I was wondering if it's possible to show an the AWN dockbar the external devices (such as USB key or external hard disk)connected to the computer. I know that on Docky is possible using an apposite applet
View 6 RepliesJaunty is fully updated but SUDDENLY is not recognizing external devices (card reader, camera, DVD inserted in drawer, etc.) In other words, I cannot see my media and, therefore, cannot open it.
Anybody else having problems here? What's up? Did something go wrong in the updates?

Running various applications, including Open Office, I need to open files from my external hard drive, from within said application itself. But the file menus for all my applications list only the files of my primary hard drive, and I can't look at other drives. Surely there must be some way to do this.

I've never owned an external SATA device, so I'm curious whether these devices are hotpluggable in Fedora. Some computer cases and case inserts have an external SATA connector that plugs into the motherbords built-in SATA connectors and extends the connection so it reaches outside the case. But can you plug and unplug SATA devices just as you do USB devices?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm trying Talika on a Xfce. I really like it, but cannot manage to configure it by right click. Might be because I'm running it trough Xfapplet? Anyway is there any way to configure it, any text file...I searched it on ~/.configure but nothing there. As well on internet I couldn't find any solution. I know Xfce has an own iconozed dockbar applet, but I guess Talika is more configurable. Or there is any tweak for the inner dockbar applet on Xfce?

How can i find through terminal that which devices are external and which are internal.
By external i mean devices attached to USB port. For Example, USB Drive, Portable USB HardDrive etc
By internal i mean devices attached internally. For Example, SATA Harddisk etc.
i have the following challenge: i have a Bluetooth GPS device that i have connected to my linux notebook. but now i also want to use the same device (or better, GPS data stream) for my Navigation device (HP Ipaq with TomTom). make an serial port bluetooth service (sending) that my Navigation device can connect to. copy the incoming bluetooth serial port data stream to the outgoing bluetooth serial port.
i have already installed GPSD so i have the TCP port where the GPS data is available for everything on my notebook. but now i also want it to send it out through bluetooth.
1. is there someone out there who already did this?

yesterday i upgraded my Maverick Meekat 10.10 to 11.04. When i was exploring new features of Natty Narwhal i by mistake disabled Unity in CCSM. And then the Unity dockbar and top Panel disappeared and i am not getting any menu or options. Alt + F2 isn't working so i can't run CCSM to enable Unity again. However i am able to log in as Ubuntu Classic with old menus and functions. how to bring Run command? so that i can run CCSM and bring back my Unity dockbar and top Panel?

USB storage devices are painfully slow, if the data to be copied is above 4GB it works on transferring for more than half an hour and then comes up with an error dialog(saying something like file size is too big). The problem exists in both read and write.

i have an isolated LAN (no connection to outside) with 3 fedora boxes. Suppose one of the boxes has an IP device connected to the serial port. We use SLIP and slattach to configure it and we can ping the device from every fedora boxes. Is it possible to bring the external device (192.168.1.9) to the set of LAN devices that receive LAN broadcasts?
box 1: 192.168.1.1
box 2: 192.168.1.2
box 3: 192.168.1.3.
It runs slattach and uses 192.168.1.9 to address serial connected ip device. I set up this scenario and the external device is ping(ed) with success but if I build a socket udp program that sends a broadcast to the LAN all the fedora boxes receive it except the external serial device. Why.
Why is it that FC6 installs just fine from a USB CDROM in an external enclosure but FC12 boots from the CD asks to install or upgrade an existing system but then stops at no devices found and wants the install path for the install image? It appears to see the CDROM, boots then looses its mind and forgets a CDROM was attached.

Is it possible to show only mounted external volumes on the desktop. I try the method of uncheck /app/nautilus/desktop/volumes_visible. But it hides both internal and external disk.

So my Microsoft Lifecam NX-3000 used to work with 9.04, but I can't seem to get anything from it now (Xubuntu 9.10). It still shows up fine when i enter lsusb, but it won't show up as a video device anywhere else. I have faith that this bug is a simple fix for someone who knows what they're doing, but unfortunately I don't. If it's relevant this is on my aging Toshiba Satellite.

I do not want to buy an external hard disk and then keep moving it between both. Now, strange as it may sound, is it possible to somehow connect my server to the PC and expose a given local hard disk connected to the server, as an external USB drive to the TV?

Managed to install codecs, flash player, media players, chrome and opera browsers and all other things I need. My only problem is that as of about a week ago my external DVD player is not recognized any more by CentOS so I am unable to watch movies. My external DVD player is Magnavox and it works great but CentOS does not recognize it any more. I used to watch movies in CentOS in SMPlayer all the time. What to do to get it back?

View 10 Replies View Relateda friend of mine just given me an old 2004 IBM NetVista 8305 desktop and suggested to use Linux Ubuntu which is something new to me. So i installed it via USB memory stick & it works. After installation of the OS I am impressed with functionality & speed. when i conect the external hard drive via usb it doesn't show & i tried my usb flash disc it showed the same problem. I tried both disk in my laptop (Windows XP) & it works.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI had this corrupted external hdd and so I formatted the main partition on it on windows but messed up in the formatting and ended up having to format the entire thing. I got some weird message about it not being initialized (no not mounted) so I was in compmgmt.msc in windows and right clicked it in device manager and it asked for master boot or GUID I selected the latter and formatted. Worked fine and all for a bit but now it doesn't show up as a drive. I noticed when using compmgmt.msc it showed up that it had installed driver software and was being recognized but in the partition editing area there was nothing on this drive, reinstalling driver software doesn't seem to help. Also GParted wont load up when I have it plugged in and Disk Utility doesn't show it. I am requesting help to fix this problem within Ubuntu 10.10 somehow so I can use it properly.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI need to re-format an external drive. All the instructions I have found start with figuring out where the drive is mounted (sda, hda, etc.). However, as soon as my RH Linux machine sees the drive's format (ntfs) it decides it won't even mount it in the first place. Gives me an error message. Also, the drive doesn't show up at all via "df -k". how to convince RHL to be a little more accepting?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a server and noticed that the to RAID5 setup is showing 4 Raid devices but only 3 Total devices. It's on a fully updated CentOS 5 system that only has three SATA drives, as it can not hold anymore. I've done some researching but am unable to remove the fourth device, which is listed as removed. The full output of `mdadm -D /dev/md2` can be see below. I've never run into this situation before.Anyone have any pointers on how I can reduced the Raid Devices from 4 to 3? I have tried
mdadm /dev/md2 -r failed
mdadm /dev/md2 -r detached
but neither work and since there is no block device listed I'm not quite sure how to get things back in sync so it's only seeing the three drives.

Anyway since I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 when I right-click on something and there is another menu in that menu, it doesn't show up for the first time!
for example if I want to create a an "Empty File", I'll right-click on desktop and when I want to go to "Create Document" menu, it doesn't show up! so I must click somewhere else and try again so for the second time it works!!
I configured it to use IMAP to access our exchange 2010 server front end on a LAN connection. Our webmail connection is segregated behind Forefront, so it was not connecting/authing that way. Even though smartphones have no problem. (sidenote, is there an activesync linux mail client ?)
I have many root folders and several folders underneath my inbox. total mailsize in inbox is 3.5 GB without subfolders. The sent is likewise as large. And is likewise empty.

I work at a local computer shop as a computer technician and we get many computer in daily that require external virus scans (having to take out the hard drives, sticking it in another machine) just to scan (if we're lucky we can sometimes just do it in safe mode).Now what I want to know is...
1. Is it possible to install Ubuntu to an external HDD and use it virtually anywhere I plug it in? Will it pick up the network card, graphics card, etc so I can just plug and go? (Of course there are drivers for some computers).
2. Is it possible to run a Windows oriented virus scanner on Ubuntu? I know I can use WINE to run Windows applications, but will it prove to be compliant with virus scanners as well?
3. The main reason why I want it to be able to pick up on hardware and just work is because I plan on using it for schooling / travelling as well, have all my documents etc saved on it for easy access.
I've used Ubuntu in the past on an old laptop that didn't have much memory, small HDD, and a crap processor but that was 5-6 years ago (I still have the disk they sent me for free ).
I installed Ubuntu on external USB hard drive and while booting I did got option to log into windows XP, Ubuntu. Both operating systems ran fine. i.e. GRUB had overwritten MBR and I was able to dual boot. Main issue: I have installed Ubuntu in external hard-drive so that I can use Linux whenever I want other people who are using same computer can operate on WindowsXP. Sometimes my external hard drive gives problem if there is loose connection and so that oper people using computer do not face any problem I want to disconnect external USB HD whenever I am not using Linux. GRUB menu was pointing to external hardrive so disconnecting it meant my system wont boot!!I rewrote MBR using WindowsXP CD recovery mode. Now I am unable to boot from external USB hard disk( I thought I would be able to if I choose USB hard drive in BIOS option but it did not work it logged into WindowsXP by default).Is there any way I can change WindowsXP boot.ini file so that it also shows Ubuntu in external hard disk? Or is there any way.(I do not want GRUB way as then I would have to keep my external drive connected to log into windows - which I do not want).
