Jaunty is fully updated but SUDDENLY is not recognizing external devices (card reader, camera, DVD inserted in drawer, etc.) In other words, I cannot see my media and, therefore, cannot open it.
Anybody else having problems here? What's up? Did something go wrong in the updates?

I'm running Lubuntu 10.04 on a Thinkpad T41. I had been running for a week before realizing that my USB devices (card reader and thumb drive) were not being recognized. I thought that the issue might be related to my aging Thinkpad but I installed the hard driveat is running Slackware and I had no issues with USB devices. I reinserted the hard drive with Lubuntu and was unable to recognize any USB devices.Has anyone else noticed this issue? If so, is there a fix for this issue?
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter the usual mild annoyances inseparable from a Fedora release (installation from the LiveCD worked OK, but generated a requirement for 162MB of day-one updates, followed by something like 150MB of downloads to install OpenOffice - which comes as standard with Ubuntu/Mint/Mandriva and, no doubt, many other distros) I have been able to get the system working reasonably well. If there are major performance gains from the use of ext4, I have been unable to detect them. However, the only really frustrating issue from my perspective has been the difficulty in getting my two printers (both of which worked straight out of the box in the other distros mentioned above) to actually print. The devices in question are a Brother 2140 laser printer and an HP 2280 multi-function inkjet.
Both of these devices were properly recognised by the system, but neither would actually print (there were some initial signs that action was imminent, but no result - the printing processes were finally shown as having been stopped). I removed both printers, and started from scratch. The laser printer could not be persuaded to work, either with the recommended 2170 driver or the old faithful 2060-gutenprint driver. However, when I tried to add the HP, the printer utility advised that I needed to install "hpijs" before proceeding. This I duly did, and the HP 2280 then worked fine. On the basis that my only aim was to get the printers working, I decided to ignore the recommended drivers for the Brother 2140, and select the "2060-hpijs" version. This worked fine, and others may like to try this workaround.
After setting the "nomodeset" kernel parameter, to install the nVidia proprietary driver in OpenSuSE 11.3 (I need to do CUDA development), my Sansa Clip+ is no longer recognized. When I turn the "nomodeset" option off, I can see it with $(fdisk -l).

When running lspci the usb is listed as unknown device. When loading 2.6.26-2-bigmem kernel in the same computer the usb devices work fine.

This is great but I would like to change the mount point to just "/media/ipod/" as it easier to use with gnupod (command driven ipod access oh yes!!) I've had a look around and I know how to mount devices but I'm at a lose as to how things in fedora are automatically mounted... I use gnome so from what I've read hal, dbus, and udev yeah? but I'm not sure what configuration files need to be changed. At the moment I'm just wanting to change the ipods mount point but I would like know more so any technical how-to or articles, or things to look at (I'm thinking X), to understand auto mounting would be nice too.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI bough a 640 GB external USB disk.I found something wasn't working well when I couldn't restore a backup from the disk (with sbackup).So I tried to convert the filesystem from fat32 to something newer.I installed gparted, and it shows no partitions on the 640 drive (however, I can access the filesystem!!!). Also, for some reason it shows as a 298.08 GiB drive.So I thought I should format it to solve this. When I tried to do this, gparted simply closed, with no error messages.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have gone through Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora, and continue using them on different PCs but I recently had a problem with my graphics card on new releases.. another story all together.So I am using OpenSUSE 11.3 on my Dell inspiron 1526 AMD 64 bit. I have always been able to plug in my external HD and have it show on my desktop. Now with OpenSUSE something is different. I tried other flash drives, all show up and open to view on their own, but my 1GB ext HD doesn't. I am not a pro with the Terminal yet but I prefer to use it and am good at reading and copying commands from online.

as you can see it says "My Book" which is the name of my ext TB but where is it and how do I mount it?
I've never owned an external SATA device, so I'm curious whether these devices are hotpluggable in Fedora. Some computer cases and case inserts have an external SATA connector that plugs into the motherbords built-in SATA connectors and extends the connection so it reaches outside the case. But can you plug and unplug SATA devices just as you do USB devices?

How can i find through terminal that which devices are external and which are internal.
By external i mean devices attached to USB port. For Example, USB Drive, Portable USB HardDrive etc
By internal i mean devices attached internally. For Example, SATA Harddisk etc.
i have the following challenge: i have a Bluetooth GPS device that i have connected to my linux notebook. but now i also want to use the same device (or better, GPS data stream) for my Navigation device (HP Ipaq with TomTom). make an serial port bluetooth service (sending) that my Navigation device can connect to. copy the incoming bluetooth serial port data stream to the outgoing bluetooth serial port.
i have already installed GPSD so i have the TCP port where the GPS data is available for everything on my notebook. but now i also want it to send it out through bluetooth.

I'm very new to Ubuntu. Now that I have it installed, my computer doesn't recognize my external hard drive or flash drive. How do I access my external hard drive and flash drive? I'm also trying to get Rosetta Stone to work using Wine, but having a heck of a time. I've searched the forums and have found some similar topics, but nothing that really helped me.
View 6 Replies View RelatedRecently (in 2015) our Debian systems started not to recognize HDDs connected via an external docking station.
On my computer I run: (uname -a)
* Linux violin 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt9-3~deb8u1 (2015-04-24) x86_64 GNU/Linux
* If I connect to a flashdrive to the USB2 port, it is recognized as sd* (messages are also written to dmesg/syslog)
* If I connect the USB3 connector of the external docking station with an 1TB WD SATA docked, to this USB2 port (the external docking station has its own power supply, so I do not expect to have a problem with the current, the drive spins up and is spinning), there is nothing in the dmesg/syslog, and no new items under /dev/sd* or lsusb or similar tools.
* If I connect the same external docking station with the same disk via eSATA on a different computer it is recognized. That computer runs the same debian. If I connect through its USB2 port it does not work either.
* I also tried another docking station and USB cable.
I am actually working again on a problem i had already on opensus 11.3 (never resolved), and now also after the upgrade to 11.4 .
I do have an external HDD (Samsung STORY Station) usually connected to the linux server. I also have udev rules setup to automount the device on /media/xxx by label.
I used to have my own rules, now have some more coplete from the internet.
When I now reboot the server, the "sd*" device for story station is not created, and obviously not mounted.
If however I do switch of th estory station after reboot, and turn power on again, the device is configured and properly automounted as by udev rules.
Also during the boot the device is seen as from boot.msg:

I have a Maxtor external storage HDD with firewire (1394) interface.
When I connected it with my computer, which is running an up-to-date Debian squeeze, it was recognized as "/dev/sda1" and replaced the existing partition on the computer.
I am running Lenny. USB storage devices are painfully slow, if the data to be copied is above 4GB it works on transferring for more than half an hour and then comes up with an error dialog(saying something like file size is too big). The problem exists in both read and write.
I did google a bit and here is the output of lsmod | grep hci

i have an isolated LAN (no connection to outside) with 3 fedora boxes. Suppose one of the boxes has an IP device connected to the serial port. We use SLIP and slattach to configure it and we can ping the device from every fedora boxes. Is it possible to bring the external device (192.168.1.9) to the set of LAN devices that receive LAN broadcasts?
box 1: 192.168.1.1
box 2: 192.168.1.2
box 3: 192.168.1.3.
It runs slattach and uses 192.168.1.9 to address serial connected ip device. I set up this scenario and the external device is ping(ed) with success but if I build a socket udp program that sends a broadcast to the LAN all the fedora boxes receive it except the external serial device. Why.
Why is it that FC6 installs just fine from a USB CDROM in an external enclosure but FC12 boots from the CD asks to install or upgrade an existing system but then stops at no devices found and wants the install path for the install image? It appears to see the CDROM, boots then looses its mind and forgets a CDROM was attached.
View 13 Replies View RelatedJust installed 11.3 kde. When running the live cd both wireless and ethernet devices appeared in the network connections manager utility. I even connected to a wireless AP.I just booted up for the first time and none of these devices are available. There is no network manager icon in the system tray, and when the network manager utility is maually opened the only connection type i can select is vpn.I know that opensuse should be able to recognize these devices since they were available and working via the live cd, so can anyone help me restore them?
One extra piece of info, is that I am sharing a home directory with a gnome ubuntu install. there were a few minor issues i dealt with initially, but i didnt need to change this user's UID like I have had to do in the past so that's good. Each time i open a terminal I get two pieces of output assuming from the bash startup saying something like.URL...I highly doubt that these problems are related, but figured I'd post. Also if someone knows the solution to that as well, that would save me a bit of googling.

OpenSUSE 11.2 server, Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P sda for system, 3 ext4 partitions, working fine.sdb promise RAID1 for data, 1 ext4 partition, working fine.sdc is an eSATA docking station for data backup, 1 encrypted ext4 partition -- here lies the problem.
This configuration has been functional for months until I decided to add two more external drives (sdc) to rotate through backups. I had difficulty with encyption on the first new drive and eventually decided to start over. Using the gui Yast Expert Partitioner, I deleted the single partition. That began a real nightmare...
Since deleting the partition, the system detects drives inserted in the docking station, but does not report them (including a different fully functional drive and a brand new unused drive). I have tested all drives on other computers and they function perfectly. I have rebooted the system several times while troubleshooting this issue.
Could not recreate the partition on server (since it does not recognize the drive), so I used Gparted on another computer - it all went without a hitch, formatted ext4. But when I placed the drive in the dock, the drive still was detected but not recognized.

Yast partitioner shows drives: sda, sda1, sda2, sda3, sdb, sdb1 sbc is not listed.

So how did partition deletion cause this issue, and how do I correct the problem? It is possible that my difficulties encrypting the first new drive are related (it's not my first time doing it successfully). It seems the problem is in the Kernel or configuration. I have invested many hours in forums and on google - tried dozens of possible fixes. I'm beginning to suspect system corruption or a bug, however all other system functions are working perfectly.
The external hard drive which contains all my photos and where I backed-up all my important documents is no longer recognized. It is a three month old 500GB Iomage Prestige Desktop Hard Drive.When I plug it in, it is recognised as a USB device, because it shows up when I type lsusb, but dmesg gives this error message.

I popped the disk out of the casing put it on a SATA connect internally and then tried the file recovery programs testdisk/photorec and SpinRite, but both failed because they couldn't recognize the external hard disk.
i have a gateway 2000 that my uncle has, that is a complete p.o.s, and this is how it goes: i turn it on, disk corrupted. "ok, let's reinstall from cd" cd drive sucks, "ok, let's use one from a different computer" cd drive swapped, ready to go.. ram burns out. 3 long beeps at boot, screen not working. "ok, let's get a different stick of ram" replaced ram. new ram stick works. "ok, now let.s see." no beeping. yay. "here we go, let.s reinstall! yeah!!"
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Kubuntu 9.04 Jaunty on my buddy's laptop. It's working alright, except when we try to plug the external computer speakers into the sound jack in the front, there is no change; it keeps playing through the onboard speakers. My friend and I are getting pretty frustrated because we use those speakers to watch movies with, and the onboard speakers aren't sufficient. If I need to provide any other info, let me know and I'll do so.
