I am running 11.4 with KDE updated to 4.6.3 and suddenly I cant start Yast or Software Manager using kickoff. It doesn't even open the dialogue to ask for root password. I see Yast appear in the panel for 15 seconds or so then it just disappears without opening a window. If I open a terminal and su to root and run yast2 it work fine.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIf I create a user with Yast using ldap than at some later point delete that users ( also using Yast ) I cannot recreate a user of the same name until I have rebooted the machine, which seems a bit excessive ! Closing and reopening Yast doesn't work, it still thinks the users exists. Even though it doesn't appear in the Yast and if you look in the ldap browser it is gone. Is there something else that need restarting ( other than the whole box )

I have an answer myself. Until OpenSuse 11.2 I could mount my samba shares by making mount.cifs and umount.cifs setuid root. Today I installed OpenSuse 11.4. Unfortunately mount.cifs isn't anymore allowed to be setuid due to security concerns. Security is not an issue in my case, so I copied the mount.cifs and umount.cifs from 11.2 to make it work again:
1. Download cifs-mount-3.4.2-1.1.3.1.x86_64.rpm from this repository (I use 64 bit):
"http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/11.2/repo/oss/suse/x86_64/"
2. Extract the files mount.cifs and umount.cifs from the rpm and copy them to /sbin
3. Make them setuid root:

I would like to allow normal users to run some root scripts (e.g the sound subsytem [alsa]) in cases sound is stuck. What is the best way to allow this to happen in opensuse? There are many ways to do that (and I do not know how to use any of them ) and I am not sure which one is more suse all right.

I also found that to run bladeenc, I have to do it in a root terminal. Is there a way to set permissions for the normal user? Firefox or any text editor work fine as normal user.

When I launch it, a window opens, a dialog (to confirm that I know what I am doing) pop-ups, I choose "Yes", the application starts to initialize, and after 0.5-1s the window is closed without any error message. So the splash occurs I put user name and password but the system try to enter and later it comes back. I try from CLI, I make startx from command line, the same situation. But this morning, after I clicked "start dns server now", everything freezed, and caps lock light on keyboard kept flashing. I rebooted laptop,it couldn't boot into run level-5 and there were few "skipped" items and "failed" items displayed.... Sorry I'm new to linux so I re-installed it this afternoon, and kept /home partition, formatted / partition.
Everything seems to be fine after re-installation, again I tried configuring a DNS server and clicked "start dns server now", but the same problem appeared, caps lock light kept flashing and I rebooted the laptop but fortunately this time it didn't fail on any items when booting
In Yast-Network Settings, I choose "use controlled with network manager", and I can connect to wireless router and browsing web, but there are no any interfaces shown in Yast-Firewall, and this time, after I clicked "start dns server now", nothing happens, dns server just won't start...
On Opensuse 11.3,a normal user could not access and modify files in other partitions as the default setting .Is there any way to give a permission to a normal user to do these things instead of do these as a root user?

I've tried deleting and re-creating the user, but to no avail.
Is there some special file that I could delete before re-creating the user?
The one that holds the (corrupted) authentication data, perhaps?
I cannot log into the normal user account after shutting down the OPENSUSE 11.1 system by cutting off electricity. The system always returns to the login page which requires to choose account id and enter passwd even when I type in correct normal user id and passwd. The root account can be used.

When I enter my normal user name and password, the screen blinks, a black page appears and after a couple of seconds I get the login screen again. I deleted /tmp files but no changes. I tried to login using command mode. So I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log into root in command mode, then ran init3, then switched user to my normal user and ran startx. It worked and I logged into my normal account, but I can not do this process every time. So, what is the problem? How can I solve this problem? I used to work with my normal user flawlessly. I installed a bunch of software and also copied some folders to my home directory, but I don't know whether these activities caused the problem or not. I'm using KDE4 under openSUSE 11.2.

I have setup a CentOS 5.5 server as a DHCP server. That will be it's only task in a Cisco callmanger VoIP environment The DHCP server that comes with CentOS 5.5 is from ISC V3.0.5 -redhat.
The server (HP DL360) has two physical NIC's of which only NIC1 is used (ETH0)

Why does the system ask a declaration for eth0 0.0.0.0?
1: I changed some settings in "local security", about file permits or something, and now I can't run Yast to fix it, not even see it. Neither can I add or remove any software. And the ugliest part is that I can't even shut down the pc. It pops up a shaking error message about authentication stuff. How do I fix this?
2: It also throws en exception whenever I try to install my monitor's driver, a HannsG, which is an .exe file. I was told I should run .exe files through Wine, but this wont work either. Is there another -and more appropriate- way to execute this files?
After a disastrous foray into LDAP I restored NIS on a very simple network run by a very simple operator. Everything now works except for YaST on the NIS master. I can't manage NIS users in YaST any more. The option 'show NIS users' is now absent from the 'filter' button up in YaST "User and Group Management" So, after following the YaST route to LDAP there seems no way back...
These are OpenSUSE 11.3 boxes and the slave NIS server can't [obviously enough] delete expired NIS users on the master, although it sees them fine. Disabling or changing NIS server or client on the Master simply restores the 'wrong' settings - nothing is erased or cleaned. How do I clean up NIS controls so YaST sees it properly? or What do I need to do to restore NIS group & user control to YaST?
I want to start VB in headless mode. It is possibe to tell VB to run the VM with a useraccount, but i will asked after his password.

I just want to be able to access and modify the files on my usb drive as a normal user. The mount command works perfectly as root but then the files that I end up copying to my home folder can only be modified as root. I only use a window manager and use just bash for file management. I just want to be able to it through the command line.

With OpenSuSE 11.2, I would have a guest account running skype, and a media account running mythtv (both users logged in at the same time using switch user). I had skype on auto answer incoming calls, and I remember watching a movie when I suddenly heard my Dad's voice appear calling my name. That was cool!
Now that I'm using OpenSuSE 11.3 (both were using KDE), skype only plays audio when that user's session is active. Switching to the media account will prevent skype from starting to play any sound. Switch back, sound is normal. If I remember correctly, now the skype audio cuts out as soon as I switch user.
I also have a tv capture card which only STARTS to captures analog audio when the media session is active, mythtv being run by the user media. Once the show is started to record with sound, we can switch users and the show continue to record with sound.
The only thing that should be configured differently from the default install is that I compiled mythtv (it wasn't available as an rpm when I upgraded to 11.3, and haven't bothered to check since).
I am running SLES10 SP2 under z/vm in z9 mainframe box. But I believe this is a linux problem instead of hardware architecture or visualization (Because previously it worked).
