Server :: DHCPD Will Start In Debug But Will Not Start As A Normal Service

Jun 7, 2010

I have setup a CentOS 5.5 server as a DHCP server. That will be it's only task in a Cisco callmanger VoIP environment The DHCP server that comes with CentOS 5.5 is from ISC V3.0.5 -redhat.

The server (HP DL360) has two physical NIC's of which only NIC1 is used (ETH0)

ifconfig shows:

Code:

The interface has a fixed IP setup.

My dhcp.conf file looks like this:

Code:

When I start (try to) dhcpd via the service interface or via the prompt as

Code: service dhcpd start

I get an [FAILED] message and the following is in /var/log/messages

Code:

But when I start the DHCPD on the comamnd prompt in debug mode it looks as follows:

Code:

and /var/log/messages shows:

Code:

Why does the system ask a declaration for eth0 0.0.0.0?

Ubuntu Servers :: Tomcat 6 Won't Start At Boot But Otherwise All Is Normal

Nov 18, 2010

I'm having some trouble with Tomcat 6 after upgrading to 10.10. During the upgrade process, the installer hung while dealing with Tomcat 6, which required me to kill the upgrade and do some clean up, and then re-run `apt-get upgrade` again to get things going. This left some weirdness (like the MOTD for both 10.10 and 10.04 being shown on login), but otherwise things are OK. The only remaining problem I have is Tomcat; it simply won't start when the server is booted. The information I have:

Tomcat 6 runs normally when started with `sudo /etc/init.d/tomcat6 start`. No errors are thrown, everything works as expected.I used `rcconf` to try removing and reinstalling the rc scripts, this didn't help. I manually deleted all the rc scripts, then used `rcconf` again. The scripts all seem symlinked correctly to `/etc/init.d/tomcat6`, but it's just not coming up on boot. I ran `sudo grep "tomcat" /var/log/*.log` to see if something is appearing in the logs, but nothing of interest is there.

How can I verify that Ubuntu is even trying to start Tomcat? As this is a development box, I am not adverse to a quick + dirty solution if there's some either simple way of getting it started at boot. I'm thinking the next Ubuntu release will see me blow away the server and start it fresh, but right now I'd just like a working box

Software :: Normal To Wipe - Each Year And Start Over?

Sep 21, 2010

I am running ubuntu on several computers. One in particular runs mythbuntu and is a mythtv server and frontend.

I do the ubuntu upgrade every 6 months so that I can gain the new features and enhancements included in mythtv.

My issue is that with each upgrade seems to come more issues. For instance, this time I upgraded to the latest and greatest and now mythtv crashes every day or two. Also, since vdpau was added to the new nvidia drivers, i am unable to get it to work.

So my question is: Is it normal for you guys to do a complete reinstall when you want to go to a new version of your linux flavor of choice.

It seems that the new ubuntu (really mythbuntu) is very stable and never crashes, but it just seems to me that once you start running a few programs, they just don't upgrade well.

Fedora :: F12 - Getting Sound To Work As A Normal User - A Simple Fix?

Feb 18, 2010

If sound on F12 works as root user but not as a normal user, try this simple fix! I've been struggling to get sound working as a normal (non-root) user since F10. Until now I've had to run X as root user to get any sound out of my machine.

Sound actually works OK now for me as a normal user. Here's how I fixed the problem.

First I uninstalled pulseaudio with:# yum remove pulseaudio Then reboot back to the hardware. You might want to keep pulseaudio, but I have no need for it. PA wasn't running on my system anyway.

Running X as root user, I did the following: As a test I opened a root shell and typed the following:

[root]# alsamixer c0 That started the alsamixer OK, and all the controls were accessible.

I was looking at some Vim plugins, and I installed one called Abolish. The page from where I got it [URL] only says:

So I extracted it in ~/.vim. Now, the issue is that, if I edit a file as root, I am able to use the commands; however, when I edit a file as a normal user, these commands won't work. So... could this be a permissions issue? Or should I copy the plugin in some other directory, maybe?

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Will Not Work While Grub/windows Installed?

Aug 5, 2011

Ive been running windows 7/Ubuntu dualboot for some years now and never had any problems. Some months ago I got a new Patriot Inferno ssd. Ofc the first thing I did was to installl windows 7, it had no problems, ran fast and smooth. Then when I reinstalled grub I started to get error when trying to start windows, the logo never apeared and all I got was the message "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software"Status: 0x00.00F" "Info: The boot selection failed because a required device was inaccessible.". It does not matter what order I install windows and ubuntu in, or how many times Ive tried to reinstall grub. Windows 7 will not work while I have grub/windows installed. Right now Ive got them installed on separate drives, ubuntu on the ssd and windows on a partition on a 1tb hdd. Unfortunately I need to have windows for .net programing and gaming..

Ubuntu Installation :: Error Message: "Windows Boot Manager / Windows Failed To Start...."

Mar 30, 2011

I have a single harddisk partitioned with Ubuntu Maverick and Windows 7 installations. I installed Windows first and then Ubuntu, after resizing partitions and adding a new one for Ubuntu. Win7 did not appear in the Grub2 boot menu. I added it (sda3), but on rebooting, I get the message "BOOTMGR is missing/Press Ctrl+Alt_Del to restart".

I understand that Win7 might have put its boot manager in another partition, and sda1 had FAT. I added sda1 as another grub2 entry, but when I try that, I get the error message "Windows Boot Manager/ Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause... Status 0xc0000225/ Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible." Attached are fdisk and parted outputs; and the grub2 files I created. How do I get Windows 7 to boot up?

Installation :: Not Able To Start Fedora / Get It To Work?

Nov 14, 2010

I just installed fedora on an old laptop. After restarting, the computer just shows me a black screen, it doesn't even show the BIOS screen. If I put a CD with the fedora installation program, it sounds like its reading it, but the screen keeps being black.

Just as background, i thought this laptop had died 4 months ago when I tried to start it and then nothing happened (black screen). Today, I decided to check if it was working before throwing it to the garbage, with the fedora 13 live cd in it, and voila, in entered and I was able to install fedora. But then upon installation of fedora it just shows again the same black screen...can this be a hardware problem?
