It went to the login screen and everything, but after I click on my username and type in my password I just get a terminal in the top left portion of my screen.
