Hardware :: External USB Does Not Show Up In Fdisk -l

I know there are entries in FAQ and sticky topics about USB-drives, but I can't really make a use of any of them... I bought a new 1.5TB internal HDD and put it into an external HDD box connected to my PC via USB. The Problem is:
I plug it in, dmesg tells me:

I have a server with RHEL 5. I have bought a HDD and put it into a USB box. Then I plug it to my server by USB cable. I want to mount it but the fdisk -l command don't show external usb device.

I created a new disk on our scsi san. I then ran the following command: echo "- - -" > /sys/class/scsi_host/host1/scan. did that command for each host. and in dmesg, it shows it found a device /dev/sdg. but when i do a fdisk -l. It never lists /dev/sdg. I just did this other day on another server and it worked fine like that. This is RH 4.8.

Is it possible to show only mounted external volumes on the desktop. I try the method of uncheck /app/nautilus/desktop/volumes_visible. But it hides both internal and external disk.

I have been trying to get my 1tb External USB Hard Drive; WD External HD1021; but although I can see it in "Disk Utility" it does not appear on my Desktop as it used to and as it holds many family photographs and almost all of my music collection, some 150gb I am a little concerned. I am using Ubuntu Meerkat on my Toshiba Laptop.

Installed CentOS 5.5 some time ago and I can proudly say I am more than satisfied with it. Managed to install codecs, flash player, media players, chrome and opera browsers and all other things I need. My only problem is that as of about a week ago my external DVD player is not recognized any more by CentOS so I am unable to watch movies. My external DVD player is Magnavox and it works great but CentOS does not recognize it any more. I used to watch movies in CentOS in SMPlayer all the time. What to do to get it back?

So my Microsoft Lifecam NX-3000 used to work with 9.04, but I can't seem to get anything from it now (Xubuntu 9.10). It still shows up fine when i enter lsusb, but it won't show up as a video device anywhere else. I have faith that this bug is a simple fix for someone who knows what they're doing, but unfortunately I don't. If it's relevant this is on my aging Toshiba Satellite.

I have this unique situation, I think. My TV plays certain files only through external USB storage. My Ubuntu server stores all of these files on local hard disks. I do not want to buy an external hard disk and then keep moving it between both. Now, strange as it may sound, is it possible to somehow connect my server to the PC and expose a given local hard disk connected to the server, as an external USB drive to the TV?

a friend of mine just given me an old 2004 IBM NetVista 8305 desktop and suggested to use Linux Ubuntu which is something new to me. So i installed it via USB memory stick & it works. After installation of the OS I am impressed with functionality & speed. when i conect the external hard drive via usb it doesn't show & i tried my usb flash disc it showed the same problem. I tried both disk in my laptop (Windows XP) & it works.

I had this corrupted external hdd and so I formatted the main partition on it on windows but messed up in the formatting and ended up having to format the entire thing. I got some weird message about it not being initialized (no not mounted) so I was in compmgmt.msc in windows and right clicked it in device manager and it asked for master boot or GUID I selected the latter and formatted. Worked fine and all for a bit but now it doesn't show up as a drive. I noticed when using compmgmt.msc it showed up that it had installed driver software and was being recognized but in the partition editing area there was nothing on this drive, reinstalling driver software doesn't seem to help. Also GParted wont load up when I have it plugged in and Disk Utility doesn't show it. I am requesting help to fix this problem within Ubuntu 10.10 somehow so I can use it properly.

I need to re-format an external drive. All the instructions I have found start with figuring out where the drive is mounted (sda, hda, etc.). However, as soon as my RH Linux machine sees the drive's format (ntfs) it decides it won't even mount it in the first place. Gives me an error message. Also, the drive doesn't show up at all via "df -k". how to convince RHL to be a little more accepting?

I configured it to use IMAP to access our exchange 2010 server front end on a LAN connection. Our webmail connection is segregated behind Forefront, so it was not connecting/authing that way. Even though smartphones have no problem. (sidenote, is there an activesync linux mail client ?)
I have many root folders and several folders underneath my inbox. total mailsize in inbox is 3.5 GB without subfolders. The sent is likewise as large. And is likewise empty.

But thunderbird is missing calender
Tried adding lightening, but it won't add into thunderbird.
Will try finding a diff add on, or if anyone knows how to get lightening into thunderbird 3.1.8 on ubuntu 10 that would be great as well.

I have used fdisk command in windows environment.Just insert a bootable cd having fdisk into cdroom and start hard disk partitioning. I have been working in red hat/fedora Linux since many months.I always use gui interface to do my hard disk partition. Well i am eager to learn Fdisk under Linux. How can I use it ,Its method to create a a fdisk cd or it is in the 1st cd of the operating system ?

Anyway since I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 when I right-click on something and there is another menu in that menu, it doesn't show up for the first time!
for example if I want to create a an "Empty File", I'll right-click on desktop and when I want to go to "Create Document" menu, it doesn't show up! so I must click somewhere else and try again so for the second time it works!!

Is there any way to use 'fdisk -l' as a normal user? I see in F12, /sbin has been added to PATH by default for a normal user, but when trying to use it, nothing shows up.

Since installing 10.4 I've been having startup problems: I get a message requiring me to press S to mount various disks. Something which I've never really understood is: what is the relation between fdisk and fstab?At present fdisk gives sda1 and sda2 as my Linux partitions, sdb1 and sdb2 as my Windows partitions. fstab has:
/dev/sda1 /media/winboot ntfs
/dev/sda2 /media/windata ntfs
/dev/sdb1 /media/sdb1 ext3
/dev/sdb2 /media/sdb2 ntfs
/dev/sdb5 /media/sdb5 swap
which looks a bit sus to me. Am I supposed to make my fstab match fdisk, or does fstab modify the result of fdisk when it boots, or what?

It looks like I have one hard drive (30 GB) with three partitions, but df says my primary partition is under 9 GB? Shouldn't it be much larger?

i have one harddisk /dev/sda it is partitioned as below:
/dev/sda1: /
/dev/sda2: swap
after the centos is installed, i want to create another partition /dev/sda3 to use all remaining disk space. i used fdisk. after fdisk, it requires reboot. The partition table has been altered! Calling ioctl() to re-read partition table.
WARNING: Re-reading the partition table failed with error 16: Device or resource busy.The kernel still uses the old table. The new table will be used at the next reboot. Syncing disks.is reboot really necessary? is there any other tools which do not need to reboot?

I recently expanded the RAID on an iSCSI device which is shared out to a linux server. Fdisk correctly sees the new size but it won't let me add a third partition. It complains about overlapping partitions whenever I try to add it.If I 'remove' the partition, the overlapping error goes away. The interesting thing here is that when attempting to use the default sizes to setup the partition the printed screen shows completely different results (which I can understand is why its complaining about overlapping)
I'm not sure why its not accepting the cylinder sizes I want. Anyone have any ideas as to what's wrong here?

I have a Windows Vista machine on which I selected "utilize free space on selected drives" to install Fedora 9 temporarily. Now, however, I'd like to remove the Fedora installation. I've tried using fdisk from the Fedora 9 rescue mode on the install DVD, but I seemed to merely mess up the cylinder boundaries. When I boot from the DVD, before entering rescue mode it says that /dev/sda contains a looped partition, and asks whether I want to reformat it (completely removing everything on the drive).
How do I remove the "looped" Linux partitions? (I cannot login to Windows, so any GUI applications won't be any help.)

Iīm pretty new to linux and debian and I have a problem with my disk setup. I have a rocketRAID hardware card installed for RAID setup. In addition I have a separate HDD for linux and use the RAID-setup for server purposes. Now, when I boot the system, grub boots /dev/sda1. This does not work and I have to change to /dev/sdb1 for it to find the system files. (although sometimes it works, but in these cases the system does not find the RAID-disks. Thatīs for another time thou).
The strange thing about this, to me in any case, is that "fdisk" reports correctly, with sda and sdb but "df" reports all disks as sda and none as sdb. It also misses a partition of the RAID-disks which fdisk reports. hereīs a screengrab from "fdisk -l" and "df -h"
