View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to launch a login message in 11.3 using /etc/motd. I've searched around and seen that some users have accomplished this by editing /etc/x11/xdm/xsession.d . I want to add something along the lines of xmessage -file /etc/motd/ -center -buttons Accept -default AcceptI have tried inserting this line into a few files mentioned in posts in other forums but none seem to correlate with OpenSUSE 11.3.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to make an "alarm clock" with mpd and gxmessage. Gxmessage allows you to assign unique exit codes for its buttons to use in your script. This is what I have so far:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
vol=$1
mpc clear
mpc load alarm
[Code].....
Now I know I'm way off with the case statement, because when the alarm_message function is called within the case, both of the exit codes I assigned to the buttons (-buttons "Stop":1,"Sleep":2 ) return to their default value.
What I would like is for every time the "Sleep" button is pressed, it would pause mpc, sleep for an amount of time, play, then open gxmessage again to restart the case statement (retaining the exit codes I assigned to the buttons). Am I on the right track?
usin a command which will allow me to evaluate the performance. What i would also like to do is compare the performance over 30 minute intervals. I am thinking i can use the ps -aux command but not sure on how i would specify the time intervals. Is there another way? I really want to see the CPU, disk usuage and memory.

I've been running Debian 8 jessie at the screen's native resolution (1280x800) via the following hack: [URL]
What's bugging me is that at random intervals, my screen shuts off while the laptop is still running, forcing me to hard reset.
opensuse v11.3
linux 2.6.34.7-0.5-desktop x86_64
ati radeon hd3200 (builtin to mb)
fglrx driver - distribution-specific build
At random intervals the video output is turned off for 2 - 3 seconds giving a black screen. (I suspect the 2 - 3 second blank time is how long it takes the monitor to recover after a loss of input signal.) The interval between events can vary from 1 minute to an hour to more than a week, and recently more than a month. Sometimes I get several per hour; other times not for two weeks. Hmm, there was a kernel update in the last week or so.At one time the cause was pointed at a USB driver problem since a number of USB log entries occurred at the same time as the screen blanking. That is not the case here;here is nothing in </var/log/messages> (or the dmesg output) that is anywhere near when a screen event happens.
Once every, say, 12 hours of use, I find that the mouse cursor spontaneously becomes unresponsive. The rest of the system is fine, and it responds to the keyboard, but the mouse does nothing. I'm pretty sure this isn't a problem with the mouse itself, because when it happens I've tried unplugging the mouse and plugging in a different one, and the problem persists. The problem doesn't seem to be correlated with any particular program or type of activity. I realize that this probably isn't much to go on. The next time it happens, is there at least anything I can do by way of diagnosis?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just recently upgraded to Natty and I'm having a fairly annoying issue with Gnome and Fluxbox. There will be random intervals where I'll hit the enter key and my desktop environment will just quit out without any warning. Now this is becoming a huge nuisance because I use time tracking software for work and I essentially lose time because once the environment crashes, the time is not saved.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm doing some research into ip roaming and haven't come across a whole lot. My definition of IP roaming is the client / server changing of IP addresses on a regular basis using a pre-set number of IP addresses that both client and server have knowledge of. Specifically I'm interested in if anyone knows of any Linux applications that allow for IP address changing on regular intervals.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn summary, I am using openSUSE 11.2 x64 on an Acer laptop with a wireless AR928X card. I can connect to my WEP-secured network when I boot up. After some time (it might be minutes, it might be hours), I am prompted for my WEP password again. This never works, despite being the one which gets me on-line at start-up!. The only solution is a reboot. The problem is intermittent and doesn't seem to depend on my on-line activity. I have tried the following with the same result:
KNetworkManager
Traditional using IFUP
Enabling / disabling IPv6 support
I tried installing the compat-wireless package through YaST and then managed to get no internet connection at all. Went back to KNetworkManager and things "worked" again until I was prompted for the WEP code. I have openSUSE 11.2 x64 working on my office laptop without problem and can connect to my home network without any problem. My issues are with my personal laptop. I have reached the stage of booting into Windows 7 as my default option so that I can access the internet reliably. What I can do to diagnose and repair the problem - could it be that the card is going into powersave mode? If so, how do I stop that happening? I'd prefer to be on openSUSE but need to be able to rely on the internet.
Banshee is, at seemingly random intervals, emptying any playlist I have imported (as .pls generated by Rhythmbox). The playlists I build in Banshee directly are not suffering this emptying problem. (There is one imported playlist, of some 30+, which has not yet emptied but I see nothing special about it.)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am currently running debian lenny on an old mini ITX box (1GHZ 1GB ram OS on a 16GB CF card, 4 X 1TB sata drives) as a file server on my home network. I have modified /etc/inittab to auto log in a standard user, start X and start fluxbox. I would like the system to then start a couple of VM's using virtual Box but as this is not a high spec box I would like to start these automatically at 5 min intervals and about 5 min after the auto log in.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how i can achieve this or alternativley monitor the processor load and start each VM in sequence as the porcessor load drops below 20%.
I have added some executable scripts to /etc/cron.daily but don't get the stdout/stderr output from them as mail (or anywhere else I have found). At least one of them is running (because I can see that it has added a file to the disk).
The peculiar thing is that I do get the output from /etc/cron.daily/0logwatch (part of the logwatch package) as an email each day.
The MAILTO line in /etc/crontab is "MAILTO=root" (unchanged from default). Same for /etc/anacrontab.
I do have an alias at the end of /etc/aliases which redirects root's mail to my own account, but this alias works fine for mail I send manually. (It also appears to work fine for the output from the file /etc/cron.daily/0logwatch.)
It seems that cron is not upgrading my Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Server, no GUI installed. I changed /etc/crontab and watched apt running:
Code:
ps -A | grep apt
showed it for a long time,
Code:
sudo tcpdump tcp
showed communication with canonical sites,
but:
Code:
top
did not show any apt using CPU

I put in my cron entries to run my backup script which rsyncs my data to my 2nd drive, however on a hunch I checked my backup drive which mounts automatically via fstab and I realize it had not ran in a while. I checked cron and there were no entries for it. I got to wondering if I should ever be worried about a cron update coming down and over-writing my existing cron file with the backup entries in it to run.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have set up a cron in /var/spool/cron/root

I can see in /var/log/cron that it is running every 15 minutes but it has no effect. It is not doing the commands in the bash script.
If I run /usr/bin/phplist.sh right in the shell it works great.
I am running a headless Ubuntu 10.04 server with the 2.6.32-28-generic kernel. For what I can figure out no single direct cause I get a high load average and the following syslog output at random intervals. Generally the load average will drop back down to normal however the kernel errors will still continue What little I have been able to find has pointed to memory issues. I am not totaly convinced this is the cause as the server will be showing >50% free when the errors are happening.

I'd like to set up a shell script that will send various emails at regular intervals through gmail. I'm sure that there is some sort of text-based email client out there, but I'd like to do this with cron or anacron. I know a little bit of shell scripting but am definitely not great at it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a php script that checks versions of a remote stock file every 15 minutes. When it discovers that a new version is available it downloads the new file and runs it through a series of scripts that prepare it for an e-commerce application. It takes about an hour to import the file and process it. Otherwise, it echos "file on remote host not newer than local file". The stock file is updated every 3 or four hours and it's never at the same time. So we would like to run this script every 5, 10, or 15 minutes to make sure we have updated files.
So what happens when my php script finds a new file and takes an hour to do its work? Will the cron be activated three more times during this span? In other words, will it keep starting over even if its still running from a previous cron? Is there a way to stop the cron from running while the file download and processing occur, and then resume when its finished?

I am trying to set up a script that uses SCP and will run via cron to go out 3 nights a week and pull down the zip files that are created of my website on my hosting server. I am having trouble setting up the SCP script that will automate this. I don't want to have to enter a password each time. I know this can be done with public/private keys but need help with the syntax. Below is an example of what I have.
scp -i /.ssh/authorized_keys.pub usernameremotehost:/public/backups/*.t.gz /public/backups/
I have a cron job to schedule the task on the third sunday of the month.I saw the previous threads but didn't find any solution.
How the cron syntax can be written.
I have two shell scripts, one has to run after the other has finished running.I know that in cron.monthly they run in alphabetical order, but does each one run after the other has completed, or is it possible that the first may still be processing when the second is run?
