Since doing an upgrade from Koala to Lynx, my volume control (up in the top right corner of the screen) has vanished. I can still mute and control volume by going into the Sound menu in Preferences, but I really miss having it on the taskbar.

View 9 Replies View RelatedLaptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.
Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'
I boot up my machine today and the Volume Control, which I use a lot, is missing from my panel!Anybody know how I get that back? I figured I could just right-click the panel and choose it from "Add to Panel".. but there is no Volume Control in there?

I accidentally deleted my volume control from my top panel and it's not an option when I go on to 'add to panel' How do I get it back? The sound is half way down and the only control I have is on my crappy speakers so when I turn them up more to compensate, I get the buzzy noise they have?

Also I use uTorrent in win and the utorrent logo use to go into the panel, but now it loads in a separate window label wine system tray. I have searched around and have not found a fix for this.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI did the latest patch/update to lucid this morning and it would appear that my Volume control has gone missing from the task bar. There doesn't seem to be a volume control in Applications > Sounds & Video either. I am sure this has to do with the patch upgrade that I installed as everything was working fine before. For that matter, I had no system sounds either and it took a power off reboot for that to come back. My Music program (atunes) is not working properly either and keeps locking up. How do I reverse this patch or get my system back to a functional state?

View 9 Replies View RelatedAlright, at first, the volume control went missing from the indicator applet, but then re-adding it to the panel didn't do anything but add a mail/chat applet. So I tried to reset the indicator applet settings with this code...
And now all that happens when I add the indicator applet to the panel is that the text: "No indicators" pops up where the mail/chat applet was before. Is there a way to get the volume applet back into the panel?
I've just removed PulseAudio and installed Envy24Control in order to make sound working with my M-Audio Delta 1010LT, it's working fine now, but the only problem is that the master volume control disappeared, and the buttons on my keyboard (volume + and volume -) are not working (with PulseAudio they were fine). I have tried looking for options in the Appearance and Windows options in Menu-system-preferences but cant find anything, that could be used to enable or disable this feature. i recently did a clean install of 10.10 to an old box i had so i could mess around with it and learn. however, all audio (and videos too) would stutter and play very quickly (a 1 minute videos video would play in about 45 seconds). so i followed the solution found here: [url]
this fixed the playback problems perfectly, however, i lost the volume control applet in the upper-right of the screen. reinstalling to volume control and then adding the "indicator applet" back to the panel adds a non-functional volume control icon and an additional mail icon.
The Volume control and network manager icons are not visible in the notification area..
I sure its has nothing to do with
Add to panel-->Notification area....beacuse the notification area is already there..
but the icons are not visible
the only way that I can make the visible is by typing code...
for volume control.. Only then they become visible in the notification area

After upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04, I realised, to my dismay, that the volume control had vanished from the panel. I can still control the volume via the buttons on my keyboard When I right-click on the panel and go to "and to panel" as other treads suggested, "Volume Control" is not on the list
View 8 Replies View RelatedI bought a Toshiba Nb205 laptop with a Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) inside. After I first got it I installed Ubuntu onto it, and that's where the problems started. After everything was installed I noticed that my sound doesn't work. So I looked everywhere. I tried so many solutions offered on these forums including messing around with Alsamixer and nothing seemed to be working. Then one day I luckily stumbled upon this website that directed me here: [URL] So I went there and picked the Linux 2.6(X86)(DEB) from the drop down list and installed it. I rebooted my machine, and I now had sound.
However, the only problem is that I can't control the volume of the sound. When I play something, it stays at one volume and one volume only. Nothing on sound preferences will work. The only way I can raise or lower the volume is if I do it in the application that I run, like if I am playing a ..... video, I have to use their volume control to control the volume. My master volume won't work at all.

Basically, trying to change the volume with the sliders (either with the gnome applet or the volume control gui) sometimes causes the volume to go way down when you are trying to raise the volume (both with scroll-wheel and dragging the sliders). The left-right bars also get unlocked sporadically. It is most prevalent when actually playing something like a move (eg. with Xine) and trying to change the volume with the volume manager or applet. It's especially noticeable if you are trying to change the volume quickly. I'm not sure much can be done about it, as it appears to be an upstream bug but I'm just curious if anyone else has seen this. I've just added my 2 cents on the RedHat Bugzilla site.

My microphone wasn't working so I entered alsamixer to amp up it's volume and see what's wrong.Not sure what I did wrong but now the gnome volume control applet in the Indicator does not affect system volume at all.I can even mute it and it will not mute anything.The volume controls in alsamixer work fine and changing the volume in alsamixer affect system volume immediately.What could I have done? How can I get back volume control inside gnome?

While in Debian, i could control the volume of laptop speakers and headphone in separate channels. So, i could, for example, play a music in laptop speakers and in headphone, at same time.
In April, I've migrate to Kubuntu 10.04. I cannot do it any longer! There are no two separate channels in KMix. Everytime I plug headphone, it redirect the audio output from speakers to heaphone, and when i take the headphone out, it puts taudio output back to speakers. How can I control volume of each channel manually in Kubuntu 10.04?
Volume up, volume down and mute keys on the keyboard don't control the volume any longer.They worked before. Hitting the keys brings up a progress bar widget with the volume level unchangeable, set at 0% (which is not accurate at all).It looks like the key mappings or key bindings are working, but there is a disconnect with actual functionality. The volume cannot be changed or muted anymore from the keyboard.
This worked just fine in KDE on Fedora 11 before upgrading KDE components yesterday with Yumex. I am now using KDE 4.3.2 I don't think that it's a coincidence that it stopped working after doing an update.
I updated the kernel and nVidia drivers too, but this problem exists when I went back and tested with the previous kernel, so I don't suspect the kernel upgrade. No info in Xorg.conf about the keyboard. Is there a setting that I am missing?
Sound works just fine. I can listen to whatever source I like. This is not a problem with the sound drivers as far as I can tell.I just want to be able to control the volume with the keys on my Logitech Illuminated Keyboard, model Y-UY95. My internal mic on sony vaio was not working on karmic 64bit. After I followed these instructions [URL] (updated alsa to 1.0.22) I got the microphone working, but now mplayer does not play any sound (although it plays files), as it tries to use pulse by default. However when run with -ao alsa, it works fine.
Other than that, the volume control has not effect on the sound, so every time I need to control it using alsamix.
When I remove pulseaudio, everything seems to be working, except gnome-volume-control and gnome-volume-control-applet do not start, and the keyboard volume controls dont work.

I get an error saying "Waiting for sound system to respond" And if I run 'pavucontrol' in the terminal, I get "Connection failed: Connection refused"
Also recently I've noticed that when I run some commands in the terminal I often get this message "Home directory /root not ours." Can this be related to the sound problem? I am on the system as root.

View 14 Replies View RelatedWhen I started using Slackware I've been using USB headset. Everything ran perfectly fine. They got recognized, I could use all of it's functions and so on. Unfortunately volume control on them stopped working so I had to service them, and like in every third world country, yay I need to wait minimum three weeks just so they can press a button and say "Yup, they don't work".
I bought normal headset to use them while other one is getting fixed, and didn't expect any problems with them considering they are "old" technology, normal audio input and output.
Now problem is following, sound works fine but microphone doesn't. Once I managed to "fix" it by switching audio input from mic to something else and then back to mic, now even that doesn't work. Another... "problem" is if I leave my USB webcam plugged in while booting computer, there is no sound at all, ether on line ones or USB ones but I can easily solve that problem by unplugging webcam, rebooting and plugging it back in later.
Now everything ran fine until my computer shutdown while I was sleeping. Don't know why, but it started happening recently, don't see anything smart in logs so I assume its... something, read it could be cache, HDD, temperature and so on but since logs don't write down anything smart... will deal with it some other time.
When I talk I can actually hear myself on the headset, which probably means that they work. If I put mic boost all the way up, I can hear myself perfectly clear, but somehow... seems that that information just doesn't get to Slackware, well it gets somewhat considering that it reacts to me adjusting mic boost on KMix, but everything else... no.
Arecord doesn't record anything, TS register as microphone isn't plugged in at all, skype doesn't get any input ether.
